Most likely the Habs would pass on this. Harris could be moved for the 2nd pick, but you can remove everything else from that trade.
You have to think like Dubas' trade strategies from the past, and his line of thinking. So he ain't gonna trade for a defensive defenseman, he'll want someone who can put up point be be atrocious in the plus minuses and command a 9M$ or more salary.
Only reason Karlsson's stats were not bad this year is that I'm sure Letang, Crosby and Malkin told him that if he put up 100 pts but had worse than a -5 they'd beat him up with his own sticks. I think you can see Letang telling him "STAY BEHIIND OR I'LL BEAT YOU!" at some point 90% of the games they played this year... LMAO!

The Future-ish
Wait what? Habs trade Anderson and 5th overall to move way down? ...
I mean.. Come on.. They can literally bury Anderson to the AHL for the remainder of his contract and still have enough money to make 4 NHL team payrolls.
That would make absolute zero sense. Especially since all eyes know they are trying to move up in the draft not go down it. They would most likely trade WIN's pick and a player to move up. The 5th is pretty much sealed in unless an actual trade for something worth it comes along.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Hawks like Demidov just as much as you, so would you do this deal?</div></div>
I'm not going to criticize the trade itself, but look at it and wonder why.
I'm thinking that this would go through only if CHI want a defenseman and accept to pass on another forward, even if it's Demidov. They may want to increase their blue line skills in order to set Bedard's future team and ensure a better set of defensive players, hence pick one of the many that will still be there at 5th. On that note, they may comeback and ask for Barron, Harris, Kovacevic, Struble OR Mailloux to be added to the deal, but they would remove one of the WIN or CGY picks to replace it with one of these players. Also, depending on which player it is, HABS may remove one of those first, but provide a 2nd or 3rd instead.

End 2025 MTL
If you want SJS to take on Anderson, at this point his value is low. The compensation is Barron, but Anderson bring it down. So I think SJS may take the chance on him, but for a 3rd or 4th pick in that trade vs the 2025 2nd round pick (PIT). So we'd pay at the very least one round increase to move him out.
If you remove Anderson, SJS may think about the VGK 1st for Barron and either the 2025 2nd round pick (PIT), or if we're lucky, the 2025 3rd round pick (NJD).

Maybe Gallagher and Armia - both defensively responsible and Gallagher is still a pretty decent play driver.</div></div>
Just a note here, if they pick him, they can test him out for 10 games then send him down, so this would be start of year.. a few games... As for his wingers, I can't argue with that. You can put others and test out chemistry.

Trading John Tavares for Josh Anderson because Arpon Basu said so
Basu... I check the clips form his podcast with Godin, and all he does is cut off Godin or stands 2 inches from his laptop camera and says ridiculous things.
First off Tavares would never agree to lift his NMC since his dream is to win with Toronto; so if they have any chance at all to go into the series, he'll stay on. If they look like they won't make it into the series, he may lift it to go to a team in order to have that chance, but only at TDL.
Second, if Treliving doesn't want to keep him in TOR after next year and Tavares doesn't want to lift his NMC, then he'll let him expire. If he wants to keep him here, Tavares may accept a substantial salary drop to have one more chance at it in Toronto.
Third the only way MTL gets rid of Anderson is by a buy-out if he's still bad next year, or trade him to a team for another contract that may be longer but where a team are unable to keep the player plus sign some RFA they would like to keep long term..
Basu.. ish..

I don't think MTL will do a step back even for 2 2nd round picks. I think Hugues is more interested by selecting a player or trading the WIN pick with a player for something to help the team by either advancing in the draft or getting a forward to help the team.

While the trade is good in terms of savings for the Leafs and Habs that would improve to get Tavares, I fear that Tavares will not lift his no trade unless at TDL and if Toronto are not in the series. Other then that, he'll stay onboard and want to be part of the team if they have a chance for the cup.

Like Bergevin use to say “there are guys that get you to the playoffs and guys that get you through the playoffs”. Marner definitely isn’t getting any team through the playoffs. I wouldn’t trade Pezzetta for that hack</div></div>
I think you need to relax. Take a deep breath and tell yourself that these AGMs are only open discussions on ideas based on talks out there of a player being traded, then add the “What if..” aspect of it to the team we like.
I’m just looking at WHAT IF Marner is a target for Hugues for some reason. Not saying ge is, not saying Hugues and Gorton are salivating at the thought of this, it’s a WHAT IF…
Having a little fit about me wanting Marner in Mtl is off course and off topic. It’s a scenario of what would Mtl have IF this were to happen regardless of your views on a player, since we’re both behind little keyboards while actual scouts and GM look at players and see if they would fit within their team’s needs. So instead of having a fit, either you forget and move on or put something that has substance and tell yourself “While I would throw a hissy fit if they went for Marner, what is an actual deal that made as much sense as possible for both organizations if that deal went through, as I yell at my tv because I wouldn’t be happy!”

I agree that during the last season he was out of it, but he was one hell of a train during the push to the finals for the Habs. Sometimes players will exceed expectations when facing adversity by being traded out. I would hope that Anderson could be one of these guys for Toronto knowing he’s got guys like Nylander, Matthews up front that will have the pressure of scoring.

At this point I think Marner would waive his NMC to go to any team. Just to get out of Toronto and show he can be that player for a team.
As for the Anderson contract, Leafs would need a player that can go into corners and hit, while he wasn't great this year in points, he's still a bigger guys able to hit and move the puck. And if that doesn't pan out they have the ability to buy him out, or retain and trade.

Come one. He's a scorer in a team that is over inflated at the front line with guys that are all about their point total. He's got 80+ pts and would be one hell of an addition. Also, I imagine he'd want to wreck the Leafs when they play against one another.
If he came here and produce 80+pts with Suzuki and Caufield, the whole MTL fanbase would completely lose it.

Sending Marner Westward
Marner trade - I'd see that this could be an option for both teams; ANA gets a 80pts scorer, TOR gets a young potential player in Zegras and a good Defenseman.. Win win..
Tavares trade - I mean... PLD.. I don't know if Leafs fan would be happy about this.. It's the length of PLD's contract that bothers me for the Leafs to take on. Tavares' deal comes to an end, at TDL he may lift his NMC for a potential Cup contender IF Leafs aren't in again and Leafs would retain half his salary and would most likely get a prospect and a 1st late pick. But again.. Tavares will not waive if the Leafs are still in the race.
For the other two trades, pretty much good for both teams also. VGK get a few hundred K$ off their cap space, but I wonder if a good GM would hold off on any potential deal with VGK unless something comes back with the trade since they aren't even close to being in a bind here.. they have 20 player contracts and 800K$ left to spend including call ups.. They're about to lose Marchessault, Let them implode unless they give up their last remaining 2nd round picks for 25 & 26..

Lol imagine
Would not see Matheson being traded out at this point. He's a hometown guy that can be top 4 on a good series team (2nd line mostly). If our young group of guys can become what we hope they'll be, he'll be there when (if ever) Ghule and Reinbacher become our top 2. Matheson would most likely stay.
I think one of Barron, Kovacevic, Harris, Struble with the addition of Norlinder (to explore if a new town would jump start his career) could be more realistic for Habs to trade out. While some think these aren't good enough for Marner, and they may be right, Barron could potentially become a good top 4 if he can be coached to be more responsible defensively. He's got the offensive plays down, but the defensive side needs more development. Kovacevic is already playing good hockey with a bad team, so could be their 6th-7th guy. Harris and Struble are in development stages so they could could become something positive for the Leafs.
While they are not Top 4, teams don't win with only top 4 players anymore since the cap removed that possibility, but depth players like them who are whiling to hit and take a hit to move the puck become important to a series team. And from what we saw with the Leafs, that's what they need now.
I'd throw in there Dvorak (50% retention) or Armia (no retention) to help them get a center that can take face offs or a winger that can play 3rd line with offensive skills.
I would even switch that 3rd pick for a 2nd in 2025 to get something a bit better long term for the Leafs.

For the second it'll probably be traded in a similar move to Dach/Newhook, if not I'd take a look at Henry Mews, Beckett Sennecke, Ryder Ritchie, or even Cole Hutson. Masse would be a good pick there too. For the 2nd-3rd round picks I'd be shocked to see if Montreal doesnt take a long look at Aatos Koivu.</div></div>
I'm thinking that if Demidov is available, they'll take him before Lindstrom. but I'd be very surprised if he's still there at #5.
I do hope they have a go at #1, but in all reality, hope they still can get Lindstrom at the time of their pick.

Not that Dubas is some great person to put it bacck together. But the truth is, there is only so much a GM can do for this team. There are and were limited pieces to work with.
Truth is I think Dubas over time will become a better GM. I think the reality is, he was promoted way to quickly. Didn't learn what he needed to learn before getting there.
Because of that on some things he got took to school.
But I think he's improving. He's also not bad at valuating talent.
But above all I think he was brought in to change the organization. To modernize it. JR didn't really do that, and Hextal was incompetent. So they needed someone capable of doing that.</div></div>
Can't argue with that, but still think Darche would've done better long term. He'd have started with the blue line and build something solid in order for the front line to be able to go back on offense. I'm sure many think Karlsson's addition was great, but it's a blessing he didn't finish -20 or worse again.. He's able to put up points but he's damn good at turnovers and not being able to play defense.
Anyways, what do we know.. We're just chatting about it while they are living it.. Who's the fool? LOL!

My PERSONAL view would be he'd accept to lift for one of these teams either for contending rights, or geography + pressure, but in no particular order:
- EDM
- LAK
- VAN
- COL
- DAL
- NYR
- FLA

This doesn't mean that I'm suggesting these team would have a need for him, just saying those are the teams I think would be on his ok to trade list.

Same goes for Toronto taking Treliving.. Two GMs that can't build unless they have top 5 picks and will trade away the future for quick offense without thinking of what their team needs.

Marner deal that can work
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Antorche</b></div><div>We don't want marner..... he doesn't know how to win and thats not the player Kent Hughes target</div></div>
Maybe not for that price of giving up two 1st round picks (top 10 - says top 3 protected, but even then), but if they accept to flip Habs picks for WIN 1st, and CAL 1st add Barron to that mix and someone like either Anderson (no retention) or Armia (50% retention) or Dvorak (50% retention) and suddenly Toronto has an NHL ready Defenseman, plus a good project in Barron that can play but would need a bit more coaching on his defensive side, they also get an NHL ready forward with less cap hit and either a guy who needs to redeem himself and will play hard (Anderson), or two guys that want another contract so they'll play to win and are also good on the defensive side which Toronto badly needs.
Marner knows how to win, he knows how to score and play. Habs need a scorer badly, he responds to that need. He's still in the + and is able to pass the puck. So either him or Nylander, and I'd go for it.
You can't judge a player like that and say he doesn't know how to win.. His team has a bad defense, very bad and it's because their GM's have no vision and gambled most of the cap on four forwards instead of ensuring they have at least two top 4 defensemen to play with two top 3 forwards that can bring up other players around them.
You can bank on 3rd liners on the first line when you have Matthews, Nylander and Tavares there to put it in or pass it to you. But if you have no one to protect the goalie, it becomes a problem.

He can bounce back. His issues with Columbus and Winnipeg were very simple and the trade he wanted from them was to Mtl which both didn’t give him. When WIN didn’t discuss with the Habs, he had no choice and went to LA. So it’s his bad season.. it happens.
IF the LAK would trade with the Habs I think this trade is a win win for both. Anderson and Dvorak can be moved, and PLD finally gets his way and wear a HABS jersey.
Only Hugues and Gorton really know if they want to take that chance.. No one else, not you me or “BuckRodgers”. But this attempt isn’t a bad one for value.
