<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BoringBrianMacLellan</b></div><div>I was real low on Alexeyev the first couple years he was here, but he really showed improvement this past year when he got regular play time after Edmundson was shipped out. He's big, pretty smart defensively, and has a decent shot at the point. And he's only 22 so there's still room to grow. I'm probably a lot higher on Protas than a lot of people. His playmaking ability is awesome, and he has a sneaky good snap shot off the rush. His big pproblem is his foot speed leaves him behind sometimes, and he doesn't seem to know how to use his size to his advantage in the NHL yet. But I think both will end up being real good middle of the lineup players in the league</div></div>

Funnily enough, while Protas doesn't have a ton of speed, his best hockey has been played next to two guys who thrive on speed (McMichael and Mantha). You'd think "oh maybe he's using his big body and making room for them" but he doesn't really hit. He's just a smart hockey player. Once he starts using his physical attributes to his advantage, he might turn out to be an awesome power forward. I wonder if he'd be better at center.

Spot on with the Alexyev analysis too. I unfortunately think most GMs will look at the large sample size of "meh" play and try to lowball the caps in a trade for him, but he strikes me as a player that will bloom later like Siegenthaler did. I'd prefer to keep him because I think a really good shut down top 4 defenseman is in there somewhere. I really like Alexyev and Protas but this trade would be a win for the caps imo.
