<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Your defense is probably going to be lacking to make a true playoff run.
I think you got what you could get.
The Lindholm deal looks like a net positive especially if you can rebuild Kuzmenko’s value.
The Tanev deal was about what you could expect. A prospect you like plus a 2nd
The Hanifin deal became a pure rental cost because he was leveraging his want. As soon as Boston shifted to acquiring Lindholm, I think the return was kind of inevitable.
At what point do you think Poirier will be ready to come up?</div></div>
I don't imagine they're going to rush Poirier in any sense given he's coming off of a pretty serious injury. Honestly, he's been a little prone to it as well so I don't think he's on track for the NHL as others might think. Conny may be content with running with the core we got and see who really steps up. A long playoff run is a very lofty goal but this team is demonstrating that they can find ways to get a win which is as much as you really want from any team.
In a lot of ways, the pressure is off. We can't be a top, cup contender. We can't lose enough to secure a top 3 draft pick. We still have the capacity to win games and the players we brought in really want to be here. And, again, I have to highlight the fact that everyone that was moved out didn't really see a future for themselves here, with the exception for Tanev.
This is as close to "retooling on the fly" as you can come.

Yeah, I couldn't make it work without moving additional salary.
If we retain half on Tanev, other salary has to be moved. This was more just to see if I could get the Gaudreau contract in and under the cap.

Definitely a "partial" joke on the Toffoli front and even then I'd give you a 1.5 out of 5 for it. That was the best you could get for an aging winger these days and, obviously, has NO bearing on a trade for a defenseman, so keep your day job.
Many of your peers have been offering a similar package for Hanifin given he's in his prime and a perfect piece to fill a major gap in your blueline. You can't acquire a top pairing defenseman without giving up something and there are other teams in the hunt for Hanifin.

Building backend
Going from what Don Maloney has said in press conferences, the team is still looking to be competitive over the next little while here. Sutter really did a number on the moral of the room and it had a huge impact on the players this season. We are looking for a major change in culture with whomever comes in for the GM/Head Coach role but whoever it is will likely be looking to make this team a contender.
That said, it's going to be difficult for us to keep all of Toffoli, Backlund, Lindholm, and Hanifin. With Kylington coming back next year Hanifin may be the one we move and I like this trade for the Flames.

Cheap Low Risk Acquisition Options
Drouin is an interesting option for sure. It'd all come down to cost but I really think it's worth entertaining it because he's theoretically the exact kind of winger we are missing at the moment. Now I say theoretically because how many years have various teams been waiting for him to be what they think he can be.

Kapanen is an interesting thought.
Given this is a 23/24 trade I would be inclined to consider it if there was some salary retained; just to ease the caphit costs, could even find a 3rd party if needed.
Lucic may come back on a league minimum, he's found a solid leadership role here, but he may retire soon.
Over the next 2 years, apart from moving core players, these are the kinds of deals the Flames will be limited to given how close we are to the ceiling.

Yeah. I'm not sure what's going on with him either but I've seen some Ranger fans reacting the way we used to with Bennett; frustrated that it's not panned out and advocating for a change of scenery.
This year and the next, we're so close to the cap that moves just aren't easy and things really open up in 24/25 where we have lots of cap space and some veterans to build around.

(MTL/CGY) - Toffoli for Heineman, Pitlick, 2022 1st, 2023 5th
Been a Toffoli fan for a while now and it's good to see this finally done after being rumoured for so long.
I kind of like that there's additional term on Toffoli's deal given the cost of acquisition; we could've just as easily paid this price for a pure rental. And it could've been either a player who'll command a huge raise next year or veteran who'll want to sign somewhere else in the summer.
BT made the team better now without overly complicating the cap over the next couple of years.

I think I could live with that amendment.
Honestly, the idea of getting Dvorak and Toffoli is absolutely something I'd like to happen. The only hang-up for me is what it does for our cap next year.
With the season JG, MT, and AM are having I feel like we need their extensions sorted (one way or another) before we go shopping at the deadline.
If it looks like we're going to lose 1 or more of that three then Tre would probably make this deal in a heartbeat, then try and move those players that aren't extending before July 1.

Would do the same deal for a retained Toffoli tho if flames would rather that.</div></div>
There was a time that I'd be interested in either/both.
The issue for us, imho, is cap space. Both this year and next.
If we hadn't signed Coleman a trade for Dvorak would've been an easy 'yes' but with Dvorak's contract there are bigger ripple effects contract wise down the road.

Optimistic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div> I just think it's a pipedream to want an arm and a leg for a guy on a 1 year contract I just dont see it. Taylor Hall set the price tag on what I see as a trade and what most people see as a trade. Retooling doesn't mean you get a piece for a piece in that year. This could be one of the best things that Calgary could do. Reset and you look to hit some big market players in Free Agency.</div></div>
I can see where you're coming from but from our side of things we're not, at this time, interested in moving Gaudreau; trade deadline rolls around and there's still no extension, maybe there are different conversations happening. Ultimately we are not under any pressure at the moment to ship him out.
And as far as free agency goes, I just don't agree with what you're proposing here. Relying on free agency to simply fill gaps is risky enough, waiting on <em>next year's</em> free agency to sign (edit: grammar) major pieces is way too risky because there are way too many moving targets when we're over a year out. Yes, some players <em>right now</em> may look like they won't get resigned next free agency but a lot is going to go down in the next year and some of those teams may find ways to keep those players.
Again, the Flames are in a "retool and try to win now" mode and we need to be adding to the roster, not subtracting and hope it works out.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div>Top LW would be Matthew Tkachuk at this point, and with how the Center role is, interestingly enough you won't even get close. Tell me how your team isn't in a retool. You see next year's free agency class. You guys have regressed over the past 2 years, and during yesterday Edmonton completely passed you up on the list for chances to push for playoff spots. Vancouver is on the edge as well but Seattle made a bunch of moves, and I'd bet they would do better than you guys at this very point as well. You have 12 Million in cap space to sign 5 quality players and a backup tendy. Kylington, Zadorov, Valimaki, Mackey, Dube, and Gawdin are all still neding to be re-signed. Zadorov's original ask was 5.9 Million and it just recently came down to 4 million. So that leaves about 8 Million to spend on a backup goaltender and 5 different players. Need I mention Flat cap. Tkachuk is going to get a raise, Gaudreau is going to want a raise, Mangiapane is going to want a raise, that also doesn't show you how much Monahan is gonna want in 2 years. 1st Round Pick, 3rd Round Pick, Middle 6 Forward (Played a ton of Top 6 minutes), and a quality Joel Hofer which can be switched in for someone else but Hofer is worth around probably a 2nd in terms of quality ceiling. On 1 year left on a deal. You won't get anything more for someone like this. If you want to look at players with similar production and on 1-year deals. Hall 50% retained, Lazar for 2021 2nd and Anders Bjork. 2022 1st Round Pick is better than a 2021 2nd Round Pick and I'm going to say a 3rd Round Pick, Hofer, and Sanford probably gets you more than Bjork. Plus you aren't giving up another piece like Lazar. So tell me how stupid I am when the market it set itself up that way. You really think I didn't read into it? Calgary won't have money to sign both Tkachuk and Gaudreau, and when Monahan is up in a couple of seasons from now.</div></div>
I mean I was talking about how the <em>move </em>didn't feel like a "retool" move, rather it feels more like a "rebuild" move. If we move Gaudreau we'd have to find some way to find those goals and points and this trade simply leaves us with too much of a gap to bridge. So, we'd only consider a move like this if we were throwing in the towel and looking to the future.
And, well, we <em>are </em>retooling. Last year BT bet on some 800k contracts having breakout or bounce-back years and lost on all of those bets. This time around he's making more intentional additions that fit with a coach that has every intention of making this team competitive. The 6 year deal for Coleman is a retool move. Same goes for Zadorov.
We are in a tricky cap situation but until extensions start rolling in shipping out key difference makers is a complete mistake. Honestly, the player that's higher on the list of getting moved is Monahan given how well Lindholm fit into the centre position.
And, for the record, Gaudreau has 42 (edit: actually 52!) more points than Tarasenko in 11 less games and is 2 years younger. Tarasenko can be the difference maker that can swing games at times but his injury history leaves a lot to be desired.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div>I didn't say rebuild I said retool</div></div>
Trading our top LW and cornerstone of our offensive production is not a "retool" move, especially considering the return you have here: potentially late 1st round pick, a 3rd 2 years from now, a goaltending prospect (that we don't need btw), and a top-6 2-way forward winger (that we have multiple of already). This is the kind of return is similar to when we traded Iginla a few years back. He was nearing the end of his career and the Flames were in a full fledged rebuild mode; other teams knew we couldn't ask for much more than we got.
We're not in that position with Gaudreau, not by a long shot.
A retool move would've been Gaudreau for Tarasenko straight-up. Change of scenery for two players that each had a down season last year.
