This is how you manage the salary cap

I'm on here just shooting ****, but I kinda have to ask why Detroit wouldn't be willing to pay a bit extra to receive the more established players.
Puljujarvi is at the very least equal in terms of upside as Zadina. And the way Detroit's roster is set after what they did this summer, it's tough to see a path for Zadina being much more than a third line option for them there long-term.
Yes his whole career is ahead of him, but the roadblocks are right there in Detroit. Good chance that leads to a disgruntled player.
I'm not sure the 2nd does the deed, but that trade definitely makes Detroit a better team. All it does for Edmonton is give them cap flexibility.

Your sim assumes Edmonton gets Haula and Eakin for free and assumes that teams are willing to pay something for players like Manning and Russell. It's not realistic.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Miller is a 3rd pairing guy. He can't defend top-6 forwards nearly as well as Russell (and probably not as good as Lagesson either), so you really haven't improved the defense at all.
Re: Brown, anybody Toronto moves this summer will be for cap purposes, so you're better off sending a 4th to Toronto and trading Benning (if you must) elsewhere for a 2nd or 3rd.</div></div>
Miller is a 20 minute a night guy capable of QBing a PP unit. He isn't there to defend, he's there to provide offensive support. I could do without and find a cheaper option, but at a cheap acquisition cost, he's a potential 40 point defenseman.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorsCousin</b></div><div>"opportunity". It's good to have Benning as a backup in case Bear/Bouchard falter. We can send them down when they start to play bad and still have a guy to hold that spot.</div></div>
The Oilers don't have the available cap this summer to afford a $2m backup. They need to address the forward depth and his salary makes sense to use towards that. Especially when other teams likely covet him.
This trade was even rumored at the deadline. I'd be surprised if a version of it didn't happen this summer, especially when Dermott is out until November.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorsCousin</b></div><div>Wouldn't do the Brown trade. You've got Kassian, Puljujarvi, Gagner and resign Chiasson for no assets for your RW. For LW you got Draisaitl, Lucic, Gambardella or Khaira or Cave, and can sign a guy like Tanev for no assets. Defence would like with Benning as the 3RD.</div></div>
Benning blocks the rookies next season who need an opportunity to play. Jones, Bear and Lagesson all lose the waiver exemption status in 2020. Benning will get traded.

Let the rage flow through you
If anything, this shows you how much of a task the Leafs have this summer getting under the cap, which is likely lower than the $83m you used.
You've cleared about $8m and this team is still well over the cap despite having two rookie D on their starting roster.

I think Chiasson signs that low or he looks for work elsewhere.
In all honesty, I hope Puljujarvi goes home for a year so we have his salary available to pay for an upgrade in the top six.
That Lucic deal is interesting though.

Why can’t these be the lines
Because that setup provides the Oilers with literally zero scoring depth beyond the first line. Strome is a decent third line center. He'd get absolutely caved in against elevated competition. Jujhar Khaira also struggled as a C last season. He's far more effective as a winger where he can utilize his physicality.
I think the 97-29 connection will get thrown out there late in games when the Oilers are down and the benches get shortened.
Ty Rattie is on the top line next season or he's on waivers.

34 points last season was an anomaly looking at his career totals. He shot a career low 6.8%. Unless he's turning into a stone, those numbers are unlikely to be repeated.

Lucic Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>goodfella</b></div><div>What is Dallas getting out of this that benefits them?</div></div>
They push money already spent this year to a position they require--a top six LW. They essentially fill it for no cap impact for the next two seasons. They were in on him late as a UFA and now with an even greater need at the position he makes even more sense if they're able to get out from under the Hanzal commitment. Dallas also fills the void left by Antoine Roussel for a strong, physical winger.
After those two seasons, Lucic is 32 with three years left on his deal at $6m ($4.3 in real cash) with a salary cap at around roughly $86m. He's likely even more movable at that point to a cap floor team if his game deteriorates even more by then.
It's essentially a reduced price UFA signing for Dallas.

Habs Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Truebeliever</b></div><div>The Philly deal would work if the Habs were eating some of Max's salary and offering compensation if Max refuses to re-sign there.
The Hawks trade is HORRIBLE!!!! It just increases the amounts and the duration of bad contract decisions. Seabrook is an RD (Habs have Weber and Petry) pretty much finished now. Why would Habs want six more years of him?</div></div>
Because they have the space for him long term and he'd be a quality veteran to help develop future prospects. But primarily its to get Artem Anisimov for free. The pieces the Habs give up in the deal are of no consequence to them. The salaries balance themselves out until 2021. After that, Seabrook's contract will have two years left of term. The salary cap will likely be in the mid-90m range by then, meaning his cap hit is even less impactful, making it much easier to trade at that point. The Habs need Cs. If they'd followed this method, they'd have many. They didn't do anything, now they have none. But they still have Pacioretty for some stupid ass reason.

Maybe, maybe not. Kyrou is probably the best player in the OHL this year--him or Thomas. Add a first to one of them and I think that's the ballpark you can expect for a year and change of Pacioretty.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ricochetii</b></div><div>Find an alternative to Johnson.
Hansen signing I just don't get. Less so when you bump Hudon from the lineup.
Seabrook is a non starter. I'm not even evaluating the trade or judging Seabrook. A 3rd pairing RHD is not a need.</div></div>
Johnson is a puck-moving option that is available to compliment Jeff Petry. He's a player you'd be able to snag on a short-term deal because he's going to be looking for a higher salary, which the Habs can afford to pay. He's a different breed than Alzner, who's been a flop.
Hansen could be done without, but he's a decent buy-low who could bounce back in the East. He's a strong fore-checker, he has a scoring touch and can help out the PK.
Seabrook gets you Anisimov, who replaces Plekanec as your top shut-down center. This is the double-down move. Seabrook's contract is a deal-breaker for a lot of people, but if the Habs can limit his minutes, they'll have three legitimate options at a position that's very difficult to fill effectively. Bergevin has done a bunch of half measures on his defense since the Weber trade--this is a full measure--you'd have a real defenseman on each pairing for the foreseeable future. You have Carey Price--he shouldn't be average--your defense should help him out a bit.

Maroon is being dealt at the deadline. All of these trades are assumed deadline deals. I'm just seeing what could fit into next season's salary cap.
