Vegas has to take Smith back at his full cap hit, they aren't allowed to bring him back with retention within a year of trading him.
But if Stone is out long term, I could see Vegas bringing Smith back, with his full 5m cap hit, for like a 5th.

Context matters, can't base it solely off of stats. Backups gets more rest between games, get easier matchups, etc.
Brian Elliot had a lower GAA than Vasilevskiy. Eric Comrie had a better save percentage than Juuse Saros. Must mean Elliot is better than Vasy and Comrie is better than Saros</div></div>
.902 and .892 doesn't have any value.
But beyond that, he only played in 25 games last year, same exact number as Nico Daws on his own team, same exact number as Adin Hill, one more than Laurent Brossoit, who both had better stats. That isn't a starter.

He's been better than neither in either of the past two seasons, and holds no value in a trade regardless.

You are correct. Vegas could easily sign him to that contract, they just apparently want to get it lower.
It would only have the cap ramification of Vegas having to run with 22 instead of 23 until Brossoit is ready to play in November when they could take him off IR and run 23 by sending one of the three goalies down if needed.

It's not like there would be a cap strain though.
They would have an extra 500k even if Lehner comes back next year with the cap rising, and no one to re-sign except Howden.
Any of Brisson, Morozov, Dorofeyev could be ready to fill bottom six roles at that time, and any of Cormier, Korczak, Chayka could be ready on the back end.
They would be the same as many teams are every offseason, trading a veteran or two to make room for young guys taking a roster spot.

I do not see how Vegas needs a RHD.
Martinez, McNabb, Hague left side
Pietrangelo, Theodore, Whitecloud right side
Hutton, LHD, is the extra, Korczak plays the right and could definitely get a few games, they re-signed Miromanov who is a RHD.
Martinez can also play the right and has done so for Vegas before.

Because they can flip him for half retained for a 2nd. Vegas gives a 3rd. A 2nd and 3rd for 2.5 million is about the rate.

The price of dumping him needs to be at least that. You certainly aren't getting positive value back for him.
The arizona trade is very intuging though. Have to think arizona takes it. They'll be looking to get about the cap floor and getting Pach is a pretty darn good way of doing it. They might try to send a lesser player than Crouse though.</div></div>
Dadonov will cost less to get rid of in the offseason.
They had a hard deadline to get something done in like a day that is gone now with the summer. He's also helped the cause with his very good end to the season.
Not to mention Vegas could just buy him out for only 667k against the cap this season then 1.5 million more the season after when the cap goes up another million and Vegas has 8.2 million coming off the books on top of it.

LOL no.
You don't get a first round pick and Martinez (and then an extra 3rd in the subsequent trade) for holding 2.5 million for a year. Carolina got a first for taking on like 6 million with Marleau's buyout.

I don't think the last two trades happen. McNabb just re-signed a few months ago, can't really trade him.
Vegas is going to have to have a quiet summer, deals like the first two then signing the RFAs and letting Smith and Janmark walk. Sad about Smith but that's the cap situation they're in.

Vegas wouldn't want to but would have to accept. Dadonov and Brossoit probably have to go.
Even when Dadonov wasn't scoring for those 20 or so games he was actually pretty good at creating some scoring opportunities and still clearly a great locker room guy and you could tell he was giving 100% every shift.
He would be great for Detroit's young players and depending on their situation they could probably get another 2nd with a deadline trade if they are out of it.

Boeser Halak Hamonic
Halak is a backup on a worse team, has started only nine games, and has worse stats than all the current Vegas goaltenders.
He's also 36 and has an NMC that he wasn't eager to waive for anyone, so he would choose exactly where he goes if he ever became willing, which limits the return.
And he's a rental goalie, they don't usually go for much even if they're having a good year.
You'd do good getting a 4th, not a young RHD prospect from a division rival.

Why would they ever waive (and essentially give away a young player playing really well for free) Brett Howden to keep Michael Amadio?
This is like a tell me you haven't watched Vegas without telling me you haven't watched Vegas thing.
More to the point, they could probably just put Patrick on LTIR as he's almost surely not coming back for at least 24 days after that MacKinnon hit to the head.
Moot points however as it seems Lehner will be back before Martinez, or Patrick, and they can just send down Thompson. Whitecloud is also probably tracking back quicker than Martinez, which would allow them to waive a defenseman, if needed.

You're very close to what I think the opening night roster will be.
The only difference I think will happen is Carrier as an extra forward, with a fourth line of Howden at LW, Roy at C and Kolesar at RW.
Unless Krebs destroys at camp and throws everything for a loop.

Kravtsov, straight up.
Nah, just kidding.
If Vegas wants to re-sign Martinez, and they probably do, they're going to need some more cap space because this is his one chance to cash in some. He fits on the team so well and the defense has looked so great this season that I think they will definitely try.
If that's the case then the cap space for Martinez would probably be worth more than what they could get back and I could see just a pick doing it and obviously not a first or second.

Vegas could probably trade Reaves with more of the younger forwards that should be pushing to the team next season but we can't take Strome because of cap and it likely would not cost him anyways so you could trade him to someone else.

23 Man Roster Under The Cap
Martinez is getting a raise not less money. He hasn't had a huge contract yet and already won two Cups and even got a conference final ot goal and cup final ot goal to win both series. He doesn't need to sacrifice money to win and this is his last chance at the most money he can get. And good for him.
He will get at least 5x3, if not higher in UFA. If he wants to stay in Vegas they could possibly work out a 4.5-4.75x3 deal if they think they can swing it.
Much rather that Reaves be the cap casualty than Holden. He has played in the top four multiple times in three seasons when needed for a time and held up his end. He also does fine on a bottom pairing and doesn't complain when he's the seventh. I've also seen him on the bench and the younger defensemen (who are mostly more skilled than him) seem invested in what he's saying, I think he would make a good coach on retirement.
And Kolesar is a physical fourth line player who can play up to the third line when needed and play center in a pinch, things Reaves can't do. He's also just played much better than Reaves. When you add in Brown, Roy and even Dugan and Elvenes waiting in the wings, with Glass and Krebs likely to make it as on your roster, it makes both Nosek and Reaves pretty expendable.
Edit: Also you need to leave around 250,000 extra space for the bonuses from the last two seasons that will be taken from our cap next season. But I think having enough for a 23 man roster isn't so necessary as long as they have enough for 21/22.
