Chicago is selling cap space and now Florida could end up with a good player just by taking salary to make a deal happen. Cap space could be more valuable than draft picks right now. All veteran players going to a contender will need salary retained somewhere .

Who looks good in Buffalo? Staal can fill in the middle and help the PP. Toronto was trading a second pick for a depth centremen every year until old Spezza got there.

Lou knows what he is getting This looks like a buyers market. Sent two AHLers back and one is a UFA. Remember everybody knows Lou needs players now with his captain out. I was surprised Buffalo couldn't get at least a 2nd and 4th from Montreal. Bergavain spent a lot of money this year and had 2 2nd round picks and 9 picks in the middle 3 rounds. Was interest in Staal that low??

You bring in the big guys via trades in FA. You don't waste a first round pick because someone has "grit".</div></div>
What do you give Dumdaz for this draft. I rate it a B at best. Look at Steve Y or Dorion. After the top 5 picks you look at their mix of picks and I think they got the A.

TML draft class since Dubarelli in charge
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Daryl</b></div><div>You don't draft gritty players. Look at the Lightning. They drafted strictly by talent and then through free agency and trades brought in bigger and more rough players (Maroon, Goodrow, Bogosian, etc). Biggest story of the playoffs is how stupid every GM was for passing on Brayden Point at the draft. The NHL isn't about big zero-talent players that can hit; its about fast, high IQ, and skillful players that can produce. Always draft on talent, then bring in the bottom six plugs in free agency to beat up the other teams stars.</div></div>
If everybody drafts on talent then where do the guys you trade for, to so call finish the job, come from.

What does everyone think of the Draft
At first look you notice there are only 2 out of 12 over 6 feet (both 6 foot 1) and only 1 weighing in over 176 and he is a 5 foot 10 guy at 200. Only 2 from CHL and 3 from states. Then we have 4 fins and 3 russians none of which play in north america. I do like the russian goalies numbers and I do consider the fins among the toughest of europeans but there are clearly other choices out there. Getting harder to play against will have to come through free agency because Dumdaz trades away gritty guys like Kadri and Kapanen. Dont dare mention Clifford because he never got close to playing 10 mins a night. Kadri and Kapanen played over 15 min a night. If we need Clifford then why did we get rid of Martin? Dumbaz cant help himself getting all these bargain little guys. I would have went along with trading up some picks and getting a couple WHL or OHL d men. Dumbaz needs to fire up his harry potter wand and do some magic this year or he is done.

What Is Wrong With Mitch Marner
Anyone else remember when Chara had Marner pinned to the boards and he got drilled while he was vulnerable by a 4th liner? Kadri should of been a leaf for life after that day. Marner was a big Martin fan too. Malgin Petan brought in. Checkers like Moore Timashov and Marchement out. I get that Clifford is great but Kadri brought an edge for 15 to 20 plus minutes a night. Nylander had a great year but he plays a soft game. Nylander and Kadri are both real good but totally different players. It isn't just about skill versus grit. Team chemistry is not as simple as one plus one. If skill alone won hockey games then why are the leafs with their top tier goal scoring and goaltending a bubble team?

July 1 Free Agency
From a players point of view sitting out for a period of time and then starting right back up is not as easy as some might think. Do it on poor ice with lots of pressure and uncertainty and it will just adds to it. If training by yourself was so easy then why all the big training camps and pre season games Last time I checked a contract would still expire and have to at least be extended and signed off on.

Do you think this team can win the Stanley Cup as currently construed?
The cost of correcting the McElhinny mistake ie Campbell trade added to the Kadri trade not panning out equalled to a lost year. Although Barrie has been better lately with the added ice time it doesn't make up for the fact that Kerfoot couldn't tie Kadri skates. Honestly I never thought the logjam on the forward left side would change so much so fast. Marleau traded then Hyman hurt Mickey hurt Johnson hurt and Timashov lost on waivers have definitely not helped. To say we missed Brownie would be an understatement as moving Kapanen up and down the line up and on the left side almost cost him this year in development. Brownie made it look so easy. Shockingly one wonders how we could have made it this far without Spezza shoring up the bottom six. We all know the defensive woes all too well. Dermott injury scewing up half his season. Ceci Barrie absence in thier own ends. But the cost of fixing cap issues and past decisions left the cupboard too bare to get that one difference maker on the back end.No offense to muzz . He cant play 60 min a game.

LEAFS DEFENCE PROVING WORTH
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLSage</b></div><div>I actually think Dermott can be a real game changer for the Leafs if he can step up and show that he too can be a really good shut down defenceman for the rest of the season with the injuries to Rielly, Muzzen and Ceci. This is his time to shine for the Leafs and if he can, it will really change everything on how Dubas views the team's defence and any moves the Leafs make in the offseason.</div></div>
I like Dermott. A lot. For the playoffs asking him to being in the top 4 right now is too much. He also cannot play with Ceci on the third pairing either. Ceci and Dermott at this time cannot carry a pairing. Basiclly they both need someone to play with. Dermott should be better next year while Ceci looks at his ceiling now. This is why I cannot figure out why they did not trade Ceci 5th 6th 7th for Hainsey. He could of helped out while people got healthy and then dropped back to the third paring with dermott .
