Buddy of mine is a huge Ranger fan...simply put he wasn't worth the money lol. He's a declining 3rd pairing PP specialist that's a liability in his own end.

Pretty much this, Shatty is declining a shell of his former self.

Ya, I think its understandable. Its not like Shatts was a bad guy on/off the ice. I think the saddest part is just how quickly he fell off. He was a 40+ point d-man and coming off a career year with 56 points and then goes back to back years with sub 30pt seasons.

Im just glad something happened
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Treize131</b></div><div>We have to trade a few people. We have no room.
I'm going by numbers relative to what other similar players have signed and then scaled accordingly. We are going to have to pay more than the salaries I've been seeing here; this is me calling it.</div></div>
According to EW's 2019 contract projections, which have been fairly accurate so far:
Bennett - $2,795,669 x 3 years
Mangiapane - $908,833 x 2 years
M. Tkachuk - $7,836,132 x 6 years
Rittich was not listed, as no other goalies were listed, but he will receive no less than Talbot and likely not above 500k more so to be safe lets go with the max.
Rittich - $3,250,000 x 3 years
TOTAL = $14,793,884
Currently the flames have $9,973,292. If we trade Frolik only that gives us $14,273,292 in cap space. putting us at -520,592 and a 24 man roster. since the max roster is 23 one of Quine, Dube or Mangiapane will be sent to minors freeing up at minimum $735,000. Thus putting us under the cap,
Personally i think they will sign for these numbers:
Tkachuk: 8M x 7/8 years
Rittich: 2.75M (match Talbot) - 3M x 3 years
Bennett: 2.5M - 2.75M x 3 years
Mangiapane: 975K x 2 years
TOTAL = 14.225min, 14.725max
Both totals are still below the cap from just trading Frolik alone.
Sure if we can get value for trading Stone then go for it but he might be playing on our 3rd pair this year

Still Work to Be Done
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Treize131</b></div><div>Can someone explain the interest in Zucker?
I'm really not familiar with the Wild so I can only really look at his numbers and as far as term, AAV, and point production goes I don't really understand why him ending up on the Flames is almost a given (at least as far as this site is concerned).
Definitely not trolling either, I legitimately don't understand.</div></div>
Fair question, I asked it myself when I heard the rumors. After looking in to it, like <a href="/users/KH44" target="_blank">@KH44</a> said, he is quietly a very solid player. He is fast, responsible, plays with some grit and puts up decent points (on a not so good Wild club). He is also in the right age group. His contract is a little high, but should be manageable and he is a definite upgrade on Frolik in our top 6. Can't overlook that he is available and wouldn't be too expensive. I was on the Kadri bandwagon, but now that he is gone I was looking at other rumored options (Tyler Johnson, Kreider, etc.) and I think Zucker is our best bet that is left.

He is fast and skilled, and provides some great offensive upside. Defensively he is okay, but he scores well and uses his speed. Evolving Wild (<a href="https://evolving-hockey.com/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://evolving-hockey.com/</a>) have him as the 30th most effective forward in the league over the past two years. He is quietly very good, by having some good strengths, and few weaknesses.

We definitely prefer to shed salary wherever possible; ideally for Brodie we'd like to see if we could get a top-6 winger with him or with a package that includes him.
I do like your trade though, especially the 2 2nd round picks. I have no idea the development stage of the two players included in the deal; seen Tage Thompson's name pop up here and there.</div></div>
Tage can probably play right away if you have decent guys he can play with. His ceiling is a top 6 winger but more likely he slots into a 3rd line role. Gonna be tough to get a legit top winger out of anyone without taking a bunch of salary and more moving pieces both ways.

Tkachuk is going to command a LOT more; especially with the Skinner signing @ 9m. It's going to be 9mil+</div></div>
Skinner's contract was for all UFA years. I agree that Tkachuk's UFA years will likely cost in the neighborhood of $9M but he has 4 RFA years to get through across his next contract. I don't think his AAV will go above 9-10% of the cap 7.5M on 4 year, $7.8M on a 5 year or $8.25M on a 6 year are my guesses and given Tkachuk's comments about the Mathews deal my expectation is his camp is pushing to get the UFA ASAP. With a guy like Tre (who has negotiated RFA contracts extremely well) on the other side of the table I think that means coming down on $ to get the term they want.
I also think the upper end UFA ship has sailed unless a lot of salary is moved out. The Flames will need a UFA goalie but that's it so far.
I think OP's Neal trade would not happen as Neal absolutely cratered his trade value with the season he just had. Nobody is giving up anything for him right now except for a anchor type contract in return. I think the Flames should see if last year was a blip/bad season or truly a regression at age 30 and address near Xmas time.

Preparing for Expansion
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheFlamingC</b></div><div>I love this post. You could see a lot of thought went into it. Only thing I would change would be to protect Bennett and Dube instead of Backlund. I would make side deals for them to select Backlund and slide Dube into his role.
<strong>Unpopular Opinion Coming</strong>: Gio must be traded next offseason. We can't protect him and need to make room for Kyl on his natural side. Gio is a great player and I don't think any reasonable side deal could be made to keep him on our team post-expansion draft. He is also bound to tail off so might as well trade him while we can get a good return</div></div>
I definitely was tempted to protect Dube & Bennett outright over Backlund, but I think until they put up 40 points playing against the top lines of our opponents that the Flames still may keep Backlund (as he has done this the last few years). Would not have an issue if they leave Backlund exposed to stay younger though.
As for trading Gio prior to the expansion draft, there is definitely logic in that move, but I don't think as an organization we do that unless they miss the playoffs next season. He is the captain and career Flame, so I think they instead make a deal to keep him safe. Removing emotion from the equation, you would probably just leave him unprotected, and if Seattle takes 38 year old Gio then so be it.

Lehner probably signs for big money, Kinkaid is hot and cold, Bobrovsky might price himself out of Calgary (worth it), Varlamov wasn't even starting for Colorado in the playoffs. I like Rittich, but I think he needs a vet 1A with him. Not sure if that can be found for an affordable price in FA.

Getting Bob
Honestly, I keep flip flopping on what I think CBJ should do with Bob.
My heart says that he wants to stay in Columbus and Bob would sign a team friendly contact, similar to Wennberg, Atkinson, Jones, Jenner, etc.
Bob will be 30 soon, so not getting any younger. He is in his prime, and playing very well.
My personal opinion is...with the Panarin situation, CBJ is in flux and would definitely want a bona fide scorer to replace him.
If CBJ is out of the playoff hunt, and if they really think they can bring Kivlikens over next year from Europe to replace Bob (and he is the heir apparent to Bob), then they very well might cut Bob loose.
Since they lose leverage in the Panarin situation (since he could walk for nothing next summer), they could use Bob to bring in a top game breaking scorer.
Since they have drafted very well since Jarmo & John Davidsson arrived, they probably would place more emphasis on draft pick over a young prospect.
So, to summarize, a top scorer (or center) and draft picks are what I think would be the ask from Columbus.

I left Brouwer in there because I'm embracing my pessimism that he'll stick around; even with him around we have a lot of cap space.
As for line combos, DSP and Duclair aren't exactly guaranteed a spot that high so this would still give Gawdin and Foo a real shot at making the team.</div></div>
think Foo has a real shot as does Mangiapane, just depending who they sign July 1 might make them destined to start in Stockton regardless.
Not many make the jump straight from junior to the NHL, I thin Gawdin is at least a year out from prime time

Redoing the Gaudreau trade I made last night
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Treize131</b></div><div>Flames Fan here.
Vanderm kind of nailed it from our perspective. Personally, I'm a big fan of Holtby's work but I really don't see this working out for us. As much as I'd love to have a goalie of Holtby's caliber and age, losing Gaudreau (who hit 84 pts this year with a major slump near the end of the season) is a lot of points we'd have to find again in addition to the scoring problem we're already facing.
I do appreciate the thoughtful trade though.</div></div>
Tavares has also been NYI's narrative in offering trades for Holtby. Makes sense.
Probably wouldn't have to be a superstar for superstar deal, though. The Caps have Holtby, Grubauer, and Samsonov. Someone might be moving, and if so an offer doesn't have to be fair, just better than the other 29 bids, or better suited to whichever direction Washington is going this summer.
