Is this true? I thought the rule was if a team trades a player, they can’t trade back for him with retention. I wasn’t aware it was true if a player left as a FA.

From what I’ve seen recently, no. Essentially they can’t get him at all with retention.

The March Makeover
Vegas doesn’t really have Eichel’s money. The talk is he may be back before the Buffalo game on 3/2. It was just a procedural move to activate Theodore without having to send any forwards back to AHL for now

I think if you’re under the cap and can put him on LTIR at beginning of season then keep your assets.</div></div>
The advantage of being under and then trading him, is you accumulate cap space all season long. So you can makes deals at the deadline and lower those costs because you don’t need retention.
This roster was a full 23 man roster. If I could trade Lehner, and then send Pachal to AHL, that puts them 1.5 million under with 22 guys.
That 1.5 on opening day, is probably worth like 4-5 million on TDL depending on season injuries.

Great point on insurance. Not sure Myself. But I think Vegas is actually in an OK position because it really just comes down to if they want to pay the cost of moving. He can sit on LTIR for them if they want, and they could easily send Pachal through waivers and sign a true 4th C, up to 1.5 million or so then if they wanted.

Eichel
Honestly the value is pretty good on the Eichel trade. Vegas let him get the surgery, played him to get the rust off per se, and ate a season of the salary, so I can see why the value would be a little higher right now.
The flaws I see in the deal, I don’t see Vegas wanting to retain even a million for 4 years in a near flat cap timespan.
Also, I heard a rumor Patrick is still struggling from his last injury (probable concussion) and may start on LTIR if not while year again if no improvement.

And Kolessar is cheaper then taking on those 2 guys. The bottom six is basically filled with Carrier, Howden, Kolessar, Amadio, Leschyshyn, Rondbjerg etc. Plus I think they try a Brisson or Morozov in the bottom 6 this year.
Like I said, I’m very ok trading Kolessar. But it has to be a cap savings. And taking on 2 guys doesn’t make sense for them.

Not against trading Kolessar but if He only cost 1 million for two years, it’s cheaper for Vegas to keep him then two guys that equal 1.5 million. And as cap crunched as Vegas is, the 500k savings is worth keeping Kolessar instead

Vegas says no.
Ferlund does nothing for Vegas now that they have Weber.
If someone signs Roy to an offer sheet, it will probably be at least at the 3rd round level if not more. No sense in giving up a 4th rounder for anything in this deal.
Even with the small retention Dickinson makes more then Carrier, and for a team counting Pennies that won’t make too much sense

What now Jimmy and Al
No way Vegas gives Whitecloud up just to swap Broissoit for Ferlund.
1. They don’t really need anymore LTIR money because of Weber
2. Broissoit and/or Lehner May start the season on LTIR themselves, really making Ferlund useless for that

That trade will never be accepted by Vegas. They would get more for letting him sign an offer sheet they don’t match.

2. Have played at least 80 NHL games if a forward or defenseman, or 28 NHL games if a goalie (applies only for players who have 3 years of NHL service).
3. Be younger than 27 on July 1 of that year.
4. Be without a contract for the upcoming season.
5. Be tendered a qualifying offer by the current team by June 25 or the Monday after that year's NHL Entry Draft (whichever is later)</em>
But maybe I'm missing something...</div></div>

VGK attempt with Smith
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>villenash</b></div><div>Meant for it to be a 2 year deal for Hague actually-- I'll update that
But honestly, with Roy and Hauge-- I think they're pretty ripe for an OS, especially Hague. So I could see VGK paying more to make sure they can retain them. And I thought about $3m for Roy as well but just went a little higher to keep him from signing an OS. I could see anywhere from $2.5-3.5m for Roy on a 2-5 year deal, and $1.5-4.25m for Hague on a 1-6 year deal. But VGK will try to keep them as low as they can for now.</div></div>
Hague can’t be offer sheeted yet. So no worries there. The CBA really hurts younger guys. Vegas has basically complete control. All he can actually do is holdout, but even that needs to end before 12/1. So Vegas can wait him out.
Roy is absolutely the more interesting one, I think if the right package was offered for Roy they would listen, so an offer sheet May not completely scare them. Depends on what they think is the right package.

Trades are good. The Lehner one is interesting. Not sure value, but Vegas probably says yes.
If Hague signs a one year deal, it is for basically for 900k as he is a RFA without arbitration rights. And is too young for an offer sheet. That number is probably a 4-6 year type contract similar to Whitecloud.
I think that’s a little high on Roy, I look as Stephenson as his match and max. And he signed 2.75x4 when he was an RFA still. That’s where I believe Roy comes in at as well

Yeah. That probably makes more sense. That’s essentially what they took for Stastny last off season. A 4th and an AHL Dman.

Vegas isn’t giving a 3rd with Fluery to only get a 7th. His cap hit may be 7million, but the reigning Vezina winner won’t be just tossed aside.

He’s good. But he can’t put his scoring touch to get higher then the 4th line.
I just think because he truly is a bottom 3 type player, he won’t fetch more then a 4th rounder. Especially with 3 years left on his deal.
And I think Vegas would take a 4th, to clear his cap. Similar to selling low on Schmidt last season. The cap space would be the key part
