You won't get that for Karlssons negotiating rights when NJ could just wait a week and get him as UFA.

Went off the premise that Callahan has a NMC and would veto a trade out of TB when they're close to winning a cup even if he's going to WPG who might equally be as close.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dcc94</b></div><div>That's the point...Trouba will bring in a top D prospect and or pick...or both...he will have to....and he should</div></div>
1 year of Trouba will NOT bring in a top RHD prospect. Any team that has one of those, isn't trading it for anything unless they need a #1C prospect. I wanted WPG to trade EDM for their #10 pick this year because I was certain a top pair RHD prospect would be available at that spot this year and low and behold there were a couple. But now that the teams have those prospects, they're not trading them for anything!

3 way deal... does it work? OTT TOR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dirtysaucedonny</b></div><div>Ok so with this in mind, WPG is still fleecing this deal, with TOR giving up way more and getting the weaker player. I just don't see how that happens? Why would TOR not just give up the same pieces and get a year of Karlsson, and then try the same thing you're suggesting they do with Trouba?</div></div>
So depends on what theory you prescribe to. Toronto gets a 24 year old RHD instead of a 28 year old Karlsson whos more likely to decline in an 8 year deal than Trouba. The other factor is with Tavares, Matthews, Marner all making big money deals, adding Karlsson at the rumored 10-12M might not be as feasible as a 6.5-8M Trouba. Also OTT likely WILL NOT trade in the division. Use the Hoffman deal as reference where SJS seemingly got a better return for Hoffman than OTT did because they refused to trade him within the division (or were told they couldn't).

For WPG to only give up a 2nd, Trouba and Dano for Karlsson is outrageous. TOR giving up Kapanen and a 1st would be a bit of an overpayment for one year of Trouba, but if he was to come with an extension, TOR could throw in a 3rd or 4th and I think that's fair value</div></div>
It's actually 1 year @ 5.5M then 1 year of RFA with arb rights so 2 years control of Trouba. Gives them the ability to try and re-sign him after jan 1st for 1.5 years.

Very interesting idea. Doubt divisional rivals make this kind of deal as WPG and MIN would absolutely hate helping the other be competitive but I think this deal does just that for both sides.

Moving Trouba to WSH
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capsin9</b></div><div>besides age what makes trouba better than nisk......and is he really that much better that the caps toss a stud young d man (djoo) in with him....
djoo Imo if he played all 82 games would be close skjei in comparison .....like I said Imo
also not being a dick just asking about your thought process
nick was a top pairing dman for a Stanley cup winning team
nisk had 29 points in 68 games
trouble had 24 in 55 games
if he played top pp he would easily put up 50-55 points</div></div>
Thought process is Trouba is a beast at 5v5. Trouba only had 3 PP points last year (Buff and Myers both get PP time not Trouba) and Trouba is top PK so his point totals at very similar to Niskanens so the statement applies to Trouba too.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>krakowitz</b></div><div>From a Washington perspective, Djoos wouldn't be moved. While Trouba would be a great fit to replace Niskanen both short and long term, Djoos is too big a sacrifice for us. He was actually our 2nd best defender throughout the season, even though he didn't get a lot of heavy minutes. Also given Washington's lack of NHL defensive depth, Djoos is a necessity for us this season. I like the deal if instead of Djoos, it could be done around future assets. We just drafted Martin Ferehavy (or however you spell it) in the second round, and I believe that Washington would much rather make this deal happen that way rather than with Djoos. But the concept is good, swapping Trouba for Niskanen.</div></div>
Understood on the Djoos perspective. Wondering if Wilsons RFA rights instead would be on the table?

You absolutely trade Zdina for Trouba (if you can get him to an extension which being from DET is likely very doable). Zdina is still a prospect and has proven nothing in the NHL. Trouba is a true #1 RHD. That value isn't even close. Add in Lowry and DET is laughing all day at that trade!
WPG absolutely says no to that deal if Lowry is included

Without the Kane deal, the Jets don't have Roslovic also the outcomes of the next season are very different which likely ends up having the Jets NOT getting the #2 OA pick and drafting Laine.

Though I don't doubt that the Sens don't want to part with Mark Stone, with the **** show in OTT and no hope in sight, he may elect to either go to arbitration for a 1-2 year deal and get to UFA so he can get out of there sooner. Duchene and Karlsson could very well both be next on their way out in OTT so why would he want to stay on a rebuilding team? Sorry more like "complete tear down" instead of rebuilding...

Trouba signed long term is why you'd be able to go for Karlsson. That 1-2 punch on the right side for the next 6+ years would be contention status where Buff is likely retiring in 3 years.

If you "could" make all those moves, AND have Tavares take 1 year deal, AND get Hickey on a 1 year deal too to compete for the CUP that team would still be lacking a quality backup. Anything happens to Helley and you're square one. Though I guess that can be said of any teams starter going down. 5 Stars if you "could" pull it off....in reality 1 star but love the idea

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ruahone</b></div><div>Yes he did. He played with Stamkos. Got over 20 goals that season. Trouba's gone, cause they simply don't have the space. Morrissey is not whiny like Trouba and Laine for sure isn't going anywhere. Acquiring someone like Hayes is completely unnecessary.</div></div>
Fair to the Drouin statement (I'm assuming because I admittedly don't follow Tampa that closely and thought that was the year Stamkos was injurred). On the Trouba aspect I completely disagree. Trouba isn't gone because "they simply don't have the space". He's the reason you make space. You don't just trade 23 year old top pairing RHD away because you don't have the space. You move the Myers, Kulikov, Perrault, Mason, Buff, basically anyone but him! He's also no Whiny as you state. There was a lot of initial anger from WPG fans when he requested his trade but when you sit down and rationalize what happened it starts to make sense. Kids got the talent, was anchored next to Stuart behind Buff and then they went out and traded for Myers who he also ended up behind. His potential earning power being hindered by being behind those two guys, and anchored next to Stuart were going to cost him millions of dollars and he wasn't happy about that despite being better than Myers, and on a path to being a #1 guy. So he used what little leverage he had to make a point/statement. Now he's got what he wants, he's playing with an excellent D partner for a contending team with a bunch of guys his age who all seem to get along well. THE ONLY REASON Trouba would want out is if you believe the family life "rumors" that have circulated the past few years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>orignalsix</b></div><div>Strange how a rental like Myers gets so much return but a RFA like Hayes gets about the same.</div></div>
Strange that they're actually both technically rentals....Hayes needs to sign a contract but if he goes to Arbitration and gets a 1 year deal he's UFA after next season...Myers has a deal for next year already and is UFA at the end of it. So they're actually VERY comparable except that Myers actually has a year on his deal signed at the moment.
