As for the money , I think the Avs do their best to trade Erik Johnson and JT Compher this offseason to replace them with cheaper option . They should be able to save about 4.5 M between the 2 of them which should cover the increase in salary of Kadri and Kuemper. I think the player they lose in Nichushkin for sure. He's due for a pretty big increase himself .</div></div>
You are right that someone is in for a rude awakening on Kadri but its gonna happen.
JTC is traded IMO and EJ gets a buyout. I think they are resigning Nuke. I could see a $5x5.... Would like to see them nudge it down on AAV and get 6 years (for example)

Kadri is gone no matter what. He's gonna get probably $8M range I think and Avs cant do anywhere near that.

A lot of money comes off the books in time for MacKInnon's 12 million!</div></div>
Nuke >> Jost. Jost tops is about 3 x $2M. I could easily see him getting 2 x 1.875M
I am not a fan of keeping Jost around for anything in the top 9 unless he plays W. Today he is a 4C max but has limitations in the FO dot. If he could improve there, then that really opens doors for his future.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangle</b></div><div>nah that's just a stacked team. bednar's system allows for more cross ice passes and breakaways, i mean just look at the knights series. bednar's game is all about transition and is comfortable trading chances.</div></div>
That is partially true. But looking strictly at the Vegas series is not a way to get a good idea of what the Avs want to do. Vegas was trying to play their game as well and at times dominated. There is a reason that Vegas was effectively tied for the presidents trophy.
When the Avs are imposing their style, they are not trading chances. In addition to fewest SOG against, they were #2 in SOG for. Most games through out the season were mid to upper 30s SOG while the other team often could barely muster low 20s. They are very much a puck possession team with a strong transition D that activate often.

That is just nonsense. The Avs allowed the fewest shots per game against this year, almost 2 shots per game less than the 2nd place team (Boston). Not sure how much goalie friendly you can get

Goalie B. 29 gs, 18 wins 10 loses, .920 sv%, 2.31 gaa, 2 so
Those are career playoff stats for the record.</div></div>
That's why you dont look only a stats. Gibson is a G that can steal a series. Top 5 G in the league IMO. Grubi is good but more of a top 15 G that performed well in Bednar's system.

Imo Newhook has ppg potential and is 2 more years on an elc and along with MacK, Mikko, Makar, Byram, Girard and Landy is the core to build around for the next 5 years.</div></div>
Its really Newhook for Gibson with this being close to even salary swap vs Grubauer and what he gets being a Vezina finalist. Compher is nothing to build around and the 28th pick in a weak draft should have been traded at the deadline for something. I want to see Newhook develop too, but Gibson wont come for nothing. I would put someone else but the Ducks arent giving him away for free.

Don’t get me wrong I love Donskoi, but his last season with us was kind of miserable. Most fans like him, but I think he’s a much better fit in Colorado. At the moment I would be much more intrigued by someone like Jost or Nichushkin.</div></div>
I let Jost walk in this scenario. He could be of value to someone but I dont think he is what the Avs need. Nichushkin is a lot like Alex Tuch, without the finishing ability.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RawZuccSauce420</b></div><div>Sort of but I disagree to an extent. Hertl will get more money than Kadri because he’s a much better player and would definitely re-sign with us if not traded. Hertl can function as a legit 1C, I don’t see Kadri doing the same. So Hertl’s value is reasonably higher than Kadri’s (AKA more than Kaut and a 5th). That’s even more true after how Kadri played/screwed the Avs in the playoffs this year.
To add on, the Sharks would never trade Hertl in a lateral move. The only reason we’d trade him is under the assumption that we’re rebuilding. And in that case we’d want a 1st rounder and good prospects back instead of older roster players.</div></div>
That is a pretty fair take. No disagreement that Hertl's value is higher than Kadri. If the deal could happen, from the Avs side, I think Kadri has to be included and then its a question of what else is needed to make it happen.
What is your take on Donskoi? Was he well liked there or happy to not see him come back?

i dont think the avs can keep hertl. cant keep everyone. if hertl stays someone has to go. he'd be only a rental for the avs so no need to pay anymore than rental prices.</div></div>
If Grubi gets that, I hope its not from the Avs. Bennington got that after winning the cup. A deeper run this year could have gotten Grubi similar money but I think it dropped him down a notch.
Dont get me wrong, I wouldnt be hugely disappointed with keeping him. This is a scenario I built on the idea that G needs upgrading which is not a slam dunk idea. But if that is what Joe thinks is needed, I think Gibson is the most logical way to do it. And I have disagree with you - Gibson is a significantly better G.
Other scenarios I made today kept Grubi and toyed elsewhere in the forward core. just having some fun today after a disappointing series.

Career year does increase his value. So perhaps the timing is off. But I have seen him for years in LA and looking at the balance of what he has been which is a 3rd line role player. He isnt an elite talent. This trade treats him as such.

Its a swap of 2Cs with some sweateners. The 5th could be improved upon.
SJ is stuck with some terrible contracts and Kadri's is a little more manageable and the resign (if desired) should be less than what Hertl's new contract will be

Grubi is going to want something like 5x5.5 or so. $900K more to get a top 5 G with length on his contract already is very attractive.
They certainly can resign Hertl. I dont think he is due for a huge raise as he hasnt really continued his growth. He will get some but I think it can be manageable.

Ah I see. I would disagree that Grubauer and Gibson is as close to a wash as you suggest. Gibson is a top 5 G IMO. Compher is not panning out so really he is a salary dump in my mind and getting a fresh start somewhere else. That first is a late one in a terrible draft year. Sure, you dont want to give up Newhook for nothing but I think the org depth is deeper than it ever has been. This scenario has a 1-2-3 C depth that would match up just about any night and it locked for several years. Combine that with Gibson's 6 remaining years and this is probably as aggressive of a cup window run as could reasonably be made.
I think the Avs lost because there is not a 2nd line that scares you, granted Kadri didnt play. But swapping him for Hertl (and resigning) should be a much more intimidating 2nd line. Then a true 3C that is very strong defensively and win a FO.

Dont need Gibson? They have to get a G now. Its either sign Grubauer or go get someone equivalent or better. This is better, obviously.
If you trade Newhook, the need for a long term 2C is wide open. Hertl would need to be resigned in this scenario but the simulator doesnt do that.
