Re: “precedent”, forwards and defensemen are different animals. So, no, one is not a precedent for the other.
With that said, I’m sure there’s a price where Hughes prefers to go long term.
I just don’t envision Guhle’s agent agreeing to the number, because his client almost certainly gets paid more in total by taking a bridge now.
But Guhle is the client, so it’s his decision. Hughes was able to get Matheson to agree that 8 years was in his best interest, so maybe he can convince both Guhle and his agent?

Habs 2025 no trades with Celebrini
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs_22_14_20</b></div><div>IMO they should sign him long terms, 8 years deal around 6-6.5M ish. He is our best young defenseman right now and the only one who proved he can play in the NHL against other teams top line. Every other defenseman should signed bridge deals (Xhekaj/Barron this year) then Struble. Lane Hutson & David Reinbacher are the type of dman who could get long terms deal after their ELC
If we land Macklin Celebrini, we shouldn’t be signing Guentzel this offseason (and Crosby the next one)
Maintain the course</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Just_A_Guess</b></div><div>Idk I'm on the other side I guess. Lock him up for 8 years at 6-6.5 before the cap goes up and he asks for more later. 6/6.5 will look like a steal for Guhle come 2026/2027 imo and will age tremendously from there.</div></div>
He probably signs at that same cap hit you guys are suggesting on a long term deal after the bridge. There’s no rush. And it sets good precedent for everyone else. Team first.

Habs 2025 no trades with Celebrini
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Just_A_Guess</b></div><div>I'm hoping for an 8 year deal, 6-6.5 ish would be my guess.</div></div>
It’s possible, looking at his draft class, he’d definitely come in under the Sanderson 8 year cap hit.
The upside I see in a short term deal is it sets the standard (and ceiling) the rest of our young D.
An 8 year deal, with the correspondingly higher cap hit, could end up being inflationary for the cap hit of the bridge deals for the rest.
My guess is Hughes and Gorton take the bridge option, thinking about how it affects the rest of the team more than Guhle specifically.
Hughes did have his client Matheson sign an 8 year deal at a reasonable cap hit coming out of entry level.
But now he’s on the other side of the negotiating table, focused on team first, not player.
Peak earnings years are way earlier for forwards than for D.
Better to keep the cap hits for D low while he still can, while they’re still learning and developing.

Wait a year, he signs where he wants, and the acquiring team gives up zero in return.
Figure Dvorak fetches a 2nd at the TDL, so Beck, a 1st, 2nd, and 4th. For a player with a full NMC.
It’s more than enough. There’s a case to make it would cost less.
Sid drives the bus on their either way. Ownership won’t be able to say or do much if he decides he wants to move on.
Seemingly with bringing in Dubas, and then the Guentzel trade without Crosby consenting, they’ve already made their decision which way they’re headed.

-if kyle dubas even wanted to move a defenseman hed probably move erik karlsson, not the guy who has won 3 championships and played his entire career in pittsburgh
-jake guentzel is more than likely going to be under contract with a different team in a championship window.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>Crosby isn't taking a discount to play in MTL. I have my doubts he'll take a discount anywhere including PIT at this rate.
That Slafkovsky contract. I don't see it happening. Either from the player side or the team side.
If Slafkovsky thinks he's on the cusp of a breakout, he'll play next year to cash in on that.
As for as MTL, you don't sign guys after 1 year of production. That can go sideways so quickly. There is no need or hurry to resign him. If he stays where he's at right now next year, that same contract in place is a huge overpayment.
If that's what you are willing to pay this year, any increase from that cap hit that you might pay, is negligible and not worth the risk assessment.
In other words, he'd have to have a whole lot more production than 16 goals and 44 points to be worth almost 8 million as those numbers are 4-5 mil range given a RFA discount.
Odds of him being worth 8m from what he put up this year isn't worth the risk that he doesn't blow those numbers out the water and hence get a much smaller contract.
It's bad business to extend him at that rate.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caufield</b></div><div>TBF, the Burns comp is closer.

One point of note, Letang’s deal was front end loaded. It’d be $7.2mm retained, following a 2025 trade, (the point of this post) not $12mm.

Since this is a fantasy website for armchair GMs, I added Patrick Kane with the hypothesis that he wants to play for all 6 original six teams. I agree though, that might be a stretch. Stamkos reuniting with his mentor St-Louis is probably more likely.

My guess in that scenario is they’d work out a trade. And then a 1 year bridge ahead of a long term extension would make sense for both sides. Especially if that’s the roster and Habs are trying to win a cup.

That’s exactly the point, the pick would upgrade, because the Devils would get something in return for a trade.
The question basically becomes, would the rather have a 2nd and no 3rd (if they’re out of the playoffs) or two 3rds.
Honestly though, my guess is Jersey is a playoff team next year, and either Allen is the starter in Jersey, or he is traded to Calgary as part of the Markstrom deal, to be there starter over there, and he’s moved to a contender at the deadline as a depth option, in which case the Habs get the 2nd rounder that way.
We’ll see though, first of all he will need to stay healthy.

He has no connection to MTL other than growing up watching them and being a fan. He built his career and his name in Pittsburgh and idolized Mario who was the owner of the Penguins at the time (still own's a small portion of the team) and continues to follow in his footsteps in how he's carried himself around the sport of Hockey.
The Habs are also owned by a family, where as the Penguins are now owned by an entity. Family's will be less inclined to GIVE an outside individual ownership into something they own simply for publicity. (even if that person is Sidney Crosby) They are going to want that person to pay for ownership, not be given it for free. Where as an Entity like FSG would have less issue doing so. FSG could also offer much more to Crosby in the sports world in general as they continue building out their sports portfolio. He also loves Baseball, FSG can connect him to that world.
It's a fun dream you have though, it won't happen.</div></div>
Probably not. But maybe 😁
