2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #2: Early Overreactions
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yikes</b></div><div>Zetterlund looks like a real big piece for the Sharks future. Eklund has tailed off and I think he’s not playing bad but he’s struggling to click the way Zetterlund has so Eklunds development is monumental, and if Duclair helps Eklund move from just being good to clicking better then Zetterlund: that’s incredibly valuable.</div></div>
ZetterGOAT > Meier confirmed ?????
In all honesty, I'm real happy for Zetterlund in that he's settled well into his new environment (much more so than Meier anyways).
Will always be rooting for Zetterlund, regardless of who he plays for. He's a helluva hockey player and I think the Devils are missing him a ton with the way guys like Nosek, Tierney and Bastian have underperformed to the degree that they have.

Goalie trades
Bruins probably consider
Predators decline, with prejudice
Unsure what Vegas thinks of this. My feeling is that they'd value the flexibility of Hill's contract over RNH's remaining 6 years, but on the other hand they have Thompson who I consider a perfectly decent starter, and C is an overall more valuable position than G.
Blues take that and run. Highway robbery.
That's a lot to give up for Allen, Hughes would be ecstatic to get a 1st back for Allen.
Tampa won't touch this with a ten-foot pole
Flyers decline
Ducks probably declines outright (but they really shouldn't)
I'd want the Devils to consider moving Schmid for a 1st, in a vacuum at least. But the timing isn't great to be trading a goalie right now as Schmid is probably the best one the Devils have in the organization and they have just entered their window of contention. It's a fair offer for Schmid but I don't see the fit here.

Devils shouldn't go anywhere near that Hanifin trade, Bahl is not available.
Maybe if Bahl was removed from the deal entirely but then I'd rather not have the Devils toss 1st rd picks for rentals at this point in time. Would prefer having Fitzgerald look at cheaper options if he is going down the rental defenseman route.

It never hurts to ask
I'm not convinced Hedman is THAT GUY any longer. Looks to me like he's declined a fair bit the last season and a half. I wonder if the ask / counter wouldn't be fairly astronomical should Tampa entertain the thought of trading him, and realistically there should be a handful of teams willing to beat your suggested return for Hedman if it came to that.
I'd steer clear if it were up to me but it is an interesting thought nonetheless.

Hanifin
I wouldn't touch that Hanifin extension with a ten-foot pole. That's just asking for trouble.
Not too against the idea of bringing Hanifin in purely as a rental piece (but even then I'd rather keep the 1st!).
Also, I wouldn't worry about the strength of the Devils D corps for next season.
Luke and Bahl will have developed even further and Nemec should most definitely be a significant upgrade over Smith / Miller.
And with Vilén and Hatakka coming along very nicely I see no need whatsoever to bring in a defenseman from outside the organization onto the roster.

While McLeod isn't playing too bad at the moment I squirm at the sight of him at 3C.
I really believe that the centers for tonight's game should be Hughes - Mercer - Haula - McLeod (and preferably in that order).
Also, do we know that Foote is getting the nod at 3RHD? Would be an interesting watch if he is making his Devils debut.

I think best chance of prying away from BOS would be Gryz. Can play top 4 mins ea side of the ice, just a little small sometimes during playoff hockey.
Walsh i think you're correct, and Forbort while i think probably better fit for NJD in a playoff run, is more valuable to BOS than on the market.
Because he's a smaller D-Man, i'd probably say a 2nd in 2024 draft or prospect equivalent (I don't know the system well enough to accurately predict one's value)
Since your 2024 is gone, probably be a 2025 2nd and something else smaller like one of those 5ths
50% retained would be a 1st though i'd think</div></div>
Interesting what you’ve said here. Wasn’t aware of the roster moves Bruins moved recently.
I’ll point out that your suggested returns strike me as rather optimistic, I should expect the draft pick to be lowered by one round in each instance you’ve mentioned here.
If the Devils are dangling a 1st I should much rather have them spending it on Hanifin or Tanev ahead of Grzelcyk.

Rental dmen pricequality
I wouldn't go near:
Lyubushkin
Bryson
Johnson
Määttä
Kulikov
Simek
Scandella
Myers
Dillon
Unavailable, most likely:
Jokiharju - Playing very well to start the season and the Sabres are very thin on RHD depth
Durzi - looks like he'll be a coyote for quite some time, Arizona won't be giving him up any time soon
Walsh - think he explicitly asked to be traded into the Bruins organization
Forbort - doing well with the Bruins and they wouldn't be interested in moving solid veterans out at this point in time
Grzelcyk - same as above
Chatfield - Canes wouldn't want to move him to their biggest in-division rival
Petry - Detroit are playing too well to be interested in trading him at this point in time
Gostisbehere - same as above
Addison - Very important for the Wild's cap situation and is playing pretty well so they aren't gonna move him
Roy - Top 4 RHD on a fringe contender, Kings aren't trading him
Cole - Canucks just got him in and is very important for their defensive depth, not getting traded unless closer to TDL
Martinez - love him but Vegas aren't gonna trade him unfortunately
DeMelo - Jets are doubling down on making the playoffs and wouldn't let him go unless they're out of it by TDL (which would be unlikely in my opinion, they're underrated)
Term, RFA rights and / or cap hit is an issue:
Fabbro
Larsson
That leaves:
Hanifin
Tanev
Zadorov
Bean
Boqvist
Kovacevic
Carrier
Schultz
My top picks out of these would be Zadorov, Carrier, Schultz and Tanev. I think each of them would serve a clear role as a rental while also not being prohibitively expensive to acquire.
I do think that each of the 8 guys above would be worthwhile to look into trading for though, but I would also like to see Foote, Hatakka, Vilén and even Nemec get a few looks at the NHL level before anything actually goes down.

the fix
Why are the Devils trading a decent middle six forward (and burning a retention slot?!) for a terribly overpriced goalie that'd be 3rd on the Devils depth chart come the playoffs, and adding a 2nd rd pick to the Flames in the process???
I wouldn't even want the Devils to take Markström for free if offered.

Thought Sammy was the guy
Schmid still has so much upside for the Devils. 3 bad games to start the season does in now way offset his magnificent play from last season.
No point in trading Schmid for a pending UFA in Samsonov, and especially so since Sammy's been playing even worse than Schmid to start the season.

Move over Grover
Poltapov's counting stats in KHL certainly aren't anything to scoff at but Casey has been an absolute marvel since the Devils drafted him in 2022.
In hindsight Casey really should have gone in the 1st rd of that draft, and possible in the 1st half of the 1st rd even. Absolute steal by the Devils to get him as late as they did.
You make a point in that Casey likely wouldn't fit into the Devils RHD corps (as currently constructed) but that doesn't mean that Polatpov constitutes a good fit and appropriate value for the Devils when dealing Casey as they are well set on wingers for their prospect pool.
I think a Casey - Östlund swap would be much more equitable and fit both teams needs as the Devils could make good use of a higher end center prospect in that pool of theirs, they are running quite low in that department.

If The Flames Have to Sell
The Devils should 100% take that, I’m a big fan of Zadorov’s game and think he would be a big asset for this Devils team.
Thinking Zadorov could slot in as 2LHD playing with Marino and let Bahl - Hughes be the 3rd pair.
For the trade to work Calgary would probably have to take one of Smith or Miller back so that Zadorov fits under the cap (unless Flames retain salary).

I would not want the Devils to consider that at this point in time. Lazar's quietly been very decent in the two of the three games he's gotten so far this season.
I feel like trading him now would also be a shytty thing to do to him given that he's been less than a year with the organization and just got his wife and newborn over to Newark.
Maintaining a good organizational rep is arguably more important than siphoning out mid-late rd picks imo.

devils fans how crazy is this
Devils tried Hughes on Hischier's wing at times in his 1st year, results were terribly unimpressive. That's when Jack Hughes looked his worst and the 'bust' moniker genuinely felt true at times during that period.
Besides, the Devils have so many top notch wingers at this point in time that shifting Hughes to the wing achieves nothing whatsoever.
Hughes and Hischier do play together on the powerplay and when the Devils pull the goalie and, while they do look great together in those scenarios at 5v5 fate has deemed that they should be played separately and that's probably for the best.
