Devils should heavily consider that if offered. The retention is probably unnecessary and if it’s all the same to Pittsburgh I’d much rather have Brendan Smith being part of the return, despite his struggles so far Kevin Bahl remains an important piece on this Devils team.

Rest of your comment aside, no I won't tell you that in a smaller sample size that guys like Montembault, DeSmith or Ingram (or Lankinen!) are better goalies than Vasilievsky just cus they so far have better GSAx/60 than Vasi at this point in time.
But I would be a lot more in favour of the Devils trading for any of those three ahead of Gibson, given the way the latter hasn't come close to meeting the expectations of a 6.4m goalie in his prime years over the last 5 years. 20 good games to start the 23/24 season is nowhere near enough to cover for stinking Anaheim's crease up the last 4-5 years.

Seems like you don't fully grasp what the Ducks are getting with the rest of OPs suggested trade.
Filmon is a pretty solid forward prospect but Vilén is the real price for the Ducks in this deal (other than getting out from the rest of Gibson's rather awful contract).
Vilén's an absolute baller, if he keeps his progression up the Devils will have a straight in-house replacement for Marino available to them in a couple of years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>"Very good season so far"?!? His 0.900 save percentage and 3.16 goals-against average are microscopically better than Schmid's figures (0.897 and 3.12). Three goals out of one thousand shots is well within the margin of error.</div></div>
Well yes, but there's this much more refined stat called 'Goals Saved Above Expected' (GSAx, for short).
The neat thing about GSAx is that it can control for the difficulty of the shots the goalie has to deal with.
The way that stat controls for difficulty is that it measures the location of where the shot is taken from, which is kinda valuable to look at given that shots from the blueline aren't equivalently dangerous as shots from the slot (makes sense, right?). Some more advanced variations of GSAx can even control for pre shot puck movement and what kinda of shot has actually taken place (slapper, backhand, screened shots etc).
Anyway, these are controls that regular sv% and GAA cannot do and therefore one should be very careful about what conclusion are drawn from those static data points...
As it happens, among goalies playing more than 10 games so far this season Lankinen ranks 14th in GSAx/60mins (at 5v5), which is pretty good!
Gibson is 17th in 5v5 GSAx/60, for reference.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>I see that you entirely missed the OP's point that Hamilton's absence is likely to lead to decreased performance, not improved.</div></div>
This is fair.
However, OP didn't seem to take into account that the Devils have been playing about one third of the season without Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier.
Any team would struggle to be competitive if they had to play without their top 2 Cs, especially when their number one defender has been taken out of commission within that same time-frame.
Getting Hughes and Hischier back makes it likelier that the Devils will see increased overall performance.

Good thing OP is suggesting the Devils trade for Kevin Lankinen then, he is having a very good season so far and kinda outplaying Saros.

Kraken trade is VERY pricey for #4 RHD the Devils don’t really need.
Ducks trade kinda similar, very rich return for the Ducks when all they give up is a rental 3C piece and a terribly overpriced goalie that’s been underperforming his expectations and cap hit 4 out of the last 5 season by now.
Seriously hoping Devils don’t go anywhere near these trades.

Don't see the point in the Devils throwing a depth prospect and a pick away for Hoffman at this moment in time.
Pens should be all over that but Carter likely blocks that move.
Canes, Leafs and Canucks probably don't consider this either.

Betting on Lindholm at the 2022 TDL is very different from trading for Fowler in the present day however.
Lindholm is (and was) on a different level to Fowler and putting up possession metrics below 50% for 3 quarters of a season doesn't change that, nor does it in anyway speak to throwing all that at Fowler being a good idea whatsoever.
Maybe Fowler gets some of his magic back if traded to contender, for a time, but in the end that 6.5m is gonna be a real anchor on Fitzy's cap sheet for the duration of his deal.
Why bother paying so much for all that risk when Bahl is, in my opinion, the better player between the two at present (and most definitely will be in 12 months from now)??
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>But you're talking about a bottom pair defenseman, a prospect who likely never makes the roster in NJ if he ever makes the show, and a pick that should be in the 20s for a more than serviceable top 4 defenseman on a reasonable contract over the next three years.</div></div>
I'm not sure what you're on about here. Hämeenaho is having a great D+1 year in Liiga and at this point in time I'd be very surprised if he didn't make the Devils lineup on an ELC within the next 2 years. He's a homerun of a 2nd rd draft pick and shouldn't be tossed into some ill-advised trade for Fowler and his contract...
Bahl is actually been playing 2nd pair a lot so far this season and while his level of play isn't as good as it was last year, it doesn't compare to how difficult a time Fowler has been having with the Ducks over the last 1.5 years. At best it's a lateral move in the short-term on player ability alone but factoring age and cap hit in this is a straight up downgrade for the Devils and their blueline.
Why should the Devils tack a 1st on to all that and forego the opportunity to restock a diminishing pool of prospects when superior players like Hanifin or Tanev could be had for less? (or why even trade for a defenceman in the first place)
It makes no sense whatsoever to pursue Fowler and certainly not for this ridiculous amount of value...

Fowler is still the better defender, and unlike Bahl, he's not an absolute black hole on offense. He's an all situations minute muncher with a remarkable ability to stay healthy as a defenseman.
He's one of our strongest performers year in and year out in playing the toughest minutes, and for the last couple of years, having to cover for rookie defensive partners making mistakes.
So who's ass are you pulling your opinion out of?</div></div>
A defenceman befitting of commanding OP's suggested return should be capable of not getting outshot, outchanced and outscored to the degree that Fowler is and has been over the last year and a half regardless of who he's paired with.
I'm sorry that all your favorite players aren't what they used to and aren't nearly as good as you seem to think they are but if you think that OP's suggested return wouldn't amount to the biggest fleecing of the calendar year then you're the one who needs to check what ass you might be pulling your opinions from, sir.

That's a crazy return for Fowler and especially so at this point in time.
From what I can tell he's been one of the weaker performing Ducks players so far, coupled with him being awful last season and at the wrong side of 30 this idea looks nothing short of a disaster to me.
It'd be almost as bad as trading for John Gibson lol.
Bahl is most likely the outright better defender than Fowler at this point in time.

In all honesty, I'm real happy for Zetterlund in that he's settled well into his new environment (much more so than Meier anyways).
Will always be rooting for Zetterlund, regardless of who he plays for. He's a helluva hockey player and I think the Devils are missing him a ton with the way guys like Nosek, Tierney and Bastian have underperformed to the degree that they have.

Unsure what Vegas thinks of this. My feeling is that they'd value the flexibility of Hill's contract over RNH's remaining 6 years, but on the other hand they have Thompson who I consider a perfectly decent starter, and C is an overall more valuable position than G.
Blues take that and run. Highway robbery.
That's a lot to give up for Allen, Hughes would be ecstatic to get a 1st back for Allen.
Tampa won't touch this with a ten-foot pole
Flyers decline
Ducks probably declines outright (but they really shouldn't)
I'd want the Devils to consider moving Schmid for a 1st, in a vacuum at least. But the timing isn't great to be trading a goalie right now as Schmid is probably the best one the Devils have in the organization and they have just entered their window of contention. It's a fair offer for Schmid but I don't see the fit here.

Maybe if Bahl was removed from the deal entirely but then I'd rather not have the Devils toss 1st rd picks for rentals at this point in time. Would prefer having Fitzgerald look at cheaper options if he is going down the rental defenseman route.

I'm not convinced Hedman is THAT GUY any longer. Looks to me like he's declined a fair bit the last season and a half. I wonder if the ask / counter wouldn't be fairly astronomical should Tampa entertain the thought of trading him, and realistically there should be a handful of teams willing to beat your suggested return for Hedman if it came to that.
I'd steer clear if it were up to me but it is an interesting thought nonetheless.
