Young Talent That Hughes Could Target
No shot NJ moves Mercer for a mid first and a 3rd.... I really don't think MTL and NJD are even the slightest match for trade partners.. Both teams are valuing young players, Devils probably a year or two older than MTL. Any price NJ would want for Holtz, Mercer, etc. is a nonstarter for MTL and vice versa. NJ values Mercer like you'd value Caufield and Holtz like MTL values probably Hutson.

Could something like this work
If NJ moves the '24 first its going to be for an elite goalie in their prime or somebody whos about to be there. They aren't moving it for old man Markstrom even with the late first coming back. The value of a potential star player far exceeds that of a regressing Markstrom and a potential middle 6 guy with the +/-30OA pick. The '25 pick could be on the table but that Vancouver pick makes it too much for just the '25..

Avs Devs
So from an NJ Standpoint, I'm fine with the shakeup of getting rid of Marino since we have too many RHD's and I do love Colton's play but I definitely value Marino higher. He's a legit top 4 shutdown dman who can provide a little offense here and there. Marino also goes through random stretches where he's dominant but not consistently enough to be considered a game breaker. Colton on the other hand is a 3rd line guy who provides grit with a pinch of offense. NJ doesn't really have a use for Manson since they're so deep at RHD and are really only seeking a shutdown LD that fits in the top 4 and I'd move Siegenthaler for that but it has to be a longterm viable replacement option or I'd just run with Siegenthaler again and hope his issues last year were just some mild struggles amidst the bigger team issues. That being said, Colorado adds if its just the Marino for Colton and I don't think Holtz is on the table unless its a top 6 version of Colton or a Legit 1A to elite goaltender. NJ would add it it was either of those.

bottom out
Jersey would never do that.. neither of the flames players have that kind of value and Markstrom is probably the worst fit of all the available goalies to the point where it likely wont happen

My assumption is that if we sign an enforcer, it will likely be Maroon who is already in the clubhouse unless he falls flat in the playoffs.
I assume that you are likely looking at a fringe prospect or late rounder for Lauko.</div></div>
No shot Hanafin is a 9mil defensman. He's a good top pair or no2, Hamilton is getting 9 and he's a much better player. 7-7.5 is probably about right

Some maneuvers for 2024
NJ is still extremely high on Mercer, Wallstedt would do it but Gustavsson isn't even in the ballpark. I'm sure you think the same vice versa but the belief and evidence still shows that Mercer will be a very effective Top 6 winger who does the hardwork of the line

That depends on if he's found innocent. (which he is until proven otherwise) If he is innocent, he will very likely be back in the NHL and hopefully he is because he was fantastic this season before this whole thing unfolded. It just likely won't be resolved before next season tbh, Canada's legal system is a mess and the case could take up to 2 years to complete unless it gets fast tracked, which it is so assume less but I doubt by next season

Lottery Miracle and Asset Value Breakdown
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>let's just think this through logically - you're asking boston to move an elite asset, and you're talking about adding B tier stuff. that doesn't work. Maybe if Boston was in full rebuild and were just trying to accumulate assets, but that's not the case. want an elite asset? give an elite asset. this isn't close. Wouldn't even the bruins front office having a meeting about it.</div></div>
That’s because Holtz is the A-level asset. Hes got top 6 scorer potential written all over him and has developed fantastic this year, if by some miracle NJ won the draft lottery, he just becomes an extra. You’re getting:
1 - A-level asset
2 - B-level assets
2 - C-level assets
In exchange for 1 A-level asset (who might not even resign a and has expressed discontent) in a position where you have excess strength, you get 5 assets (and potentially more) to fill out the rest of your roster and restock your completely empty prospect pool.

He was a late second rounder, so you're already bordering on third and he hasn't really grown his game in the 2 years since he was drafted so his value has dropped. 2 4ths is probably pretty close to his market price right now if he were on the market. I'd probably not move him if I were you at that price because the longshot of him breaking out and just running with the hand you have is probably a more appealing option than non-needle-moving picks.

Yeahhh, any offers they might've turned down are long gone now. Markstrom has significantly less value than he did at the trade deadline. He has 1 less year of contract control, He's now squarely in regression age, teams get 1 less playoff run, He hasn't been nearly as good as he was earlier in the season, and there will be a bunch more options (All of which are younger) in the offseason which will drop his value even further.

next year
Marner is better than Bratt but he's no so much better than Bratt that NJ would be willing to give up one of the best contracts in the league only to pay Marner 11+ million and handcuff their cap position and I hardly think that an additional 20ish pts is worth an additional 4-5 million AND giving up a top 10 Defenseman in the league

An optimistic next few months for the New Jersey Devils
NJ absolutely does not need and cannot afford Hanafin. They've got Hamilton who is far better than Hanafin, Luke Hughes will be the no1 on the left side, and they'll have Nemec for years to come on the right. They might even have Casey ready to jump in on the right side next year who is going to be a high end top 4 guy at minimum. I also think thats an overpay for Markstrom, 2025 first would be fine but Markstrom isn't the best goalie for this team and he's too old to pay a top 10 pick for, NJ just won't get the longterm value they need from markstrom to justify that price. I'd rather add to a '24 first for a longterm solution than get a rental retirement age goalie.
