It's a slightly risky deal on both sides.

For the rangers: the vlasic contract may be a great one that gives them a 23-25 minute shut down Dman who also can put up 30-40 pts playing PK, PP, and EV against the opponent's top lines. Hes dont it for a decade, and is only 31 (not young, but not old either). Hes on a down year, but he is a top Dman. The term and $$ are a bit risky, but they could give them a #1 Dman. Labanc could also stay a medium 3rd liner, or with better linemates, increased ice time and opportunity, he could explode for 60-80 pts and be a young core piece. Merkeoy could be a #1 Dman in the NHL or a total bust and Blichfeld could be a top 6 Forward in the NHL or a bust because despite being the CHL leading scorer, he is an overager, so it's hard to tell. Melker is a known commodity 3/4th liner, but a great PK player, but not a huge deal, and a 2nd rounder is a crap shoot too with a 1/3 of a chance of being an effective NHLer.

Lots of Risk for NYR, but clearly a good heul in comparison with losing Hayes and Kreider for next to nothing.

For the sharks, it's also a big risk. They give up their #1 shut down dman for decade, and a member of team canada olympic team as well as a heart and soul type player. They lose their top D prospect and only 1st round pick still in the system not on the NHL roster. They lose a very good young NHL forward and they lose the CHL leading scorer (a potential star forward), and another top pick.

And this could all be for two rentals and one year of Kreider. That's a big price to pay both today and in the future for two guys who may not fit in and may not stick around beyond this year (or next).

It's a significant risk for both sides, but it matches the needs of both too. The sharks could use one or two top forwards this year going into the POs, and guys who might resign if the situation works as it has for Jumbo, Burns, Kane, and possibly Karlsson. The Rangers et two very good defensive players in Vlasic and Melker Karlsson, a top 9 forward to replace the two they lost, two great prospects and a high pick.

Its a clear win-win, with big risk on both sides, but also big upside for both as well....

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aspina25</b></div><div>Just to get this out of the way: I think there's basically zero chance that the blues move on from either of them and an even smaller chance that the Rangers would make an offer.

That being said, I completely see where you're coming from with not wanting Shattenkirk back. He's not doing too hot and he'd make the team older. The only problem is that in order for the rangers to make any significant move, they've gotta include one of the 3 expensive defenseman (Shattenkirk, Staal and Smith) and Shattenkirk is both the best and youngest of the group.

The blues could probably get more for them separately, but I don't necessarily think this is a massive underpay.

At this point I'm pretty sure everyone is along the same track of Kravtsov&gt;Chytil&gt;Andersson but that doesn't mean that Andersson isn't still a very good prospect. I understand why the blues would try to target them, but a team rarely trades it's very best prospects in a deal (even for someone elite) and I don't think the rangers would consider parting with their top 2.

I'm honestly pretty surprised by your opinions on Buch. I personally think he's got a better future ahead of him than Chytil, but he just doesn't like the spotlight of New York.

I understand the not caring for DeAngelo, he doesn't have much value, but he can serve as a decent 7th defenseman in a pinch.

I know you didn't mention him above, but Nils is also a really good defensive prospect. I feel like he doesn't exactly get seen as that due to him being the Rangers third pick last year, but he was still a 1st rounder and is more than holding his own in a men's league.

All in all, I don't see the Rangers and blues being trade partners at any level, but I was bored and got curious as to what it would take ?</div></div>

No harm in making a curious post, it's pretty much what this site is for. I've thought about what the Rangers would look like if they sped up the rebuild... would be cool to see if they got Panarin and then traded for Tarasenko. Would still need to shore up the defense IMO (not sold on Skjei being /the guy/ back there), but going for it one last time before Hank hangs them up would be pretty awesome to see.

I do think Nils is a good prospect. Rangers did really well in the first round last year.

"Spooner is not good. He was given every opportunity in Boston. He Cannot play center. He is terrible defensively and even worse at faceoffs. He is a 3rd line winger. Boston had a pretty good team last year where he could have been a 3rd line mismatch, but couldn't solidify that. He looks like he should be good, but he's just another guy."

This all sounds good, with some awesome qualifiers like "terrible" and "even worse", but the statistics would say otherwise:
Spooner in 39 games with Boston: 9g 16a = 39pts (.64 ppg) and was a +10. Fleshed out to 82 games, that's 52 points for the year...That's not a 3rd line mismatch winger on the proper roster??? Just because the media in Boston hated the guy, doesn't make it true. I know it's hard sometimes, I have to turn the volume down on the Ranger games to block out Sam Rosen's over the moon comments myself.

"Hayes - Ok, so here is where I have some problems with assessments, not just yours. Krejci takes a ton of heat for not being good anymore, but he has consistently out performed not only Hayes, but also Zibenajad.
Krejci - 218GP 57G 104A 161PTS
Zibenajad 209GP 62G 73A 135PTS
Hayes 231GP 56G 73A 129PTS "

Again, this is a media thing. Krejci gets a ton of heat, not for being a bad player...but because of his contract!

He's 32 years old, with a 7.25m cap hit, producing 50 points a season, and has 3 years left on said deal with a NMC!! Just taking a quick scan of contracts, he's the 16th highest paid center in the league...but he's the 70th highest center in points. Before you point to how many games he played, that number only improves to 48th in ppg. just a tad lower than 16th I'd say.

The Rangers moved on from Derek Stepan for this very reason, because they didn't feel the 6.5m NTC was equal to his production....and he's 4 years younger than Krejci, is arguably more consistent, and makes 750k less! I'd be pissed too if I were Boston fans!

Now...cherry picking years out of Krejci's career to say he has outproduced Hayes &amp; Zibanejad tells a very small part of the story here. What are all three players ages again??? (answer, 32, 26 &amp; 25 respectively). And who's most likely to be on the upswing between the three of them, not just for this upcoming season...but for the foreseeable future? I think it's safe to say Krejci would not be your first answer...even setting aside their respective teams quality. Either way, you can't deny one player is on his way out of his prime, while the other two are just entering theirs. Let's wait 4 seasons, and cherry pick stats then and see how it turns out.

"Hayes has never hit 50pts, Entering his 5th season with diminished talent around him, I see no reason why he get their now. He's a decent player, but nothing special."

First, I didn't say he was special, I said he was a decent 2C (which you seem to have admitted to lol), and would be a killer 3C for a contender. Second, I kind of highlighted the reasons he should continue to improve this season above, which make all the sense in the world (without even bringing up the fact that he is now entering his prime as a player)...but OK, I can't expect you to know details about the Rangers, I guess we can wait and see how that turns out.

Moral of the story, don't let your home town media coverage fool you, I thought you would have learned that from the Seguin ordeal :tearsofjoy
