For 2023 to make the trade realistic the headliners would be McDavid for Shesterkin, but neither team has a reason for the trade. The Oilers can find a cheaper option at goalie and the NYR doesn't have a good replacement the cap notwithstanding.

Tough break that Norris is at that point. Not ideal for cap accumulation, but gives PD some time to decide.

No assumption that it is the only option, of course a myriad of possibilities, but moving Joseph's contract seems the most likely option. It would allow for Pinto to get re-signed and provide a few bucks of cap space. Other moves like Brannstrom don't clear enough cap unless Pinto lowers his reasonable current demand, which would be contrary to reporting. How do you see the Sens cap situation getting resolved?

The Sens probably are going to have to pay one way or another. Either a younger NHL prospect, a lesser valued NHL-ready prospect, or pick(s)/prospect(s) to move Joesph's contract

But you basially proposed the same trade I did a few posts earlier; not because i'd do it straight up, but just because it's something to think about considering both 1st OA potential/trajectory.
Cheers mate!</div></div>
I read a story saying both are out of favor and that a swap is being discussed. Change of scenery and all that, yada yada, The Slaf/Laffy trade allows the Pinto trade to happen.

I would love to see Roobroeck force his way on the team, that goal last night was very nice. My guess is the development focus will be on Edström to see if he is 4C material in the NHL.

I was talking more about Joseph, but if the cap gap to overcome is small. Are talking about a 21-man roster; How much $$ is needed to clear to be able to sign Pinto?

It would seem the Sens are going to have to pay someone to take Joseph's contract. I suppose an overpay for Pinto could satisfy PD also. Am I missing something and if not what does the trade look like to you?

Potential prospect swap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LumberJacques</b></div><div>Gallant is far from the only coach to favour the big lads, the thing is that the NHL as a whole doesn't value undersized defencemen much unless they are absolutely elite. While he is signed for cheap, his role to this point doesn't suggest this is likely to be an underpay.
The fact that he is waivers-eligible means that any acquiring team needs to have a very high level of certainty that he will take a regular spot on their defence and be a better option than their current lineup. If that is the case then how much of an upgrade is he? Does he simply improve on your 6th Dman, or your 5th or do you believe he has a very strong chance of being an upgrade in your top 4? Given his lack of experience at the NHL level it would be incredibly optimistic to assume he would feature among a team's 4 best defencemen.
Following my reasoning above most teams would likely view him as at best a bottom-pair upgrade. This begs the question: what would you pay for a possible bottom-pair upgrade who might also never be more than a 7th Dman at the NHL level?</div></div>
Jones's value to a team would be as a PP QB

Wheeler and his durability concerns are the pivot point, the NYR need him to play a full season and at a higher level for lineup stability. Going nowhere if Vesey is in the top 6.

Some good ideas. Thinking Wheeler should be able to create the space for Chytil finishing and Kakko may be duplicating some of what Wheeler does if they were together, but I would like a PP1a and 1b depending on matchups.

Your comment was about how could someone think of value differently. Raymond's development was to get premium playing time while his d-side poor play was allowed, while Laffy's development was to be a 200-foot player.

The 5v5 ppg are similar, Raymond's PP time accounts for the disparity and then there is the career +/- Laf +5 and Raymond -49.

season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_K</b></div><div>Not an easy question to answer tbh. Every team will be making their cuts out of camp so it's not really a time that GMs are trying to make external additions. I guess if someone really saw something they loved, they'd pay a later pick, like outside of the top-90, but most teams have players of this caliber in their systems that deserve a look anyways. For example, the Blues have to get Tyler Tucker and Scott Perunovich some ice time, they can't be spending picks on other team's guys. If he gets grabbed off waivers, is it really significant loss to the Rangers?</div></div>
I am not making a comment on the fit with the Blues. Jones is NHL ready having played 1LD and at a high level in the AHL and also some NHL experience. His worth is that he can step in right away, the Rangers will not just let him go to waivers, a likely trade would be a swap for another regarded prospect that is blocked on their team. He will be in a camp battle for 3LD and PP2 QB, but given Gus' experience and having played for Lavi, Gus will probably win the 3LD position. If Jones shows out in camp or in the early season, a 2nd rounder could be in order, but he could also win the position which is preferable to the Rangers. if Jones can take hold of the position, then it will be a one-year no-risk insurance deal with Gus.

Yes, Trouba would certainly need to pick up his O game. I hope Laviolette also plays matchups rather than strict PP1 and PP2 as GG did. Gus could well be the PP2 QB.

PP2 and Trouba, I would not mind an open competition. Trouba did run the Jets PP, so after pairing with Lindgren looking for a resurgence on his O side. ;)
Gus's connection to Laviolette is another factor but Jones should get a shot after his strong play in the AHL

For three years I would not think a raise, more like 3@1.25. The comments by Motte at the end of the season and the beat writers' comments as well make me think they already have a deal done but are pulling a Lou and not announcing until the last moment.
