What could this look like
Pens decline. They lose a top tier left wing and their top pair LD in this.

LTIR Smith until playoffs to get flexibility
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pens3lieve</b></div><div>that has yet to be determined... Sullivan said longer term which for him normally means he's thinking 6-8 weeks at lest... but Dubas also said he's still being evaluated and they'd know more by next week which should give us the clarity we seek</div></div>
He's skating and traveling with the team. They said they will give an update after the road trip. He won't be out long enough to LTIR him.

Smith is going to be back sooner rather than later. This won't work.

Trading Guentzel but still trying to compete
Canucks kept Boeser at his lowest, they aren't going to trade him at his highest. Clearly the organization values him.

Ned is outperforming MAF. No need to make that deal. Smith isn't expected to miss the season so the other two aren't going to fit.

JP needs time to play and test himself. He won't be signed any time soon. Smith or Ouellet are probably coming up.

Smith's contract and production >>> Anderson. Kovacevic is a nice pick up though. We are looking for D depth so maybe a pick straight up for him?

In what way is this fair and a "lateral" move? Kane isn't even close to making the type of impact Jake does. Jake has him basically doubled up in 5v5 production and overall production. This is a huge no from Pittsburgh.

Trying to refill the pool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fixitf11</b></div><div>Do you believe that this team can win a cup with its defensive issues, lack of depth scoring, streaky track record, and lack of defensive depth. If you can’t win a cup I don’t see why you should extend Guentzel to around a 6x8M and ruin this team cap wise even further when you could turn the future of this incredibly old team around…just my opinion🤷🏻♂️. Heck you may be able to make a playoff/cup push with a real old Sid on the 3rd or 4th line in the future lol</div></div>
Anyone who makes the playoffs can contend. This team is 6th in goals against per game, while being top 10 in goals for and goals against per game at 5v5. They are literally just missing a depth piece and a functional power play. Selling with the core still on the roster shouldn't be discussed unless you are willing to sell it all.

1 point out of a playoff spot. Finally getting good goaltending. Sid on pace for a 50 goal season. You want to throw in the towel... no

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Danny_Canuck</b></div><div>They are not but it's going to be a buyer's market I think. Not many can make it work and given his age not many teams will likely be able to meet his demands on term for next contract. I'm pretty confident he won't get traded that said we'd certainly do 1st + Kuz + Raty. No go on Willander/Lekkerimaki.</div></div>
I don't think he gets traded either, but if the pens come down with an injury to one of the big guns and they slip out of the race... then he will go. And you are right on limited landing spots too. That can hopefully drive up the price.

After TDL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>So the team that has ludvig, shea as NHLers, wouldn;t go for a 3rd yr pro with good hands and producing ability who has looked good in limited NHL glances? Or couldn;t use some toughness and size and pk ability? Or would rather have a rotating 4th line or never-weres/has beens with zohorna, nieto, johnsson, gruden, harkins, nylander, hinostra, etc....at least he can provide solid play and something they lack
Maybe you dont like them but Attard has shown far more at a younger age and in his 2 pro seasons than Ludvig or Shea. (in the above, they aren;t re-signing Poulin).
Thats fine you dont want the deal, but its rich to call them AHLers when looking at the Pens current roster</div></div>
Sure I'd give you a 4th for Attard, but Deslauries is a 13th forward at best and he wouldn't cost a decent prospect+.

If the pens sell it's a 1st, + one of Raty/Willlander/Lekkerimaki, and a current player. 40 goal point per game players aren't cheap.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SwarmChair</b></div><div>I don’t man. Long term extensions and UFA money doesn’t usually hinge on they success of one season.</div></div>
It does when you only have a few seasons left to contend with an aging core.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SwarmChair</b></div><div>They may be BFF. But Guentzal wouldnt commit to the Pens on an extension. Which means the Pens need to move him and not risk losing him in UFA for nothing.</div></div>
This isn't true. They are waiting until the deadline to see what the teams status is. If the pens lose a big guy to injury and their playoff hopes look bleak, Jake will be traded. If they continue to climb the standings, stay healthy, and keep playing great hockey he stays. It's a waiting game.
