Buchnevich might be a Sabre but it will
That is a brutal price tag unless he has a team friendly extension in place already. Which of course he’s not signing a team friendly extension. It doesn’t really make sense for Buffalo to add a high price tag Contract either, or pay a king’s ransom for a rental.

He’s definitely getting at least one more season in Buffalo, and the buyout is a little more palatable next year. Best case scenario the NHL hands out a couple more compliance buyouts because everyone everyone else has completely fubared their salary cap situation. The great irony is using one on him and resigning him at a price that he’s actually worth while still making the same money technically. I think he doesn’t want to leave and if we did do that he’d actually consider signing back anyway.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>I could see this for the Sabres. McLeod is a burner, I would like the fourth liners to have more grit, but I think there's gotta be a spot for a guy that skates like that. Jokiharju is fine, the biggest problem for him is that he's a soft puck mover on a team with a lot of similar players. I'd say he's a 3rd liner that would pair well with a big defensive partner, and he can play second line in a pinch.</div></div>
McLeod is a better player than Robinson, whose only skill is having the same level of speed. I love this addition, and this is the type of player I would be prepared to give up Jokiharju for.

Your ideas aren’t all bad, but it’s a lot more likely the Sabres make only one of these trades not all three of them. And Buffalo is paying way too much in the Seattle trade for two guys with one year contracts.

He's a very solid 4th liner. Good PKer at a very low cost. You over here going on like he's some burden to the team....</div></div>
$2 million isn’t that low, and my thinking is he’s not actually an upgrade over Girgensons. He has playoff experience which Girgensons doesn’t, but that’s all he has over him. You could say he had a bad year last year, which would be obvious. But I don’t know what he’s got left to give. That and we’ve seen plenty of AGM’s here where he is moved for fifth or sixth round picks, so I’m inclined to believe if you want him, he shouldn’t cost much at all. But I’m also inclined to believe the Sabres aren’t looking for a multi year deal for a fourth line player.

Because it’s absurd to pay a third pairing defender $6+ million a season. It’s stupid to add a player who will demand that kind of money when you already have better guys in front of him.

Chychrun walks in a year. You’re paying a premium for a third pairing defender on this team. Buffalo isn’t looking to a division rival for the pieces they need, the asking price will be as ridiculous as what you’ve paid here.

Just because Buffalo has four top level prospects, doesn’t mean any one of them are worth less than they would be if they were someone else’s best prospect, which they would be. Everyone is in such a hurry to trade at least one of them, realistically, any one of them is worth a mid round first minimum. With that in mind, there are few players that are actually worth two relatively high first round picks, unless they have a team friendly contract extension already in place.

He’s not Connor McDavid, that’s too much for Konecny already. That type of return should be enough to get almost any player who isn’t a franchise player. If you wouldn’t put a C on the guy’s chest, he’s not a franchise player.

2024-25 SABRES V2
I don’t hate your ideas here, but I’m not sure Kulich is ready to be a center at the NHL level. I think Krebs would play over him unless he comes to Camp and really impresses the way Benson did last year. And they won’t waste him as an extra forward when he can be playing top minutes in Rochester. Not sure what Craig Smith has left to give, but I don’t know if he can be worse than the guys they’ve been using on the fourth line the last couple years. And half retained for the year I think Buffalo might consider Atkinson if they can’t get someone they like better.

He's not a top echelon player, but he can play in all situations. So I would say there is some reliability there. I don't watch Buffalo a tonne, but from what I've seen some reliability could be good as they integrate more youth in their lineup. You could argue that Nucks may need to dish out a bit more, but in my opinion not much.</div></div>
They would have to dish out a bit more, particularly if there was not much desire for Suter to sign an extension before the year begins. Being that Vancouver had an exceptionally good record a bit more to me would be a second or third round pick in addition because they’re not very high, or the early negotiation rights to a player like Dakota Joshua, if the Sabres are actually targeting him. Of course we all know Vancouver would like to keep him.

Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canuck4life</b></div><div>Suter had a great season and is a cheap winger/center that can play up and down the lineup. There is definitely value in that. Saying that, my line of thinking is Buffalo is trying to restructure their blueline, he could be an odd man out. You've got Dahlin & Samuelsson on the left side and Power, Byram on the right side, you've also got Clifton there as well. I think this could be a deal that works well for both sides.</div></div>
Suter is a fine player, but Jokiharju has value beyond what he does. Just by virtue of the fact, he is a right handed shot defender who is only 24 and has as much experience as he does he’s worth at least a second round pick to any team across the league. If he’s the odd man out in Buffalo, they should get more than a third line Center with a one year contract walking him to UFA.
It’s a similar argument to which of the top prospects in Buffalo is expendable compared to the others. Most other teams don’t have a prospect better than any of Buffalo’s top four: Kulich, Savoie, Ostlund, Rosen. Just because one of these players may be traded to make the core roster better doesn’t mean he’s less valuable than he would be if any of the others were in another team’s system. There’s a good chance whichever of them is traded if any is the best prospect for his new team. Jokiharju will probably not be the best right handed defenseman on the next team he plays for if he gets traded. But he could be a second pairing defender where he ends up next, and the return value should reflect that. I’m not expecting a gamebreaker in return for him alone, but if he’s part of a package to get one, that’s the type of trade I could see being made.

A 3rd is too high for a $4 million 3rd or 4th liner. If they retain some of the money, then it might be worth it. But the point of trading him is they aren’t retaining anything.

Suter has a one year deal before he walks. Jokiharju is an RFA Right handed defender with years of experience and is only 24. Even if they didn’t want to resign him, he has trade value after the season is over. Suter doesn’t. I would be hesitant even to trade him if Vancouver added to their side of the deal.
