Calgary a No Go
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mv21227</b></div><div>From what I saw the Leafs needed retention and the Flames didn’t want to retain, so they traded him to Vancouver. Also saw the Canucks needed to add a 5th as inter division tax, so I assume Toronto was offering a 3rd as well</div></div>
Yeah that's exactly how I saw it. Leafs definitely needed retention if they wanted to do more, which they definitely do. Zadorov is not enough. For the Flames it made zero sense to retain, they potentially have 3 others were it would make more sense to fulfill the full slots.

Calgary a No Go
Has anyone said that Calgary took less because they don't want to deal with the ex-GM? They would rather the player in the same division (with an extension possible), than deal with another GM? I don't buy that.

I think it's definitely the latter part of what you said. I think that's the perfect value. I guess it's a 1st if there's an extension window or the demand is so high.

I don't think they do that, but I wonder if they admit they might have made a mistake/misjudged the player and do something like this for a Sergachev?

Lol hopefully people can just stop with the Chiarot deal- as if that wasn't trashed right away and nothing comparable to that trade has ever occurred again.

People keep referencing the Chiarot trade as if teams and everyone else didn't recognize right away that was a bad trade. There has not been a trade like that since. Heard Montreal fans and media scream for 2 yrs that Edmondson was getting the same return.

Calgary could separate those two in a couple deals and get way better assets back without helping the Leafs just for the sake of it.</div></div>
It's probably add a 3rd and maybe Timmins? Honestly I don't think it can be much more than that. I don't think you get a 1st for either Tanev or Zadorov in separate deals. Ekholm who's far better than both players and has term cost the Oilers a Bish prospect and a 1st/4th.

New additions are brutal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GreatWhiteNorth</b></div><div>Klingberg has been fine and has done what he was brought in to do which is be the PP guy on the back end and he’s also been more physical so he won’t be going anywhere.
Domi has been as advertised - a streaky player. He’s best when he’s moving his feet and moving north to south but when he tries to get fancy and go east to west he’s been in trouble. He’ll stick around cause he was brought in for his playoff performance not his regular season.
Bertuzzi has been awful IMO. The underlying numbers are good when he’s with Matttews and Marner but his play doesn’t look good on the ice. There’s no energy and he acts like he doesn’t care when he’s in the room and he’s been very arrogant. If there’s a deal for him at the deadline I wouldn’t be shocked if Treliving looked at moving him.</div></div>
Klingberg signing has always been dreadful. If you are going to pay a dman that much money as a competitive, salary cap team, he has to be in your top4. Klingberg can't play top4 mins because he is atrocious defensively. I don't disagree they needed guys that could help against the transition as that was exposed by Florida, but It's poor cap management to spend that much on a guy that should be your 5-6 dman that needs sheltering. Seems like they read the market wrong and should have tried to out wait Dumba who was their first choice.
I agree with Domi being brought in for the playoffs, but I think he's just playing with the wrong players. You make it sound like his game is a grinder game, and it's not that. His game is almost entirely rushed based. He needs to play with certain players to do that.
Bertuzzi again was brought in for the playoffs. I don't know if I buy his game is better then, but it's hard to argue against the track record. So you have to wait for the playoffs. He was dreadful for 20+ games in Boston when he went there last year. He was probably the worst player on the best regular season team ever. And then he was one of maybe 3 players that showed up for the playoffs there.
If the idea is that these guys were brought in for the playoffs, I guess you have to bank on your core guys getting you there and then these additions really coming into play with helping the core guys get through.
Defence they have to do something though. No debate there.

More Snot
Anyone touching that Marchment contract without getting other capital is bad at their job. Anyone doing that and justifying it as, hey we don't expect Nylander back this is good for us is insane. You also still have to play Domi as a C which is less than ideal, your bottom roster will still have issues defending, your defense is quite poor, and some how you are still only able to run a 20man roster. Doing all this while getting worse overall and adding more money long term is really something.

Nylander 10 No Teams
If his agent is a good agent- which he definitely is- then the teams on his no-trade would be the teams that were most likely to trade for him. Also Nylander shouldn't be the cost for EK, and honestly, if you have a management group that thinks having Rielly, Klingberg, and EK on the same team is a good idea, then I'm thinking it's not Nylander and his agent that are being the outrageous ones.
