No reason for either team to do this. Alot more could go wrong for both teams than could go right. I'd imagine both teams are pretty happy with their guy too. Both are really good young 1Cs.

the best way for Tampa to solve their goalie problem daccording to me
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>The reply was a joke. The way you wrote your previous post, it left things up to interpretation because instead of saying a 5th round pick, you said "a 5". A 5 could mean a 5th round pick or a 5th overall pick. It's reasonable to assume that you meant a 5th round pick, because we are nearly a year away from the draft, we don't know who has the 5th overall pick. Those two things in combination create humour around a common misunderstanding. It was my way of connecting with you, as one human to another.
You could say my reply was capricious, but you could also say I was trying to being friendly, almost like I was being, capfriendly.</div></div>
My apologies then but if that what you consider humor your sense of humor comedy isn't your thing.

Anaheim Ducks signed Alex Killorn (4 Years / $6,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>There is no way they expect him to play out this contract. He will be 34 at the start of the season. He went the College route, so he has less miles on his body than a player who came up in Canadian Junior and jumped right to pro, so I guess there is a possibility that he maintains his play a bit longer than a normal player, but I wouldn't bank on it.
If you see him as a big difference maker like Giroux in Ottawa, then I guess it is justifiable.</div></div>
For most 34 years olds I'd agree. But one of Killers biggest strengths is his ability to stay healthy and he's always in great shape

No way anybody gives up a 1st and a very good prospect for Gibson. He’s one of the highest paid goalies in the league, and he’s been on the decline for the past few seasons. That may be more the team’s fault than his, but it affects his trade value. He wouldn’t get 4x$6.4M if he was a UFA now, so why would anybody give up valuable assets in a trade for that contract?

I like the idea of Nemeth in and Reilly shipping out of Boston. I haven’t watched Nemeth play but his bio is a kind of like Forbert 2.0. Size matters in the playoffs. Reilly has skill and can play good hockey, but is the odd man out of the B’s D rotation.

Sharks tank for Bedard and Toronto gets a goalie
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>Why is San Jose adding a 3rd though?
I see these types of trades online all the time. They are EA Sports let's take advantage of the AI style trades.
As in, people think Reimer is worth a 2nd, so instead of doing Reimer for a 2nd, they do Reimer+a bunch of random pieces Toronto doesn't want that make up the difference between a 1st and a 2nd.
Trades rarely work like that. Teams don't want to give up 1sts, unless they have to. If there is already a path of least resistance in a 2nd round pick, they aren't giving up a 1st, even if they get back a few extra pieces.
A 2nd for Reimer is already an inflated gun to the head type return. There is just no universe where he gets a 1st. The only exception being if there are conditional elements like playoff wins, that Reimer is never going to hit, and by some stroke of luck he outplays Samsonov and they meet the conditions.</div></div>
yeah I agree Reimer for a 2nd makes more sense, I was just saying for a 3rd because that's what's in this trade proposal

Trade Deadline Shakeup - Trading Chabot Before Anyone Notices His Decline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>Chabot was more productive than Dobson. He just played less games.
Left, you are right.
Age, is nearly irrelevant. There is a 3 year difference in age. Defenseman have longer primes. Because the Sens stink, Chabot doesn't have though playoff minutes on his body yet. I would argue since their age will never be a factor during the lifetime of their contracts, team control is more important. Chabot is team controlled for longer than Dobson.
Since you touted the eye test so strongly, can you give me three specific things Dobson does better than Chabot on the ice? I would like to learn.</div></div>
Age is not irrelevant. A defensemans prime years are 22-28 years old, a lot of evidence points to defenseman peaking at age 24 or 25 YO.
Dobson is an RFA at the end of his contract, it’s really not important. The isles have had no problem retaining their RFAs with arb rights.
Dobson has a better shot, he’s better defensively and he’s one of the best defenseman in the league at winning puck battles in the defensive zone and then immediately exiting the zone with possession (which chabot isn’t good at).

Trade Deadline Shakeup - Trading Chabot Before Anyone Notices His Decline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>I would be surprised if it is seen that way in the NHL among executives. Chabot has been a top pairing defender for years, and one of the lone bright points on a bad Ottawa team. Maybe a year or two from now. Dobson has not surpassed him yet, but it is a possibility.
The title is slightly facetious, because he has had a bad few games to start the season.
Chabot has the better resume, is not much older, and has more team control. Dobson is cheaper for the next two years after this season, but there is risk that Dobson could walk to free agency through arbitration. He also will likely cost as much or more than Chabot on his next contract, even if he doesn't surpass him, because the salary cap is set to escalate. If Chabot was an arb eligible RFA today, he would get 9-10 million. Ala Werenski, Nurse, Jones, etc.</div></div>
Dobson was better than Chabot last season and young top pair RHD are arguably the hardest position to find. They are rarely available in trades and lottery teams go into every draft praying to find a top pair RHD.
The isles would never make this trade, it makes them significantly worse now and in the future, the isles are giving up a 1st in a deep draft AND have to take Zaitsev. This is one of the most unrealistic trades I’ve seen on this site.
The risk that Dobson walks to UFA is extremely low, it’s not even worth bringing up.

Tampa Bay Lightning signed Pierre-Cédric Labrie (1 Year / $1,270,800 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>LTIR increases the cap ceiling for the team by the amount they are over by when they place the player on LTIR.
Meaning, the Lightning want to get as close to 6.875M (Seabrook's cap hit) over the cap before they place him on LTIR.
If they do not get a full 6.875M over the cap, they effectively lose that space.
Sending down Myers and signing this contract were both paper transactions to get Tampa 6.875M over the cap on day one of the season. Once their roster is set, they will send down Labrie, and recall Myers. Once LTIR is set, their new cap ceiling remains in place even if the move non-LTIR players. That's why you sometimes see teams when setting their opening roster send players who made their team down and recall players who didn't. This is a more extreme version of that.
That is why Labrie was signed to such a specific AAV. The performance bonus is not counted toward his AAV for LTIR purposes, and he is probably not in the plans to play in the NHL. In the unlikely chance be hits the bonus, the 500k cap can be deferred to next season.
If someone wants to inflict maximum chaos on Tampa, they could claim Myers. It would throw off Tampa's LTIR ceiling structure. Additionally, it looks like Ian Cole may not play anytime soon, and possible may not play ever again if the grooming allegations are proven true. It seems like the Cole stuff happened after Myers was waived. Tampa likely expected that no one would claim Myers because of his inflated real money salary this season. Maybe the Cole stuff will change that if a team with cap space sees an opportunity to extort Tampa for a pick by claiming Myers.</div></div>
Just wanted to add one thing to this excellent summary: The performance bonuses are there to give Tampa a PB "cushion" for the year. That 500k PB becomes their season opening PB amount, meaning that if they recall a player on an ELC with PBs less than that amount, it doesn't count against the cap. Without that cushion, a team has to add a player's PB to their cap hit when recalling a player under LTIR.

Anaheim Ducks signed John Klingberg (1 Year / $7,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>The perception on Hall had taken a nose dive by the time he hit free agency.
The pandemic hurt everybody who was a UFA, but if he was perceived as a superstar, someone would have found a way to give him a big 7 year 60-70 million dollar contract. Which is what Vegas did for Pietrangelo, and Vegas was one of the teams with the least cap flexibility in the league.
It's similar to Gaudreau this year. We're Gaudreau's options more limited due to the cap that they would otherwise be if we were at 90-100 million for the cap? Yes, of course. But Gaudreau is seen as a superstar so more than one team made a play for him at superstar money.
Hall and Klingberg weren't seen as superstars anymore. Hall hit free agency 2 years too late, and it likely cost him 10s of millions of dollars since he effectively got 6.4M over 5 seasons when he probably expected at worst 8M x 7 and at best 11.5 x 7 ala Panarin.
Both are seen as top 6/top 4 but peaked at the wrong time to cash in as a UFA, and signed a 1 year deal in hopes of having a bounce back season. Odds are, whatever Klingberg signs for next year will be worse than what he could have got long term from Dallas or this off season.</div></div>
Both parts are true. People thought Hall and Pietro were both going to get 10-11 for 7-8 years. Hall's value dropped, Pietro's didn't. Hall got 8 mil x1 year and Pietro got 8.8*7.
Without the pandemic Pietro would have gotten another mil. Hall it's hard to say, but I think both his play and the pandemic contributed

Possible offer from ottawa
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>You uncovered my plan to devalue players on an internet message board. Dammit, I was so close to getting away with it!
There was a very important qualifying word throughout my paragraph. I will give you 30 seconds to re-read. Okay, here we go. The word was (If).
<strong>if
/if/
conjunction
1.
(introducing a conditional clause) on the condition or supposition that; in the event that.
"if you have a complaint, write to the director"</strong>
I never insinuated that Laine wanted out, or that Columbus did not want to re-sign him. I proposed a conditional context where that package makes sense.
For all your fears about an anonymous poster with the avatar of a famous Japanese organizing guru devaluing hockey players on message boards, if anything, I upped Laine's value! Because I stipulated that (if) Laine is available in a context that often results in players getting low returns (he wants to leave in a year as a UFA, the team doesn't want him), the 7th overall + + would be a reasonable return. We're on the same team here. I am working undercover for Jarmo pumping his players values on internet message boards in case a rival GM is reading.</div></div>
you spent far too much time on that reply thinking that I actually care. I was just saying that the offer is not enough because that context does not exist
