How is Montour better than Carrick at this stage in their careers? They are both similar sized 22 year old (born within days of each other) right handed D. Carrick has 53 games experience in the nhl, while Montour has none. The last time they both played in the AHL at the same time (15/16 playoffs) Carrick put up 1.20ppg compared to Montour's 0.56ppg. Does everyone think Montour will be the next Tyson Barrie just because he was overlooked twice in the draft and still put up the numbers he did in the AHL last year? As Matty stated above, Montour could still end up being a TJ Brennan type and not be able to compete at the nhl level. I am not going to suggest that but ESPN has Montour ranked #118 on the top 120 prospect list. Leaf prospect Travis Dermott is ranked #90. There seems to be a severe overvaluation of Montour, not just on this thread but many others.</i></div></div>

Just for reference Montour has .79 points per game in his AHL career and Carrick has .6 points per with more NHL and Ahl experince. Thats is a huge difference.</i></div></div>

Montour has played 1 full season in the AHL, as a 21 year old. Carrick was already playing in the NHL at age 20. Who knows what Carrick's numbers would have been in the AHL had he played out his full seasons as a 20 and 21 year old. When they were both in the AHL at the same time at the same age Carrick out-produced him 1.2ppg to 0.56ppg. You could argue that Carrick was on a better team, yet both teams got trounced 2nd round of the playoffs. Montour could be the next Tyson Barrie, or he could be the next TJ Brennan, no one will know for sure for a couple years. Since Montour currently sits around 10th on Anaheim's defensive depth chart, I would imagine he could be traded for cheaper than a lot of the current proposals.</i></div></div>

You just answered your own question. Montour has out produced Carrick with less experience. Using any predictive measure that shows that Montour has a higher ceiling than Carrick. Also small sample sizes (like a playoff) can lead to improper evaluation. Its why teams end up over pairing players for one good playoff run (see Bickel).</i></div></div>

He certainly has outproduced Carrick in the ahl. His ahl career is off to a great start. Seriously though, I do not think anyone would suggest that Travis Dermott (#11 d in leafs system) currently has more value than Connor Carrick (#7 d in leafs system). Per ESPN Dermott (@90) is a higher ranked prospect than Montour (@118). If a &gt; b and b &gt; c, how can c &gt; a?
