That was a lot of people's issues it appears, everyone wanted an NHL-ready guy, but the 'Hawks know they don't have much chance at a cup this year. This is definitely a draft that we won't be able to call it good or bad for a few more years.

Prospect Discussion
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockey44</b></div><div>Due to the fact that making an armchair gm team rn is kind of pointless, I'll be posting discussion forums similar to my last post. This forum is about the hawks prospect and drafting. For this post, I strongly recommend watching the hawks training camp video
Link Here: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-sQDqLr0mI" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-sQDqLr0mI</a>
1. Was Dach the right choice at #3 (strongly recommend watching the hawks preseason camp before making a decision)
2. Who was the hawks best steal of this year's draft?
3. What pick will the hawks have in the 2020 draft and who/ what position will they draft?
4. Is Brandon Hagel the real deal?
-He dominated in the camps this summer and was arguably the second-best player after Boqvist during camp.
5. Looking at the goalie situation, the Hawks brought in a bunch of undrafted/unsigned goalies from across the world for training camp. Some had very good seasons. Do you think any of the goalies could become the real deal?
6. Who will be the biggest impact player for Rockford this year?
7. Do the Hawks have any hidden gems in the system? If so who?
8. What does the hawks organization do differently that makes them so effective at developing players?
9. What hawks prospect are you most excited to see play this year? (Any league i.e WHL, AHL, NHL, etc)</div></div>
I numbered them to make it easier to jump around, and to respond:
1) Depends what they do to help develop him, a lot of the drafted players have high ceilings but lack current skill (i.e. Nylander, Saarela)
2) Alex Vlasic, at least so far. I can see him being the best defensive defenceman the 'Hawks have come Expansion Draft Time
3) Let's hope 31st, except I suspect they would've traded it if that's the case. I'm going to say early 20's and they're going to draft someone with potential, hopefully a Right Winger
4) Time will tell, lot of guys dominate in things like this and struggle playing with the best of the best (Sikura)
5) They need to give a couple a shot, I really like Gravel and Lankinen though, but the 'Hawks are scary good at finding goalies, let's hope they hide their secrets for awhile.
6) Versteeg, he's going to teach Dach how to use his body, and teach all those guys how to score.
7) Kurashev and Kubalik
8) They keep their AHL and NHL playing similar systems, and worry more about how a player could play, and not how their currently playing (Strome and Nylander)
9) Mitchell being one of the best NCAA players

Why not post this in the actual forums?
Anyhow, that's a lot of questions so I'm going to start with the steal of the draft: Alex Vlasic, at least so far he seems to have a high ceiling and if the 'Hawks can pull their normal magic I see him being the best defenceman the Blachawks have in a couple years.
I'm an Alexis Gravel fan, and think Lankinen has potential, but goalie is hard position to tell until you actually see how they do against your own players, I say they take a gamble and test a couple of them out.
Versteeg, on an AHL contract (though who knows, if he scores he might be signed pretty cheap, he just wants to play hockey) and I think he's going to teach those AHL guys how to put the puck in the back of the net and teach Dach how to actually use his body.

Post Training Camp
With a logjam happening at the forward position, it seems like Sikura, Nylander, Kubalik, Wedin, among others are all fighting for a couple spots. Anyone of them really light up at training camp? I know Kubalik didn't participate but has some eyes on him. Also, how does Saarela look, I hear a lot about him and am hopeful that maybe we'll have some brothers playing, but how far is he to being ready?

19-20 Projected Blackhawks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Not happening. Each line has to have a forward willing to play defense and that 2nd line doesn't; they will score a lot but give up a lot. For that reason, as several beat writers have pointed out, Shaw is a real possibility on the 2nd line.
Top line isn't going to consist of 2 rookie wingers...that's just bad management. Nylander also hasn't shown squat. The guy is going to be in the AHL unless he breaks out at training camp or the preseason but so far has shown nothing to indicate he's a top line winger...or 2nd line winger or should be in a NHL lineup. It's foolish to think that will change until proven so.
Kubalik is intriguing and could be lighting in a bottle but again, giving him top line minutes? I get he had a breakout tournament at the Worlds but that's not the NHL and he's never played on NA ice and of course in the NHL...give him 3rd line minutes and see how he does. I think he's going to be a better version of Kahun and because of that may very well end up being on the 1st line.
More likely lines;
Saad (Perlini/Sikura) - Toews - Kane
Cat - Strome - Shaw
Kubalik - Kampf - Perlini/Sikura (Saad)
Smith - Carpenter - Caggs
Everything I'm reading from the beat writers say Kampf will get the 3C if Dach doesn't make it and most think he won't.</div></div>
It's nice to finally have some flexibility again. It's already been announced that Kane will spend a lot of his time (at least at first) with Toews on the first line, with the left-winger open and possibly interchangable, although the stats don't like with Caggs playing there.
It 's just painful and hard to swallow having a third line that costs $10 million when the second line only costs under $3 million.

I think winger is a much more reasonable spot to see a veteran added, there isn't a clear winner for the 4th line, just a lot of guys who want to score goals, or Cagguila whose stats on the first line make it difficult to move him

This is more following Bowman's history of signing guys WAY past their prime, basically give a guy like Kubalik and Nylander a few extra months. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see Sikura on this roster day 1, he's flashed so much potential, once he hits the back of the net once, he could light it up for double digit goals, maybe even hit 50+ points playing with Toews and Kane

There's A LOT of old players sitting without contracts, Vanek is another. There's a couple who just enjoy the game. They also know they'd have a good chance to come back for playoffs if they're headed in the right direction or be picked up by a playoff caliber team.

Not at all, more reasonable than most of what I've seen... Only reason I put Perlini on the 2nd is he did well when put with Strome and deBrincat last year, although I could probably get plenty of assists on a line with them too
And <a href="/users/exo2769" target="_blank">@exo2769</a>, Caggiula did very well with them last year, I do expect them to switch between those options, especially based on if they need more offense or defense. Expect Kubalik when Toews is in a rutt scoring, and Caggiula when the other lines can deliver scores.

2019-20 Opening Week Roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HatterTParty</b></div><div>Why like a 12th pick though? Why shouldn’t he play like the 3rd pick he is? By that logic, I’m trading seabrook with Dach and saying thanks for a weekend of press in Chicago. Maatta was a bad trade, Dach has almost no expectation from hawks fans cuz we didn’t want him, de Haan is good, nylander was freakin awful, and AA was a necessary trade. So, no, I don’t feel too happy about this off-season as a whole. I’m glad others are optimistic, but Dach better play like a 3rd overall pick, cuz this puck is gonna be talked about for a long time.</div></div>
Because we were supposed to have the 12th pick and won the lottery. I'm not sure if he's quite as good as Byram or Turcotte but again, the 'Hawks were looking for size, they tried trading down and no tteam (esp Vancouver) would take the trade. Maatta was a good trade, we pretty much got him free, Nylander we haven't seen other than playing for an awful team. He may end up being a bust but it's better than holding onto Joki knowing he'd never see another day in the professional league. Add that to acquiring Lehner, Kubalik, Wedin, and Saarelski... I've been against Bowman for awhile but look at last years roster vs today's, in one off-season he built a competitive team AND a legit farm system

2019-20 Opening Week Roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HatterTParty</b></div><div>I have always taken pride in respecting people’s opinions. I especially do this when debating a person with a complete opposite opinion.
Having said that, I will ask you the same thing that no one has been able to do for me yet: sell me on Dach. You mentioned in your statement that the hawks didn’t need more scoring or defense, but needed to replace hossa. So where does Dach fit into that logic? He isnt the skater hossa was at his best, all he is is scoring potential (albeit ill be shocked if he ever gets over 70 points), and it’s been established his defensive game has more holes than his inability to use his size to a premium. At least turcotte played two way hockey, had speed, and could score like crazy. Dach’s only selling point is a big body (that he can’t use) and he’s more developed at present (which is gonna be hilarious if they think he’s ready for the nhl).
Like I said, I very much respect your opinion. And I really do want people to sell me on Dach, cuz it hasn’t happened yet. The problem I have is that everything going into this off-season seemed to have a direction. Then maatta happened and everything (save for the de Haan trade) started coming off the rails. I have no idea what this team is anymore and it worries me as a fan. I really hope Dach is not the future 1C because he doesn’t not look even close to one, even potential wise. But hey, I’d love to be wrong. I’m still backing a seabs plus Dach trade to offload seabs’ contract.</div></div>
My hope for Dach is similar to Strome, he has raw athleticism and potential. Bryam and Turcotte are better players now, but Dach definitely has the highest ceiling. For me, I just need to see that Dach is at minimum a 12th pick and I'm okay (because anything higher is technically a win). deHaan was a great trade, Anismov that just happened was a necesssary and average trade. Which really leaves Maatta, who we traded an int'l signed guy for. Then Lehner who is a #1 goalie... I don't see why everyone thinks this has been an awful off-season.

Dach would suffer, Stan would be fired, and maybe we have a chance for a good lotto pick again, only this time we pick the actual best available like one should at number 3.</div></div>
I still don't know why everyone hates this pick. Like we needed more scoring or another young defenceman. This team needs to replace Hossa (and eventually Toews), it has it's new Kane in DeBrincat and it's defense in Boqvist, Beaudin, Murphy, and Mitchell (plus Vlasic has potential some day). Dach may not have been the best player available, but he was the best player for what was needed.

They've had a fantastic off-season, yeah they got rid of Joki for who knows what in Nylander, but they've wanted Nylander for a few seasons and needed to get rid of Joki. Other than that, Carpenter was a silent acquisition, de Haan and Maatta both are young and have a lot of upside, Shaw came cheap... then you have some of the best int'l signings in the league, and built back a farm system that was almost dead a few years ago. They put themselves in a situation where the next 2-3 years they can tank or push for a cup based on how things go and how the young players do.
