One Year Left of Cap Hell
The only asset NJ is interested in from the Wild is Wallstedt and thats not happening without an obnoxious overpay so I just don't see anything happening between these two teams. For Reference, NJ's weak spots are Goalie, 3-RD, and 4-LW.
Goalie - Several years of team control with proven G below age 30 or a Star prospect who can make the jump this year or next.
3-RD - Big body Rental who can actually play defense with a lot of physicality and some PK skill.
4-LW - Big body checking guy who can skate pretty quick and put up 30ish points on the season with a >50 xG%.

Mercer
Devils have Nemec who's projected and developing better than Hutson, and they have Casey who's on the same offensive trajectory as Hutson but with more defense so Hutson really does nothing for them. Anderson is an overpaid 3rd liner and I have no clue who the other guy is. There's no reason for NJ to do this

Playoffs game 1
Devils aren't giving up a B+/A- level prospect for a rental top 4 Dman. Casey has a ton of value, not to mention the first that got tacked on. The value in this offer is for a Rental star player and is much closer to what NJ got for Taylor Hall right after he won the Hart trophy, A top 4 Dman is worth nowhere near that even with a bidding war

Neither side does this. NJ doesn’t need a no1 Dman with Hamilton already being paid for it, neither side wants to part with the assets necessary to make it happen, and NJ can’t afford his contract rn anyway. Revisit when he wants to leave as a UFA

Luke gets a defenseman who can play defense as a balanced partner, Zadorov/Bahl becomes the shutdown pair if this happens

If hes not resigning
Nylander is a great player but there is no reason for the Devils to get him if they can’t keep him. They’ll never be able to keep him under the cap. As it is today the team is going to struggle with the Luke Hughes, Dawson Mercer, and Simon Nemec extensions and they’ll likely need to move out both Palat and Hamilton to get it done when the time comes. The team is built to play together for a long time and Fitzgerald has repeatedly said he isn’t interested in rentals

He’s been mid for years, he can’t skate, has an average nhl shot, he’s never in the right places, and has average to below average AHL production.. at best he’s a 4th liner, at worst he’s a half decent career AHLer. Realistically Hes got a year of development left before he essentially plateaus but he’s never going to be a top 6 piece and every other piece of the roster is interchangeable

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Poogy</b></div><div>Throw in Nemec and another 1st round pick for a starting point</div></div>
Bahl's a top 4 shutdown dman and Timo is one of the best power forwards in the league, good for 40 goals and is top 10 in the league in analytics. On top of that you'd start the conversation with the 2nd or third best defensive prospect in the world who has been a pro since 16 and put up numbers in Liiga that nobody ever has and a first. No player has ever gotten a price like that and it's laughable

Yeah I'd have to agree with you there, I don't have faith in Ullmark. I'm relatively confident Ullmark is an average goalie who had an outastanding season on an outstanding team. Swayman would be a piece moving forward and solve a lot of problems.

Why not Kessel
I don't really have a problem with it but it takes the last spot for Holtz who will stagnate and devalue if he doesn't have a roster spot. For the sake of the future of the team it benefits them to have Holtz in the lineup unless he shows he just really can't play. That spot is his to lose for now.

Lines and stuff
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Devils don’t really have “lines” as they change so frequently.
I would like to see:
Meier - Hischier - Bratt
Haula - Hughes - Palat
Holtz - Mercer - Toffoli
Nosek - McLeod - Bastian
With Mercer and Haula (and Palat) rotating depending on situation. Like this…
Meier - Hischier - Bratt
<strong>Palat</strong> - Hughes - <strong>Mercer</strong>
Holtz - <strong>Haula</strong> - Toffoli
Nosek - McLeod - Bastian
Also, 3LW spot should be a competition…would like to see Clarke and Foote given every opportunity to win it.</div></div>
I agree for the most part but I don't see Nosek playing that much. He's more of an injury sub or a backup plan if the younger guys just really aren't ready. Foote and Clarke will likely be fighting over his spot.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dougford</b></div><div>You can roll your top 9</div></div>
Yeah I think they're going to want to roll the Top 9 pretty interchangeably (with small variations in TOI) and they'll let Mercer have his own line at least early on. That's how you build the most lethal team. If they're losing going into the third, you'll see Ruff shake up the roster and put Mercer into the top 6 but Its always best to spread the talent around and let your depth dominate.

What kind of package is Winnipeg looking for
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mynameisliang_</b></div><div>Jets fan here checking in:
The ask for Hellebuyck is simple, and per the Athletic, not even your best assets.
Simon Nemec is your 4th best prospect per Wheeler at the Athletic.
Connor Hellebuyck instantly makes you *the* Stanley Cup Favourite, and the assets returned in the deal should merit that consideration.
Right now, the Jets' roster is *significantly* better than last year's at this time, and last year's roster was 1st in the west in January. That the wheels fell off after that point has a lot to do with why Wheeler isnt with the team anymore, but basically from last year's opening day roster, we've replaced Dubois, Wheeler and a bunch of AHLers with Vilardi, Namestnikov, Niederreiter, Iafallo and Kupari. *On Paper* this is the deepest Jets roster I've seen in a long time, and should absolutely contend in the central.
So, with this in consideration, you're not actually trading for Hellebuyck, you're trading for several million dollars of playoff revenue guaranteed if we keep Hellebuyck. It's obvious that it would be better for the Jets Long-term to trade Hellebuyck, but people need to disabuse themselves of the concept that the Jets are somehow desperate to trade him.</div></div>
Nemec being the 4th best prospect on NJ doesn’t mean he’s up for grabs on the cheap. Hes one of the best defensive prospects in the league and would immediately be the best prospect on 80% of the teams in the league by a country mile. Hes absolutely not on the table for a pure rental and Ik you’re expecting the playoffs for Winnipeg and I’m not trying to be rude here but it’s very likely not happening. They’d have to beat out the flames and Vancouver for it and I just don’t see that happening. The Jets are very light on prospects and the future looks dark. Helle is not going to resign so yeah they kind of do need to trade him for what they can get and there’s not much of a market this year for selling goalies so a bidding war is unlikely.

There is zero chance NJ pays that kind of price. Holtz and Casey are both A prospects, a first, and a 1B goaltender is an insane price to pay for a pure rental.. if they really want him they can sign him as a UFA next offseason when he leaves Winnipeg for nothing
