Boone Jenner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wreckless</b></div><div>What are your biggest areas of need?</div></div>
Number 1 imo is a top pair RD (Obviously Jenner isn't bringing a return that would definitely fill that, but a young RD prospect with upside would probably be something they'd look for)
Jiricek is the only guy in the org currently that could be that for them. While I'm very confident in him as a prospect and think the recent issues with him will easily smooth over with staff changes in the offseason, putting all their eggs in that basket with absolutely no alternative would be unwise.
2nd is probably goalie.
The future with Elvis is unknown, Tarasov looks like he's not long for the NHL once the FO who loves him is gone. Jet Greaves has shown some really good things, but is still a big unknown for the NHL long term. Idk, goalie prospects are weird, you don't see them traded as much, and I doubt Montreal would have a guy that's both good and they'd be willing to move. That's probably need no. 2 tho.
Those are the 2 that stick out. Middle 6 C (ideally 2C upside) is maybe something else they'd look for, especially with Jenner moving out. It's not a NEED like it was a while back, but adding more there to have more options Down the line is never bad.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div> Voronkov, too. I'm a huge fan of Fantilli/Sillinger/Voronkov being the top 3 centers going forward, then we just rotate in a veteran 4C (like Kuraly) for however long we need to. That's assuming Boone gets traded or moved to the wing, a la Tavares. We're also likely to have a top-5 pick, so we may pick up another center option there, in which case Sillinger would be shaping up to be an insanely good defensive-minded 3C.</div></div>
Yeah, I was also going to mention that Voronkov could slot in at C as well, KJ MAYBE moves there eventually, tough it's looking less and less likely, and Brindley is the main guy in the system that could maybe be a factor too. Got distracted and just hit send though 😅😅 Same sentiment between us both though. While it's not a sure thing obviously, I'm a lot more confident they have the answers in the room than I was 6 months ago.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wreckless</b></div><div>Harris is already a top 4 D, and it’s just his second year.
Mark my words about Ylonen. And my question is what pick would it take on top of that?
Boone Jenner isn’t getting any young, and Kirby Dach got traded for a 1st and a 3rd, and Newhook for the 31st and 37th overall picks.
My guess is Winnipeg’s 1st should be more than enough with the rest of that package.</div></div>
Idk anything a out Ylonen, so I can't speak on that, but Columbus is more than set at LD for the future. Can't imagine they'd move out Boone if that's the highlight, even of you want to say he's for sure a top 4 d now. For Columbus to have any chance of moving him, it'd take both a big overpay and the returning assets would need to fill needs, not areas of surpluss.

Zegras Trade
There's plenty to be said about CBJ not moving Jiricek to begin with, but that's no fun to just say that right?
(However, if you do care, Jiricek is literally the ONLY road to a legit 1RD they have in the system currently and then really need him to work out, so I have a tough time seeing anything materializing unless he just straight up said he would refuse to play for them. Really doubt it gets to that though, since they should have a new FO and HC this summer that won't BS him out of minutes trying to showcase horrible players for trades.)
Anyway on the trade, Columbus is very well set at LD for the future, so if they were to entertain a Jiricek/Zegras swap kind of trade, I can't see it including the other 2 players here. Just doesn't fit a need for Columbus to add Zellweger, good as he's looked, so can't see them moving off KJ now that they seem to be past the rocky bit with him.
Personal thoughts though, aside from the Jiricek trade likelihood stuff - With how good Sillinger has looked as of late, I'm not too sure center will be a need for Colombus anymore, at least not as much. Fantilli/Sillinger/Jenner down the middle while also having a few guys in the system is looking fairly realistic as a quality lineup down the line now.

Yeah, I think those 2 make a lot more sense for NYR though. Plus non an in division trade so more realistic.

I think it's pretty interesting cause Boone definitely fits the way NYR would like to play in a vacuum, but what you said is super valid. I think he'd probably get time on PP2, but definitely not sniffing the top unit lol. And 3C is tough too. With the price CBJ would ask to even consider moving him, I don't think it makes sense for a team who'd stick him at 3C to pull the trigger. Really only makes sense value wise for the receiving team of they're gonna put him at 2LW/2C imo, and even that's an if since the CBJ asking price will always outweigh his raw value.

In a world where EP got moved AND he was willing to extend with Columbus, I still don't think it makes sense for CBJ. Vancouver is absolutely fair for asking a team's ransom like that, but Columbus is so far away from being anywhere near good that trading the farm for an elite player that'll be 28 or 29 by the time they could hope to be good doesn't make any sense (with a HOPEFULLY rational GM at this point in the summer).

Let the kids play out the season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>As a Detroit fan it's close for me. The biggest drawback for me is in the 4 previous seasons he has played in about 60% of the games and has already missed 12 this season. That's a whole lot to give up with his injury history. If Larkin knew Yzerman had a chance to bring Werenski to Detroit he might never forgive Yzerman. I don't think Detroit is in a position to make a significant move. A big part of of Detroit's core for years to come is still playing in the AHL and a couple in other leagues. Now Husso hasn't played a game since Dec. 18th but Lyon is playing well 5th in SV% and 13th in GAA.
The part below I copied and pasted from another one of my posts on the subject.
The goal this season was to compete for a playoff spot longer in to the season. If they do make the playoffs it's a bonus but honestly this team isn't a playoff team and it was never meant to be, especially with their D. Yzerman filled out the roster with UFAs when he could've gotten some better players through trades but he didn't because this team was never meant to be a playoff team. Now DeBrincat pretty much fell into Detroit's lap and they couldn't pass it up. Petry wanted to finish out his career in his home town and Detroit got him with $2.3M cap hit for Lindstrom and a 4th. So the 2 trades Detroit made were after the roster was filled out. Plus if Detroit makes the playoffs I wouldn't expect them to be buyers unless they can get someone who can help the team for several season to come. Now I've had a lot of people here disagree with my view. Saying there is no way they put a team together not to make the playoffs or there is no way they don't buy heading into the playoffs. <strong><em>But a whole lot of people here are very impatient!!</em></strong> With a direct correlation between players developed in your own system and long term success. Why waste prospects and picks to just marginally improve the team. Even if Detroit makes the playoffs and buys at the TDL do they make it out 1st round? Probably not they would be up against a better team with a ton of playoff experience.</div></div>
Really well put. I love seeing people be realistic about their team. Detroit is in a good spot for the future and it's really frustrating to see people in your own fanbase be so impatient, not unlike Columbus in some ways. (Gross incompetence like we've seen from Columbus HC/GM is a different story than realistic expectation for the next 2-3 seasons, but anyway).
Ilthis is obviously not an all in move or something, but it is giving up a big chunk of cap and super valuable young asset for more win now/next couple years type pieces. Could definitely be something that would help Detroit long term, but could be detrimental as well.
Was gonna add 1 more thing but forgot it haha

Same thought I'm having basically. If Werenski was still on a bridge for like 6 mil, it think it'd be fairly realistic. He's just got such a big cap hit for a non elite D man and Detroit needs to be smart w their money.

I'd really like both of these for CBJ. I'm not necessarily "pro trade Werenski", but I do think there's a discussion to be had there. I kinda doubt Detroit would want to move Edvinsson to have Z count that much against their cap though. That's the kinda deal that makes sense, but just don't think DET would want to move him. Also like the idea of Elvis there too, he'd be totally fine on a team that can defend competently.

The Hall of Very Good
Hmmmm, interesting. Definitely agree with most of this, will highlight a few I don't:
Marner - Point totals + defensive game will outweigh (to this point) lack of postseason success
Bobrovsky - 2 Vezinas alone may be enough, but several other high quality seasons + last playoffs helping on the narrative side
Hellebuyck - Similar to Bob, very similar career stats (few years behind), could very well have 2 Vezinas as well soon, just without the "he sucks in playoffs" baggage
McAvoy/Heiskanen - Not in the exact same boat but similar. Simply too early for me. Heiskanen is really breaking out offensively now, so the point totals will help his case. Unlike the other younger guys on the list, I think these guys are on a path to have LEGIT chances so I don't agree with them.
Backstrom - 1k points is big, injury issues last few years may give him the benefit of the doubt for some who may otherwise say no. Somewhat tied to Ovi as well and maybe that plays a role?

Jiricek for Zegras
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caerii</b></div><div>It's kinda weird. All of a sudden the last week or so it seems like Jiricek's perceived value has skyrocketed to generational levels for no clear reason? Don't get me wrong, it should be high. But Zegras+2 or 3 overall for Jiricek and a 2nd? That's approaching lunacy.</div></div>
The value he has to Columbus is huge factor. As for outside teams valuing him higher than he deserves, I'm not sure. But unless things DRASTICALLY deteriorate to the point that he flat out refuses to play for them (which I really doubt happens with a new FO + Coach hopefully coming in soon), there's no incentive for Columbus to move him. Top pair RD is something that really only he can fill with their current pipeline. It really can't be understated how important it is for CBJ's future that he works out. So, unless another RD that at least has some potential to do that is coming back in a trade, it's really tough to see them pulling the trigger, regardless of Jiricek's current (justified) frustration. It'd really have to be a big overpay for Columbus to make a deal that's for a C or picks or whatever imo. There's just simply not enough pressure from Jiricek as it stands for them to not ask a king's ransom if they even entertained anything.

All I did was say that it doesn't make sense for Columbus to move Jiricek and not be bringing RD back in some capacity (Doesn't make sense to move Jiricek to begin with, but that's not the point here). Which is exactly why this makes 0 sense. I'm not telling you to ignore Chicago's situation. Just have some awareness of the team your trying to trade with. The same way you're saying Chicago has no reason to move Korchinski, Columbus has no reason to move Jiricek for a package that fills 0 needs.

In a world where Columbus did actually end up entertaining offers or Jiricek, the pieces in the return here just don't make sense. They're stacked at LD for the future between Werenski, Meteychuk, Svozil, and Ceulemans. The biggest reason Jiricek is so unlikely to be moved even if the relationship sours further is because a long term top pairing RD is something that only he can fill for Columbus. They don't have anyone else on the roster or pipeline with anywhere near the potential to be that, so trading him for a LD and winger just doesn't make sense need wise.

Tanev and Jenner and Bogosian and Maroon
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>In regards to the first part: my reasoning for leaning pro-moving Jenner is because I think he hasn't been the best captain/leader, and a shakeup there might shake up the whole room and organization. But it's got to be preceded by firing Jarmo and JD, which has turned into the ultimate boys club IMO. Few FOs have as much job security for as little on-ice success as those two, and the whole organization of old needs to go to move forward.
In regards to the second part: yeah, Elvis + Greaves makes too much sense for next year, and the fact that the FO has other plans is part of why I'm also pro-new-FO. :)</div></div>
Agreed fully honestly. I do think Jenner has those qualities (maybe not quite as much as some think), but there is a point to just shaking up everything and letting the young core really develop their own locker room culture as they develop on the ice considering how bad it is right now. I'd have big questions for anyone who isn't pro new FO at this point. If they're not gone after this season, there are big issues. I've been very in tune with Jarmo through the years as far as team vision goes. I like that he accepted they needed to move off of Savard, Foligno, ect and accept being bad for a few years. I even agreed that it didn't need to be a full on rebuild. I've just hated the specific moves he's made to a large extent. Trading for Laine, trading for Provorov, the coaching hires, on and on and it's long past an infuriating level. Initially, I didn't think JD needed to go too, but I've learned that he shares a lot of the same views, and even if that wasn't the case, he'd still have Jarmo's stench on him. I just really hope they don't mess up this cycle of hiring a new FO and coach this offseason. They've got so much to work with, another top 5 pick. With good management and some luck, the team could have an incredible future. Really hoping they don't miss here.

Tanev and Jenner and Bogosian and Maroon
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>Pretty much spot on again. The only hiccup is the current FO thinks Tarasov is the future in net (where I personally think it's Greaves), and they'd probably set his asking price a little higher. I'd be all for shipping him out for a mid-round pick and rolling with Greaves-Elvis next year.
What I'm thinking:
Jenner = 1st, A prospect (Minten) and likely a 2nd.
Tarasov = 4th
Sammy = ~7th to dump, but it makes sense to keep him if you can and see if he rebounds, or only move him as a cap casualty to upgrade elsewhere
So put it all together, and I think Jenner and Tarasov for Sammy, Minten, 2024 1st, 2024 3rd (NYI) and 2025 3rd probably gets it done. (assuming 2nd + 4th + 7th = 3rd + 3rd approximately, and again contingent on Jenner actually becoming available)</div></div>
I'm really split on moving Jenner (likelihood aside). I keep going back and forth between whether it's worth it or not. Ultimately I think the "right" move by a tiny margin is moving him. I think the fact this team is a couple years away from being any good and his age/injury history recently could lead to him being a far smaller factor than we may expect on the ice when the team gets to that point. So I think the upside of a guy like Minten and another late 1st + is really starting to make sense and maybe outweigh the benefits of Jenner as a locker room guy and leader. Not set on that by any means, but as far as "what's best for the future of the team" I am starting to lean that way a bit.
Anyway, I'm 100% with you on rolling with Elvis/Greaves next year. If they're gonna have to pay or retain to move Elvis, it just doesn't make sense at this point in time with how far away they are. Again, realism with this FO vs what I think is best, but Tarasov has had his chance as far as I'm concerned and we've seen he's not gonna be the guy. He's 100% got unlucky with injuries, but I've seen enough to move on. Elvis has been up and down for sure and has the contract, but he's dramatically outperforming Tarasov behind the same team, and the numbers are good enough that you'd think he'll be at least solid if they ever figure out how to defend. Then, Greaves has some issues with his size, sure, but he's so fantastic technically that I think he's got a really good shot to overcome it. Even if he doesn't turn into a "real" starter, I think there's a fair chance we'll see him turn into a solidified NHL player that'll at least be a solid backup or mediocre 1B. I don't see any reason not to go into next season with those 2 as your NHL pair personally, but the FO obviously has other ideas.
