If Holl gets into the 1 mil range, it will be for the max bury able amount (not that I think he will be buried). Doobie has been good on depth contracts and with Holl's limited time I really think he will be under a mil. Maybe not but with his age and 40 games experience I cannot fathom him commanding more.</div></div>

Babcock buried Holl and he’s now showing he’s a legit top 4 defenseman in his prime years. He’s big, physical, a RD and can skate. As Leaf fans we tend to over value our stars and undervalue steady, reliable less flashy players. Holl is an example of this. His next contract will be his best chance for a payday because of his age and he will get and deserve a hefty raise. Call me crazy, but I like Holl better at $2.5M than Reilly at $7-8M which is what he’ll command on his next contract.

Thread: Is it time
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blowing_the_zone</b></div><div>I don't know, Jensen played like 22 mins last nigth and came out a plus 1, for what that's worth. I like Oz (Mar Mar not so much) but he;s like 14 mins a night, no pk and pp time. I think he looks good with Dermott and I think he can grow into a really good 5/6 d. But I could see a play for Jensen, who does alot of Pking, throw him out with Mo and push Hainsey down with Dert. That lands Oz in the press box and gives us good d depth for the playoffs with Bab's trusting OZ to fill in for injuries if needed. Its easy to tell he doesn't trust Holl. Plus Jensen is a super cheap cap hit, wouldn't cost much in a trade and he could walk as a UFA if it didn't work out.

I'm on the fence with the Goat. He can look slow as molasses and can have hands of stone, but he does remind me a bit of Boyle in that they're both huge and Boyle didn't even get a regular shift until he was like 25yrs old. My expecations for the Goat have always been tempered but he could be a diamond in the rough.

I hear ya on the 4th line lack of love. Somepne posted a signing of Rick Nash the other day. If he is healthy that could be a neat Mike Fisher kinda signing for the playoffs and give us a 4th line of Nash, Goat, Brown, and leave us with a press box of Lindholm, Ennis and Oz if we got Jensen. That's good depth for the playoffs and Babs trusts all of them.

I also hear ya on the potential need for toughness. I think this aspect gets poo pooed to often, and maybe from folks who've never played the game at a high level. I know from my pathertic career in competitive hockey that when there is a guy like a Tom Wilson running amok against your team, he can take your team off its game and it helps to have someone who can set him straight. I love kadri, but I don't think its fair to give him that assignment.</div></div>

Agreed. Here are my trades to address the toughness issue prior to the trade deadline. I may be a little light on what we give up but I think it addresses the issue. <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/edit/944150">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/edit/944150</a>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>You are totally right we need to add cap inflation to these numbers, notice how most are in the 6's? There is a method to my madness of giving him 7.5 million. Kucherov signed as a UFA, his numbers are almost entirely irrelevant. I must say, I love your enthusiasm, but most players take a step forwards, not 3 or 4 or 5, like you are suggesting. When projecting numbers for an improving player with a track record, you don't say "They will get 25 more points! Let us pay them based on that "reasonable" assumption!" You project based on normal progression due to the difficulty of the league (10 extra points is ******* huge man), and that leads you to this conclusion:
Nylander: 6.5
Marner: 7.5 (Nylander plus 1 million, because they are similar, then be prepared to factor in a possible JT factor and you get 8)
Matthews: 11 (matching with the JT contract, and being Eichel's contract with inflation. Remember, Matthews is an RFA, while JT is a UFA (RFA is significantly cheaper). The numbers actually show them as being very comparable.</div></div>

Kucherov signed his deal this year as an RFA not a UFA and it doesn’t kick in until next season so is a good comparable. Adding 5 goals to Matthews pace from last year is not a huge step and neither is Marner getting 80 points. Those are very reasonable assumptions. We disagree on the relative merit of M&amp;M and their comparables in the marketplace and in my opinion it is unlikely unless both players are willing to take a home team discount which is very dangerous to assume.
