SHOULD LEAFS HIRE SCOTTY BOWMAN TO REVIEW ROSTER AND BABCOCK
As of January 2018 Bowman is living in Sarasota, Florida, attending all of the Tampa Bay Lightning home games in his role as the Senior Advisor of Hockey Operations for the Chicago Blackhawks, managed by his son Stan Bowman. Scotty follows the league from Tampa Bay, as he currently isn't heavily involved with the Blackhawks.
That is from Wikipedia. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't work against his son. As soon as his son was hired by the Blackhawks he left Detroit and was hired by Chicago as an advisor.

Ceci has unfortunately become the Gardiner of years past already, i.e. the team's scapegoat who's actually playing well. That he leads the team in +/- doesn't surprise me. At one point Ceci messed up a zone exit tonight against the Sharks, but he returned to the other side and cut a passing lane to end the threat, repairing his mistake. Not something Sportsnet announcers would ever emphasize. But it's the attitude I like to see in our D: being aware of their errors, and taking responsibility for them. Gravel did a similar mistake before saving a goal in an open net on the same sequence tonight.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>borealis</b></div><div>When Miki is on the ice he definitely exhibits a 'will to win' and asserts himself as a visible threat to be reckoned with - as is case with Marchand, Backstrom, MacKinnon, Eichel to name but a few. Todate, only Moore & Kapanen have demonstrated similar glimmers of capacity. For all the hype surrounding the 'superior skill levels' of Matty/Mitch/Willy, imo none of them have as yet asserted themselves as 'dominant forces' to be reckoned with. While too early to jump to conclusions, at this juncture, it promises to be a long season - heavily reliant upon the reliability (continued good health) of Freddy.</div></div>
It's tough to predict Miki's salary next year, but if the trend continues, and given that contract negotiation is not Dubas' strong suit, I can't see him being signed below the Kapanen or Johnsson contracts. We'll have to unload one of our wingers at some point, and it will be interesting to see which one.
Agree re: Kapanen. The way he reacted to early season adversity these past few games is admirable.

Love the kid's game and attitude and wholeheartedly agree that the Leafs scouting staff did a heck of a job finding a 6'3 guy with wheels, edges, moves and a shot that is committed to playing a 200-foot game. I would argue he is the best or second best penalty killing forward on the Leafs right now (not including an injured Hyman). I guess my concern here, what will he want/need to resign with the Leafs. Early success on a last year of an ELC (feels like deja vu here) has not bode well for the Leafs and for a Dubas negotiation, especially considering how tight the cap is moving forward.
As for Ceci, I think he is overmatched playing against opposing teams' top lines. That said, I think he has performed amicably considering that assignment. He's not a top pairing D, and I think he'd play better playing against weaker player (other teams' 3rd and 4th line guys). However, he's done pretty solid work, and ironically, it's been more of Rielly playing bad D and giving up pucks, which may indirectly mask some of Ceci's less obvious errors or defensive laps. It will be interesting to see if the return of Dermott can alleviate some of this pressure, once he returns.

When Hyman and Dermott are Back
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>borealis</b></div><div>To his credit, Hyman is a very hard worker. That said he HAS to be because he possesses 'B'-grade skill set. You might want to run your lineup past Matty, but it's my understanding that it was Matty who requested Hyman be moved off his/Willy's line! Is this not correct?
Ever read that Toronto Star article of Sept 2010? The dad is a businessman. Ever wonder what tradeoff the dad made to 'bow out'? NHL is serious business ...and one has to wonder whether 'team Hyman' carefully crafts/promotes Zach's virtues/social media profile? IMO anyone promoting Hyman is either blind to implications of continuing to carry $2.25m AAV for an essentially special teams player...or being played for a dope.</div></div>
Huh. Thanks for the reference to the Hyman article in the Star. I looked it up and it's quite the read...

Mikheyev is a "Hyman". He should be the left winger with Matthews and Nylander. Tavares, Marner and LWer probably Johnsson but Moore is fine.
Have Kapanen with Kerfoot and either Johnsson and Moore. Kappy would see PK time also. Kappy doesn't seem to working well at LW.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>borealis</b></div><div>Given cap constraints, Hyman,'s skill set is just far too limited and infinitely better served by x3 players @$750k...or $ spent on Leafs blueline roster (whether those you've proposed or others?). We know what Hyman can do. In '20-21' he will be 28 going on 29 and possesses zero growth potential. Give it up! Under limits resulting from salary payouts to others, Leafs can't afford Hyman's $2.25m sticker price. (You think he is worth +/- Moore, Timashov & Petan 'combined' ???)
Korshkov has more upside than many of the bench players that you've identified here. After <9 games in '19, and likely send down to Marlies for more TOI/seasoning, I could see him as a late season call up in '20..and likely full time roster player in '20-'21.
Sadly, imo, Liljgren has simply just not 'shown it' (which is not necessarily bad for a D)...but his aversion to hitting and to refraining from getting involved when his fellow teammates are roughed-up suggests that he should be given first pairing exposure on Marlies this year to assess whether he has sufficient merit for '20-'21 NHL call up.
Just saying.</div></div>

What's not being taken into account is when Rielly and Andersen are set to be UFAs and even more money will be needed for at least one of them.</div></div>
So I actually had a trade of hyman for Mayfield and there was enough cap space left over that I cancelled it and signed demelo

Handling next year
SDA is the Leafs Bruno Caboclo. Bruno was drafted by the Raptors in 2014 as surprise pick. The draft analyst commented....he's two years from being two years away. Same with SDA, the youngest guy taken in his draft year. Two more years of junior, two years as Marlie. He might be NHL ready 2022/23. Somewhat the same with Robertson. A few years away.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rileylmao</b></div><div>I would trade Johnsson any day of the week before trading Kappy</div></div>
Only explanation for that is you are a Finn.....
My take is Hyman and heres the reasoning :
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Laudan</b></div><div>if you dig deeper, youll notice its the most obvious choice. Johnsson, Kerfoot and Kapanen were just signed. Kerfoot and Kapanen are reportedlly killing in camp with speed ( and thats not against Hainsey ), which is rare skill. On the other side, Hyman is 28, had ACL ( i had one, not an easy comeback with those ), hes entering last years contract after this shortened Season, and grit is easier to find then speed. With another 40 Poinst Season TML wont be able to give him 4x 4M ( guess why ) and with that in mind he was ment to hit the road anyway, it will just happen two years earlier. Im the guy with much of the Hymans mentality also, you go there and battle it till death, so i would really like to see him stay, but the truth is different. Dubarelli just kicked him and Brown out while caveing.
But then again, you have plethora of youngsters that can do his job like Moore, Engvall, Marchment, Korshkov, Mikheyev ( hopefully for 2 x 775k ) even Wilson, while for the speed the only name that comes up is Bracco ( and im still dreaming about Duszak and Hollowell to be transfered to the wing with size as their handicap for D )</div></div>

With Sandin over a 700k player (say Marincin) I think it's 20 players not 21 unfortunately
