Yes, I’m a Habs fan… but I also cheer for the Leafs! Imagine that!! Besides, I’m the original poster… just looking for hockey dialogue. If you’re interested, Bourque and Neely some of my fav Bruins. Currently, Bergeron. Always was curious what would’ve become of the Senators if they chose to invest in Chara over Redden? And if the Bruins would’ve ever become as competitive without Rask or Chara.

Fan of hockey first and foremost, then Habs, Leafs and Flyers - in that order. Favourite player currently is Price, started with Patrick Roy when I began watching hockey. Always wanted to see Leafs vs Habs in the playoffs, finally got to! Picked against the Habs in all four rounds and was very pleasantly surprised each time they won!! Was alive for their meetings in the 70s, but too young to remember/even watch.

If these moves went through, it would leave $4,798,551 for the Leafs to re-sign Sandin - rid the LHD roadblock; and sign additional cheap F depth or cheap RHD depth with the remainder for this year. As long as they secured Bishop for his LTIR status.

Realized this move put them below the floor, but by less than 21K… so they’d need to add a minimum league contract. Perhaps Leafs add Joey Anderson.

Flyers literally cannot do this
Also puts the Sabres back under the cap floor so I dont see them doing this either
Helps the Leafs, makes problems for the other 2 teams</div></div>
Not sure of Flyer’s LTIR situation, whether Couturier is on it? Thought they’d at least consider ridding themselves of Ellis’ term versus only 2yrs of Muzzin remaining.

Question on salary retention
Sorry… didn’t realize such info would be but a mere Google search away. Dry reading, but informative. Much like the conditions on the Monahan trade!

Question on salary retention
Does anybody know if there’s a limit to how many contracts a team can keep salary retention on? I know 50 percent is the max allowed on any dollar amount, unless involving a third team for further retention. But say a team has four or five UFAs this season, are teams allowed to retain on each and every player moved?

Cap relief
Would the value spike of either Pius Suter or Adam Erne, with further retention by the Habs offset the loss of the 2nd & 4th or surpass the return on Dadonov? I doubt the Habs would be able to recoup enough to make this trade worthwhile.

Cap relief
Habs aren’t looking to rid themselves of draft capital, nor are they in a real cap crunch with Monahan and Byron starting the year on IR, and Price expected to be on LTIR for the year. They’d rather be looking to acquire as much draft capital as possible. They do have some bad contracts however, that diminishes some of their player values - Hoffman and Gallagher come to mind first and foremost. Armia’s isn’t great, Dvorak’s contact has some value. UFAs Drouin, Dadonov, Byron, Monahan and Allen all hold better value at the trade deadline depending on their respective seasons. Anderson holds the most value, of any of their players they’d be considering moving at the moment. No point in adding draft picks for any retention at this point. They’ll likely be offering retention at the deadline to improve any returns in the trades they’re bound to make. Management is still stripping it down from the previous regime.

Leafs get depth and Top Pair Defensemen
Trying to make room, both under the cap and on their left side D, for Sandin is what I think the Leafs still need to accomplish this off season. I think that’s best accomplished by moving Muzzin, if they’re able? What’s more likely is moving Holl and/or Kerfoot, neither of which hold much trade value in the off season. They’d both be more valuable as trade deadline rentals, but the Leafs as contenders/buyers - haven’t sold at a deadline during this current window. Ideally, the Leafs would have a forward on a ELC push for time, thus adding additional forward depth/freedom to make additional moves. Those hopes rest on Robertson and perhaps Knies.

Leafs get depth and Top Pair Defensemen
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoxNix</b></div><div>Yes it's a homer trade. Nylander has skill and good size but is soft and lazy. Toronto improves their defense and gets retention on ALL THREE incoming players to fix their cap too. If Minnesota could afford Nylander they would have resigned Fiala earlier. The Predators are like everyone else, they don't want Kerfoot and Sandin either.</div></div>
Agree about resigning Fiala versus trading/affording Nylander, but disagree about fixing Leafs D? They’d be overloaded on the left side, just as they currently are. It would push Giordano to 4th on the left side, and Holl to 4th on the right side. Not good cap management if either of them are sitting regularly and are your depth defensemen. That’s what Benn and Mete were signed for, on the cheap. What truly ails the Leafs IMO is secondary scoring and forward depth. Removing Nylander & Kerfoot for Sissons only exacerbates that problem. I’d be targeting Fabbro, not Ekholm - but admittedly, Kerfoot, Sandin and a 2nd likely doesn’t get that done. (leaving out Minnesota and other incidentals entirely, including any retention)

Nylander plus for Ekholm and one season of Dumba, with retention - and you call this a homer trade? Leafs lose on draft capital, trade a season of Kerfoot for a season of Dumba (a win), but lose Nylander for the declining yrs of Ekholm? Nylander is the best asset in this trade, not to mention the loss of potential in Sandin. It’d be the Leafs with the hard pass! No thank you.

Wild still get Muzzin w50 retained by AZ
How much of a sweetener would the Wild require? Trade Dumba thru AZ and have them retain the 50%? More draft capital from the Leafs? With the cap penalties forthcoming for the two buy outs, their chances of retaining Dumba past this season are slim. Muzzin for a reduced cost for 2yrs might mitigate that. Holl, Muzzin, Kerfoot likely resembles the production of Dumba and Greenway for this year. How much value do you place on the next two yrs of service for Greenway; and how much more value is there in the trade market for Dumba versus Kerfoot/Holl this trade deadline, plus Muzzin at the next? That’s what the Leafs would likely have to make up to even discuss anything resembling this trade. Would Robertson to the Wild instead even get this discussion started?

What everyone thinks Dubois is worth
Just wait, be patient and sign him at no cost to your assets or prospect pool. Habs aren’t trying to contend anyway in the next two years. They’ve still got to sort out their cap mess left by Bergevin. For a team so close to the cap to be so far from playoff contention is bad management… best examples currently, San Jose and Philly, or even Vancouver.
