How much cap space is left
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>VeeMerk</b></div><div>I'll pretense this by saying that players are getting greedy and over-payed. That being said, He has been the leafs best player and I would compare his salary to Tavares and Matthews. He doesn't deserve less than them. They all should have been paid $10.5 and call it a day.
If Dubas doesn't move quickly, an offer sheet is going to screw you guys.</div></div>
He doesn't deserve as much as Tavares as he was a UFA. UFAs get more than RFAs. Would the Leafs have been willing to pay Tavares 11 million AND give up 4 firsts?
In regards to Matthews vs Marner, Matthews is likely a tad overpaid. But he is both a goal scorer and a centre. Both of those are worth a lot more.
In their first two years of their contract Matthews was in another tier to Marner. In their third year (contract year), Marner gets to play with one of the best centres in the league and all of a sudden is in the same tier.
Regardless the most an RFA winger off ELC has gotten in the CBA is Tarasenko at 7.5 million.
The most an RFA winger has ever gotten was Kucherov (but remember Kucherov was a year from UFA so could always have gone to arbitration, gotten 1 year and forced UFA as Stone did).
Everyone can talk about him deserving 10 or 11 million or whatever but it's literally never been done. 9 million is literally unprecedented.

Getting a 3C Explained
IMO if we can get Brassy to play wing and succeed .... it is a very good thing bc then we still have that guy that is able to step in at top 6 C if 87 or 71 go down for a cpl games (as i just knocked on wood) .... Now all we have to do is get a REAL 3rd line center .... again the search continues, lol.
- I think Faksa is obviously the best possible 3 C , He plays the perfect game for a 3C.
- Danault is very under rated IMO, He has the pressure of being a #1-#2 C in MTL and his game is more suited for 3C bc of his ability to take the D zone face offs and play against top lines.
- Gally - I LOVE as a wing and another guy that could explode here ... but IMO he is not a C, def not a 3C
- Lowry - would be an ideal 3C too ...PLUS brings some size to our forward group.
- Coyle - Would be a nice fit = being youngish / good cap hit / Big guy / + he is RH and Sully loves RH centers.... But is his Defensive play and face off ability good enough ??
- Kempe - Id love his speed/size there but dont think LAK move him
- Bennett - He would be a nice fit to share 3C and 4C with Sheahan but is he a C or a LW?
- JPG - IMO he is over rated ... just never really liked or was a fan of his game
- Smith - Unless we can get him for nothing and 1/2 of his cap hit - too slow and inconsistant
- Granlund - Interesting bc i always liked his game - could a trade give him a boost? He is another guy that could split 3C &4C with Sheahan
- OTHER POS. -
B. Schenn, STL - would cost us but he would make this line up perfect at 3C if everyone healthy.
A. Athanasiou, DET - Love his speed but is he a C?
C. Jarnkrok, NSH - Nice player, solid C, Great cap #
B. Nelson, NYI - rental but wow would he fit nice at 3C
V. Hinostroza, ARZ - too small? but he works his bag off
C. Tierney, OTT - My fav here and the ideal 3C... he is a hell of a player and with him and Sheahan at 3C & 4C , id love it.

(MTL / VGK) - Tatar, Suzuki, 2019 2nd for Pacioretty
I see Montreal being big winners here. Although Tatar didn’t have a good run w Vegas after he got traded, he’s still capable of being a 40 point player. Once he gets his numbers back up, Montreal can retain salary on Tatar and get some more assets there. Nick Suzuki is an amazing prospect as well. He’s one of the most defensively responsible forwards in the OHL, and he put up 100 points to go along with it. Throw in a 2nd round draft pick and it’s a great return for Montreal.
All this for a guy who (in all likelihood) wasn’t going to resign. Montreal should’ve had zero leverage in this negotiations and they still came out with an incredible return, especially Suzuki. I never thought I’d say this, but good deal by Bergevin
