Don’t think the Sabres are gonna spend assets on rentals
So i think the only way they’d trade for Dumba is if they wanted to extend him-AND- they thought they could extend him

Over Vlasic? yea Vlasic at least looks like an NHL D man this year but he is playing like a 1-1.5 mil depth D and not a 7 mil for 3 more years D

If Larkin gets traded
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TooMalevolent</b></div><div>But would the Red Wings allow him to talk to teams about an extension? Would he want to make that call as soon as he's traded? If he's leaving his home and the place he's played his whole career, and he's so close to UFA, would he not want to go to open market? If such is the case, no team should give up 2 1st Rd picks.</div></div>
If Larkin isn't interested in staying just ask him where he wants to play. An extended Larkin should fetch 2 1sts, a 1st and 2nd at the very least

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>glarson17</b></div><div>Meier $3 mil retained and taking a cap dump back will cost more than that</div></div>
Definetely agree that it would take more but I wouldn't quite go as far as saying an expiring $2.25m contract is a rental.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KiSS_My_Asthma</b></div><div>I don't think acquiring Meier is a great idea for the leafs.
There's basically no chance they could make his QO at 10 million next season. Might be better to go for a straight rental, a Horvat or maybe a Kane/Toews</div></div>
I think the more likely outcome is that he signs a long-term deal at closer to 8m, maybe 9, instead of taking the 1-year deal and walking to UFA (which isn't a huge difference). It would be veeeeery difficult, but I don't think it's impossible - particularly if the cap rises around $4m as is possible

Opportunity
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TooMalevolent</b></div><div>Anyone that thinks Rielly is the Leafs best dman has not watched the Leafs. Brodie-Jenson would be a fine pair to throw down in a shut down role, but dmen as expiring players never get 1st Rd picks as a return. And the 50% retained doesn't mean anything. That's a 4th Rd pick. There's an established market for how much retention costs. Jensen is worth a 2nd, 4th and B prospect.
*Again, besides Florida who regrets the trade.</div></div>
-Hampus Lindholm for 1st/2nd/2nd+
-Ben Chiarot for a 1st/4th+
-Rasmus Ristolainen for a 1st+
-David Savard for a 1st/3rd+
All trades down in the past 2 years where a defenseman in the last year of his contract got traded for *at least* a 1st, sounds like we could talk about what the established market might actually be. Jensen fully retained would be cheaper than all of them (Savard was only cheaper because of double retention) and he's been the Caps best defender this year, by far. Not saying it's a slam dunk that he gets a 1st, but betting that strongly against it with multiple recent examples that the Caps can point to as comps is not a bet I'd want to put money behind.

Leafs from a Bs fan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TooMalevolent</b></div><div>I agree with all of this except the salary retention part. Covering that little salary doesn't cost more than a 5th Rd pick.
But NYI should definitely look for the Manson return. And I don't doubt that 2nd could potentially become a first with conditions of signing/depending how far a team goes. He's good defensively, big, right-handed, and costs essentially nothing on the cap. Should be a bidding war. In a game where the Leafs kind of dominated, Mayfield still looked great. This of course is predicated on the NYI moving him.</div></div>
Yeah, I could see the packaging being 2nd/prospect/mid-rounder for a retained Mayfield being the most realistic place it settles, but I also can see a world where someone really falls in love and just bumps it up to a 1st. The first package is more likely but weirder things have happened than a GM overpaying for a big, physical Dman at the deadline. If I'm the one trading him, I push hard for that but am fine settling for just an additional pick.

-Terrible offer for Mayfield. Kral is a middling prospect at best, and a pair of late-round picks are really not valuable. Mayfield is a solid 19-20 minute a night guy who can play top 4 without killing you and is a luxury as RD3 - the ask for the Isles (if they're even moving them) should be the Josh Manson package: a 2nd and a good prospect. If the acquiring team wants the Isles to retain down to $725K, turn the 2nd into a 1st or the good prospect into a very good prospect, and let's talk. Pass on this, though.
-I can't see the Flyers eating $12M over the next 4 years for just a 2023 1st, much less actually giving you Kevin Hayes and throwing in Deslauriers.
-Can't see the Leafs paying for Nick Ritchie less than a year after they paid to get rid of Nick Ritchie. Timmins is okay, I guess, but I don't know if he's really any more valuable than a guy like Victor Mete, and not really worth giving up assets for if that's the case.

Smith @ $1 million is fine-- but it doesn't improve the roster.
Wood, Talbot, Hill are bad contracts.
Deals $1million and less are irrelevant-- you can bury in the minors with no penalty.

Give Reilly ozone starts.
It's tough to throw someone like Sandin on his off-side. I don't understand why the veteran you got is not doing it instead of the young dman.</div></div>
Gio has played the right side before, he can i dont see why they dont use him there. Things like this gives me some worries about Keef sometimes.

Lou Lamoriello Is Awful
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TooMalevolent</b></div><div>I agree with your overall point that he is far from awful. And he does seem to get younger guys on good deals (not so much for the older guys- and maybe it's good that he was saved from making another move of term for the 30+ guy). But I think it's important to acknowledge the significance of their elite coach when
discussing the playoff appearances/success. The coach he let go.</div></div>
Yep. The last point is 100% valid but also just remember who brought in Trotz too. Could have been another former Isles player with his band of buddies and the team could been stuck in another 4 years of rot. But yeah, I don't know what went on there with Trotz and Im certainly not defending some of Lou's bone headed decisions. He's made a few for sure but like I said earlier, there are IMHO way worse GM's out there.
Lou brought some respectability back to long island when they desperately needed it. It wasn't perfect but it could have been way worse.

Too "old school"? Absolutely. Awful? No not really. Not <em>great</em> maybe but certainly not awful.
Isles have had more playoff success since Lou's arrival than most teams have had in a decade. Multiple decades for some.....
I'm not a fan of his management style either but there are far worse GM's in the NHL than Lou. FAR FAR worse. See Chuck Fletcher for example.
I think he was busy this offseason trying to get things done but wouldn't succumb to the outlandish costs of dumping salary and exorbitant UFA's contracts and things simply didn't pan out.
Even with not much done and just a more normal schedule this year, I think NYI will be back to the playoff picture for sure.

Can give him the top6 time he wants and see how he develops. If he excels, great. Also provides a little protection for Quinn. If it's clear that JP is just a higher-end bottom six guy, Sabers have the cap and timeline to lock him up and strengthen their lineup as their better and younger guys breakthrough. Worst case put a good defensive C in the middle of Asplund and JP and let them get to work.</div></div>
