I disagree. I think teams would rather increase the number of picks they have because there is less certainty. I'm just making the point that DET has so much draft capital they should be willing to move up for higher quality prospects.

I guess I didn't think about them wanting to hold onto it to trade next year. It is probably more likely they trade their second this year for a third and fourth or something like that. They will still want to increase the number of picks without having to give up a roster player.

Who gets drafted 6OA
I don't think Byram falls below #4 with the AVs, and I don't think it'd make sense for them to trade that pick either. They could use a skilled d-man to bolster their core. Just take BPA when the time comes. I wouldn't worry about Byrum being "the guy."
The wings have so many picks this year and last (and will next year for that matter), so taking BPA on their boards makes a ton of sense because some of them are bound to hit. Take Dach or Cozens if they fall. Hey, maybe we even get lucky like last year and Podkolzin falls or something.

First Timer
With how well Larkin, AA, Hronek, Hirose, Bert, and Bowey have looked the last couple weeks, this could realistically be a playoff WC or 3rd seed atlantic team next year. But that begs the question of whether this core of players could end up competing for a stanley cup in 2-3 years afterwards. I personally think buying this offseason would be a mistake.
Byram would be a good pick if we fall to 5 or 6, but we also would be better off with a potential 30-40 goal scorer in Podkolzin or Kaako, so hopefully we are lucky in the lottery. Cholo, Byrum, DDK, Hronek, Bowey, Myers would be a solid d-core in 2-3 years, but again, I don't know if adding Skinner (who I think is overrated and not worth that much), fixes the forward core enough to give him that money for that term. We won't need to sign him for that contract if we get a 2nd or 3rd pick. The Myers signing would be great for our future on defense though, as long as we can move Daley and/or Big E like you suggested.

Would this team make playoffs next year
I mean they'd be fringe, but making it into the playoffs in a WC spot and then getting eliminated in the 1st round would be worse off for the rebuild than missing out and finishing bottom 10 with a chance for a top 5 pick. I'd like to see them sign a d-man in the offseason and try to dump one of their old ones, but other than that might as well stay and have one more losing year.

I'd like to see the wings sign a 2nd pairing d-man (Gardiner, Myers), as they have a lot of cap space and will need a bridge player for the next couple years. I'd like to see the Wings bury Ericsson and trade Daley for literally anything. Let the young guys in GR fight for that last 6-7 spot out of training camp.

Do the rebuild the right way. No reason to jump the gun. Also Karlsson doesn't want to be in Detroit and Point isn't attainable for the Wings, let alone any other team honestly.

They need to go out and sign a 2nd pairing d-man this summer because they are going to need a bridge in the rebuild after Daley, Green, and hopefully Ericsson are moved at the deadline, or even before. Other than that I don't think there's much going on other than the fact that Bowey is going to be riding the bench behind Hronek.

That's fair. I'm a wings fan and last year AA held out because he wanted more money and term, and he's a very comparable player in regards to value as both Johnsson and Kapanen. But then again, the Wings blow and I'd like to think that players would be more keen to sign 1 year bridge deals if it means they are competing for a cup rather than playing on a rebuilding team.

That allows the Maple Leafs to re-sign everyone else and leaves a left side defense of Rielly, Muzzin and Dermott -- hardly a weakness. The question will be how Dubas addresses the two open right-side defender slots (Liljegren should be ready for the bottom pair). I suggested Nick Jensen and Scott Mayfield, but unfortunately the Capitals shrewdly got to NJ first.</div></div>
Yea if that is the case, the Leafs will have to sign a lower end rh d-man in free agency. It's just that is such a big downgrade from having Zaitsev and Gardiner on the back end. And yes, I know both of them have flaws but you aren't going to sign someone that is as good as either of them. Would resigning Hainsey for another year at 2.5 mil be that bad a deal or do the Leafs really think he is retiring?

A leafs fan with a reasonable approach to fixing their cap situation?? Unbelievable!
Only problem with being that close to the cap is if someone gets hurt and you need a replacement during the season. Makes accomplishing trades very difficult. Would be a big help if Hainsey takes 2.5 or something like that but I don't know if that's realistic.
Also I am not a leafs fan so I don't know Kapanen and Johnsson's approach, but its possible that one of them holds out for more money, but you gotta think that this early in their careers they won't be asking for a lot of money as they will have realistic chances at competing for cups the next couple years.

How are you going to keep all of Kapanen, Johnsson, Brown, Marner, Gardiner, and Zaitsev with all the cap trouble you are in? Without moving Brown and Zaitsev, which the return will not be great for, you aren't signing Kap, Johsson, Gardiner, and Marner. And if you can't resign Gardiner, you aren't moving Zaitsev. And if you move Zaitsev, you have to resign Hainsey on another 1 year deal, and he's probably asking for similar money as he's making this year. It's cap hell and Toronto is going to have to make a sacrifice or two.
I'd like to point out that a 3rd for Zaitsev and Johnsson is ridiculously low, but the point still stands.

Karlsson and Dzingel will get significantly more money than that. You also cant' just dump Daley, Green, and Ericsson for high picks just because you don't like their contracts. At best you'd get a mid-high round pick for Daley and it would be hard to move Ericsson. Green isn't getting a 1st either.

Doesn't that mean he was asking for 9 mil to stay in Buffalo? If he doesn't like playing in Buffalo, he'll take less than that elsewhere. And personally, I wouldn't want to play in Buffalo. Losing culture, small market, ****ty weather. He might take less to go somewhere else.

Yea Gardiner gets at least 5 mil. Skinner will probably get 8.5 mil or so, but to be completely honest I think that's an overpay for him and smart teams will avoid that. History shows that players under perform after getting large contracts after career years. He would be dangerous on a line with McDavid though.

I actually went back and reread the deal for Karlsson and I have to say, it really isn't a terrible deal if San Jose reaches the cup final this year, and he resigns with Sj. But I agree, its really convoluted and is not good for OTT unless SJ makes it to the finals and Karlsson resigns with them. That could happen though....

My thoughts on Ottawa
As a Wings fan and outsider, I think they did a good job on going full rebuild/firesale at the deadline. I think it would have been a mistake to keep any of Duchene, Stone, or Dzingel. That being said they mismanaged that Duchene situation to an extreme. They banked on being able to resign Karlsson, and failed. I guess its a risk they thought they had to take at the time but damn. It handicapped them hard. Now they are looking at a rebuild that projects them to be competitive in 2023-24ish, as a conservative guess. If they had just sold that year, they could have just gone through a retooling and have been competitive in the next couple years after. Now they have to rely on draft picks panning out, rather than retooling and staying with a Stone, Chabot, Dzingel core.

I love that there were people screaming "wHy DoN'T ThEy TrAdE ERiCsOn" or abbie but NOBODY is taking on those guys with their contracts. So many fans of this franchise think its still 1997...</div></div>
I agree with this sentiment. It's valid to ask the question, "why did we give Abby 7 years at 4.25 mil when he is at best a 3rd line power power forward?", but to say that management can just snap their fingers and his contract be gone is much different. It's not the end of the world.
If there weren't teams offering a 2nd round, or 3rd and mid round pick for Howie, then there's no reason to move him. You don't give up your starting tender for the next 2-3 years for something like a 3rd round pick, or whatever teams were offering, especially when there isn't anyone ready in the system. Watching Bernier in goal this year shows me that he won't be able to make up for the youngster's mistakes on the ice like Howie does night in and night out, and losing 4-2 every night isn't going to develop the young players.

I know we would be getting Zaitsev, but it makes no sense to take on his contract. It has term and a big cap hit for a 3rd pairing guy with alleged attitude problems. Leaf fans have quoted on other AGMs that he just doesn't have a good, winning mentality and he doesn't really care about getting better. There's no way the wings take on that contract, which would just give cap relief to their biggest rival. The only way they move it is through a draft day deal imo, where they pair him with picks to move down in the draft or whatever need there may be.
