If I at gunpoint was forced to trade Leon and Connor against my will
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oliver_wahlstrom</b></div><div>its McDavid, automatic franchise altering guy. Hall of famer, first ballot, 25 years old and entering his prime. You make this move, having an elite defense and top 3 goalie in the NHL. All we would need is to clear some cap and then sign some guys. I am not saying we should, but any McDavid trade would need this value</div></div>
This would be bad for isles. Gretzky won zero Cups in LA Edmonton won 1 more without him. Giving up that many assets no matter how great the player for 1 player is moronic

My advice would be to make the gunman prove his gun was loaded first.

Laf pre-draft was ranked in the tier just under mackinnon and matthews.
Laf absolutely had a very high pre-draft pedigree. He had a great D-1 WJC, he was dominant in the Q, and he was ranked as a potential "superstar".
Laf post draft has absolutely strugged, but has shown an ability to score 5v5, and considering the overall ice time he's gotten the rangers aren't moving him without a huge unprecedented haul coming back.

Islanders trade
Isles have a log jam at forward already, and Hollstrom could be a guy that makes the team on top of that, which makes them sellers at the forward position. Trade makes no sense to them

He’s a good player on Toronto. He’s heavily overrated by leafs fans tho.

Kerfoot isn’t that good. He isn’t worth Mayfield.
Also Johnston’s contract can be buried without penalty.
That being said Kevin Kurz says he’s been talking to a scout who loves Ross Johnston. He also said he didn’t understand why the scout loves him lol.

Terrible value for the isles. I’d rather have Bailey than Muzzin. Mayfield for Kerfoot isn’t good value either.

That's true. But the point still stands. 2 years of Beauviller isn't worth two assets of similar value to him.

The Trade That Makes Sense
Isles are married to their forward group. Kerfoot doesn't move the needle enough, not to mention opening up a big hole on RD this close to the start of the season with no viable replacement makes no sense for NYI

Pelech is a great defenseman, but I think his contract running until he is 35 made me a little wary. You are right though, for the time being its really good. Definitely could swap with Toews probably. I also want to see the Pelech/Pulock pairing play in the post-Trotz era. I see your point though.

McAvoy is getting paid what is expected of the top 1RD. Carlo's 4.1 is a steal for your young 2RD when you have contracts like Risto, OEL, Trouba out there in the same roles. You are missing the point.

Why is everyone so down on the Isles? The makeup of the team is not bad whatsoever. Elite goaltending, the defense has been improved ten fold, and the forward group is half decent.

Matty

Bellows has completed his D+6 year and in all that time has achieved a "career" of a grand total of 67 games, in which he has recorded all of 25 points -- only 4 more points than Milan Lucic did playing in all 82 games last season. Lucic also has certain intangible and, to those he's hit, tangible qualities that don't always show up on the score sheet. I'm not saying that NY should be happy to trade Bellows for him one-for-one, but I am saying that wasting your 2023 first-round draft pick to make the exchange is truly horrible asset management. And why are you trading away perfectly good and incredibly cheap fourth liners? Yours is a team that needs cap space, which means yours is a team that needs minimum-level contracts.
Bellows for Ritchie and a second would be an overpay. This trade is awful. And I say that as a fan of two teams competing with yours in the same division. Awful.

Forward group wasn’t that young tho, and it lacked high end talent and depth.

Not likely...supposed to $1 million increases until 2025-26 season (once they get escrow balanced out).
Here are the <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/salary-cap">salary cap projections</a>
We haven't felt the brunt of the 'flat cap' yet.
