stone should never be mentioned in the same sentence as kuch. I'd love to compare stone and Marner but Marner is more dynamic, more consistent, puts up more points and on a team with plenty of stars, out plays them all. Stone was over paid(for a understandable reason). I don't know if this hurts the leafs or helps them though. compare them as equal, then get marner for a cheap 9.5, consider marner a way better player(he is) then 10+ is expected.

never got more than 64 points and never played a full season. yes I thinks its safe to say he will produce more on vegas but based on his history, they over paid. i get why they did though, if they lost him, it would have been a disaster.

they over paid Nylander, i agree. Not Matthews though. There is definitely a chance they over pay Marner but with the cap restrictions i'd say its less likely. And yes, they will have to get rid of other players. thats how it works

Marner is going to be paid. But it isn't going to be for 8 years. Leafs just can't do it. I also think that Dubas has shown he's all for paying what is deserved and the players know it by now. Its a numbers game now and if anyone is going to "help" the team get to the number they need to, its Marner. That doesn't mean he's going to take less money, but he may be willing to compromise on term. Although i would like to see Dubas squeeze out a bit of a discount, god knows we need it.

No teams that are currently any good can make this offer. So i say take the 4 first round picks, likely going to have lottery picks the first year atleast considering matthews will be playing by himself.

While Muzzin would be a great add to any team, I believe the worse thing the habs can do is trade away picks or prospects. They aren't as good as they are playing and a guy like muzzin will only keep them as a bubble team.

How To Fix The Oilers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OilersFan77</b></div><div>We're already fine at drafting. That's the only thing Chia did well. The guy who runs our amateur scouting is now at the helm so we're good there. It's the trading and FA signing that the new GM needs to be better at. The Chia hate stemmed mostly from losing trade after trade and the Lucic signing, a bright spot was him filling the pipeline with promising talent.</div></div>
Drafting is almost as bad as the trades he made. The oilers only have 4 guys drafted outside of the the 1st round since 2013(i don't have the stomach to go back further) to even play a game in the NHL and none of those have ever come close to a full season.
This is by far the biggest joke of a management team there ever was and T.Gretzky and his scouting team is a huge reason for such failures. Every single person in that organization needs to go.

Leafs are still a top team without Matthews. They did this last year too, but without TAVARES. Its going to be a long damn month, but when we come out of it with a winning record and add both Matthews and Nylander(or his trade equivalent) is added, its going to be very exciting!

great post. Not sure I would have chosen Lundqvist for back up though, he's not at his best anymore. I have a feeling the Aliens would run our goalie so we should probably carry 3. Comment on somehow getting D upgrade WITHOUT trading Nylander
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MG1986</b></div><div>So Nylander is not part of the core, even signed? Interesting. I would not consider Anderson part of this core.</div></div>
When he is playing, sure he's a core piece. I'm referring to being movable. We can't keep everyone, unless they give us discounts(which so far is not turning out). If someone has to go to stay cap compliant and competitive. Those 5 guys would not be moved. that leaves Willy as the odd man out.
A goalie as good as Anderson is always a core piece. Problem with goalies is they can be unpredictable. So right now he's playing good, so he's part of the core.

Kap has had a few good games. He is not a part of the un-tradable core. It is Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Reilly and right now Anderson.
We've seen continued improvement from Dermont, Z looks like he did 2 years ago and Oz has gotten better each game. If we trade anyone outside of the above, unless its a steal, we are trading for continued depth so that we can extend the contender status past the 8-10 year mark.

Matthews gets more, unless he's feeling generous. A 5 year contract walks Willy to UFA status, no way we pay him 6.9mil and get no ufa years out of it. Tanev isn't worth a first, let a lone Z

Any team facing a hot goalie is going to lose, playoffs or not. The pens have always been lucky to have a hot goalie at playoff time. Their D is worse than the leafs, they just just consistently played team defense better. Since you first comment, the leafs have improved significantly in their own end.
Gonna have a good test tonight

Nylander is worth way more than people think
Yup. I agree. I had said before, if he holds out, he'll be Toronto's new whipping boy until hes traded. Its because everyone wants him and we are upset he isn't signing for what the team needs him to sign at. I'm pissed about it too, but only for selfish reasons. Unfortunately for the kid, he's going to lose this round. I just hope management has been treating him with respect, just to show the others guys that they are safe in T.o. and its worth giving a bit back just for the chance to play here.

I think if the leafs had plenty of space for Willy to paid then you wouldn't be hearing that. I personally see a large difference in play between the 2 (regardless of what the stats say). Marner is just so dynamic. I wish I had Willies play to compare it to this year. And in respect to likability, Marner is the cities sweetheart and is probably only behind matthews when it comes to that.

Nylander is worth way more than people think
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div> So how does it make sense to bridge a guy for 2-3 years (ages 22-25) and then give him a massive 8 year deal that is paying for the best 3 years of his career only to lose value as the player is in his early 30's? Why not lock them up for their best years at a fair price and then give yourself negotiating power on contract 3 since the player will be 30. At that age, he can't command a massive term and cap hit since there is a mountain of evidence showing this player's best hockey is in the rear view mirror.</div></div>
I agree with you, just not with what the fair price/value is.
Its best for Nylander to bridge then clean up(with someone else) on a contract in 2-3 years. Its best for the leafs to sign longer term so his contract is "cheap" in the final years. If news reports are true, willy's asking for more than the leafs can pay him( because 10 out of 10 times they are going to choose to pay marner first). His value is definitely debatable when you consider his place in the league, but not when you only consider his place on the leafs. He's their 4th best forward and will be considered 6th when it comes to long term planning(Reilly and Anderson before him). This is not only my opinion and not only based on stats. Even if he is only slightly behind Marner, the leafs still can't pay him. Thats why he has such a concern about being traded.
Honestly, even if Marner and Nylander were of equal value. The only difference being where they grew up. Who you gonna choose? This contract is not about his league wide value, its about his value to the leafs.
I just heard, Dubas is on his way to Switzerland to meet with Willy, lets see what comes of it.

I know you are a huge stats guy and we've had this debate before. There is more to hockey than stats. When the entire hockey community believe peak is in the 26-29 range then there is validity to it. its not just numbers either. Players play both ends of the ice as they get older. Ovi is the perfect example of this. 100+ points 4 out of 5 of his first seasons, then a drop to 80-90. Thats cause he started crossing his blueline and is WAY better for it. This is what i have found when quickly looking at some superstars stats.
And to your point, if Willy's gonna peak at 24, why would the leafs give him 7+ long term when during most of that contract he's going to be declining. Willy's better off signing a 2-3 bridge if he wants 7+ eventually. He's a really good damn player, but right now, no where near as good as he thinks he is going to be and won't be paid it.
