You say that now in hindsight. A lot of these guys were either a: better defensively b: better offensively than Zacha at the time of contract. Some were even younger.

They are quite different
1. JG isn't a big physical player. His style is the exact opposite of JTs. Guys that play like JG usually age pretty well.
2. JG has been elite since he's been 22. Miller has only really started playing great 3 years ago.

His deal doesn't kick in until he's 30 years old. You're not paying him when he's in his prime. You're paying him past his prime. He's a big physical player. Those guys don't age well. If he was 24 years old it would be a steal.

"In the playoffs you truly want a #1 dman. That’s how you win" You could say look at Nashville with Roman Josi and they can never win. Look at Rangers with Fox and they choked hard in the playoffs. Erik Karlsson didn't win anything. It's a team game. An elite center is the most important piece though. To win you'd probably want both.
Penguins won the cup with Dumo as their top d man against a team that had Roman Josi.
They won because of Crosby. That's what you need to win. A top center. No team can win without one.
Best center in the league McDavid vs. best d man in the league Makar
Everyone is taking McDavid.

I mean he's better than all three guys too.

Why would it matter? They are a western team. Who cares? You get a pick similar to the amount of money that you got from Butcher. Sabres have so much space and it's only a 1 year deal.
> half of if he continues to play like crap.
He's more slightly below average than crap
> Buffalo doesn’t have to look far for AHL caliber goaltending, and it will cost less too.
Aaron Dell is AHL goaltending and he's far worse than Brossoit, Brossoit is NHL backup goaltending.

Brossoit isn't great, but he still would've been the best goalie analytically on your roster excluding UPL. Better than Tokarski, Dell, and Anderson. He's a perfectly capable backup goalie. You'd also be getting a pick to take him.

Teams would easily pay a late first, and probably a first plus (granted the first is later) for a similar rental at the TDL, so for two years, it's not an outrageous ask.</div></div>
That would be fair value if Zibs was signed long term, but for 2 years you'd be getting fleeced. I don't think any team would do that. A blue chip young guy + a high first + for a guy that can walk in 2 years.
That would be more than any player has gotten recently in a trade under similar circumstances.

Scheifele is unquestionably better.</div></div>
Scheifele is better but Kuz is not that far off. Kuz has more term, while Scheifele is cheaper. You are never going to get a perfect comparison.
I was going to say Zibs but he's signed long term now.
How about would you do Perfetti + 13th pick as a starting point for 2 years of Zibs at 6.1M?

A contending team isn't gonna move a legit top 4 RD or top 6 C for a guy that's older and isn't signed long term. That's just not gonna happen. They want to add to their team. It would be picks + prospects.

I just don't think you're gonna get either a legit top 6 C or top 4 RD coming back if you move him. Maybe if he was younger & signed long term.
Ryan Johnson does have top 4D potential though. He's a lefty but has played RD in college. He's a good prospect.

My armchair GM has 21 players. Teams usually carry 22 so they'd still be over the cap or right at the cap.
Yes it's a huge difference from Tampa to Calgary. Losing out on 600k is a big deal lol. It's not overblown. It's why players usually put California teams + Canadian teams on their no trade lists. Bobby Ryan & Marc Methot did a good podcast about NTCs.
Was Duchene seen as an overpay? It was considered a pretty good deal at the time. You can look back at the CapFriendly post and a lot of people were saying steal and that he took less. Remember this was pre-covid. https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/245886 A lot of people expected 9Mish.
Nobody said low tax teams never overpay guys, it's just players are going to keep more of their money. If you want to project Tkachuk's next contract look at Ottawa & Toronto for comparisons instead of Tampa & Florida. He's gonna want more than just his QO that's only 700k more than his brother got.
