Agreed, but if a 3rd is the price, Carolina would be better off sending New Jersey's 3rd instead and keeping their own.

Leafs would need their own 3rd round pick for that offer sheet amount (along with a 1st and a 2nd). It also has to be for the next draft year (So you can't use 2019 draft picks).

I would think the Ducks could get Spooner back instead of Hayes. I was thinking the Bruins signed Dominic Moore to make Spooner available for D help.

How is Montour better than Carrick at this stage in their careers? They are both similar sized 22 year old (born within days of each other) right handed D. Carrick has 53 games experience in the nhl, while Montour has none. The last time they both played in the AHL at the same time (15/16 playoffs) Carrick put up 1.20ppg compared to Montour's 0.56ppg. Does everyone think Montour will be the next Tyson Barrie just because he was overlooked twice in the draft and still put up the numbers he did in the AHL last year? As Matty stated above, Montour could still end up being a TJ Brennan type and not be able to compete at the nhl level. I am not going to suggest that but ESPN has Montour ranked #118 on the top 120 prospect list. Leaf prospect Travis Dermott is ranked #90. There seems to be a severe overvaluation of Montour, not just on this thread but many others.</i></div></div>
Just for reference Montour has .79 points per game in his AHL career and Carrick has .6 points per with more NHL and Ahl experince. Thats is a huge difference.</i></div></div>
Montour has played 1 full season in the AHL, as a 21 year old. Carrick was already playing in the NHL at age 20. Who knows what Carrick's numbers would have been in the AHL had he played out his full seasons as a 20 and 21 year old. When they were both in the AHL at the same time at the same age Carrick out-produced him 1.2ppg to 0.56ppg. You could argue that Carrick was on a better team, yet both teams got trounced 2nd round of the playoffs. Montour could be the next Tyson Barrie, or he could be the next TJ Brennan, no one will know for sure for a couple years. Since Montour currently sits around 10th on Anaheim's defensive depth chart, I would imagine he could be traded for cheaper than a lot of the current proposals.</i></div></div>
You just answered your own question. Montour has out produced Carrick with less experience. Using any predictive measure that shows that Montour has a higher ceiling than Carrick. Also small sample sizes (like a playoff) can lead to improper evaluation. Its why teams end up over pairing players for one good playoff run (see Bickel).</i></div></div>
He certainly has outproduced Carrick in the ahl. His ahl career is off to a great start. Seriously though, I do not think anyone would suggest that Travis Dermott (#11 d in leafs system) currently has more value than Connor Carrick (#7 d in leafs system). Per ESPN Dermott (@90) is a higher ranked prospect than Montour (@118). If a > b and b > c, how can c > a?

Two big moves
If these trades win the leafs the cup then I am sure no one thinks twice, but If you are going to trade 2 of your top 3 prospects and that many picks the lineup better go all the way. Is this that team? Reminder that ANA owns the middle of the three 2017 2nd rounders. By trading away the SJS and TOR pick, ANA by default gets the OTT pick, leaving the leafs with only 5 picks in next years draft (no 2nd or 3rd). Regardless, the rebuild would clearly be over.

Leafs were able to get Connor Carrick along with a cap dump (Laich) and a 2nd rounder for Daniel Winnik. Leafs should be offering Komarov for that somewhat comparable return, not JVR with half salary retention.

Marincin played both sides last year. Hyman played RW last year (he's a RH), Soshivov can play both sides though a lefty. Same with Andreas Johnson. Leivo is a RH shot. Just don't think we need a Hemsky. The Leafs would have signed Parenteau if they thought they need a veteran RWer. Michalek plays both wings. He has a unwritten NMC from the Leafs (otherwise he wouldn't have waived his NTC from Ottawa last year). See you didn't include Marner at RW either.</i></div></div>
Not sure if Carrick can handle the minutes, and if Zaitsev struggles Marincin or Hunwick are moving to the top pair to play with Rielly. I think Leafs talked to PA, and they couldn't agree on a price maybe? Either way, Hemsky's underlining stats are a bit better than PA's. Was thinking about Marner, and then noticed that he will be attending the rookie tournament in London. Rarely do players invited to that tourney end up starting the year on the main roster. Still thinking at 160lbs, he needs to add some more weight, but who knows maybe he makes it.

Take a look at some random Dallas Rosters and look for Hemsky, not saying its right but to me most Dallas AGM want him gone. By giving them Greening and Corrado, Dallas saves 1 million in cap space and gets an OK D prospect.

BOGO Sale
Zaitsev and Carrick aside, I think the most important D to protect is Morgan Reilly. Best way of accomplishing this is by not forcing him onto his off-side where he struggles, and giving him stronger partners than Marincin and Hunwick. Have a read of this article from ppp.
<a href="http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2016/8/9/12331450/examining-how-morgan-riellys-partners-affected-him" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2016/8/9/12331450/examining-how-morgan-riellys-partners-affected-him</a>
Can't pair him with hunwick if hunwick is playing somewhere else. It would be nice to trade for a younger better RHD than wideman but lets face it, their isn't much available. Wideman should be able to get the job done for 1 year, seems to have fallen down the depth chart, and probably wont be missed in calgary.
Also, having a veteran RH RW like Hemsky that can actually produce in the top six (unlike Michalek and Greening) will take pressure off Nylander and Brown. It should also prevent Babcock from playing Komarov on the top line on his off wing.
Those are my thoughts anyways.

Although the cap will be more in 3 years, this to me is the reason why you trade JVR and move on. You will need his cap space in a few years to keep the younger core intact.

What are you talking about? Aside from Matthews and Marner, there are only half a dozen players in this line-up that have never played an nhl game. For 3 seasons down the road that is a pretty conservative stance.

What is with the overvaluation of Montour? Same age as Lindholm and never played an nhl game. Could be a career ahl'er, even if he lives up to his potential he is absolutely BURIED in Anaheims system. So you wouldnt trade a depth defencemen in your system straight up for a top 6 LW??? ..... right .....
Edited according to thehockeynews montour is 10 on the depth chart, 1 ahead of korbinian holzer .... JVR alone should be worth Richtie + Montour if a salary dump comes back

There is nothing wrong with the line combos. Babcock had players in similar spots last year. Top line after the callups with bozak and JVR out was LEO-KADRI-SOSH. Also 2nd line was HYMAN-NYLANDER-PAP. Morgan played right side majority of year when paired with hunwick or marincin. Maybe Zaitsev plays offwing likes most other russians? There is a record on mapleleafhotstove.com of last years starting lineups for reference.
