Dancing with the devil
That Habs trade is genuinely terrible. Anderson's contract is an albatross. Savard is fine, but even retained there's no way we're giving up two firsts, two NHL defensemen, and a decent young forward for that.
Montreal would have to pay or retain to get rid of Anderson. Savard retained might be worth a first. The rest of the pieces involved are insane.

That Marner trade is horrendous. The Parayko we'd be getting isn't the same player he was a few years ago, and paying a declining defenseman $6.5mil into his mid-to-late 30s seems like a recipe for a boat anchor contract.
If you're moving Marner (which you can) it better be an actual impact player coming back, not a 30 year old mid-tier defenseman.
Between that trade and the Graves and Killorn contracts, you've apparently decided the solution to this team's lack of playoff offense is getting slow as **** and paying a lot for overrated, big defensemen.

I'm not sure why you think Toronto has no leverage. Sandin doesn't have arb rights, so unless he gets offer sheeted (which obviously hasn't happened yet) his options are basically accept an offer or sit out.
It's insane that in nearly every other situation where there's an unproven RFA with no arb rights, the sentiment would be that the team is in control. But somehow, when it's the Leafs, people are like "yeah the team is screwed, have to trade him".

I especially love the part where you add the extra 's' onto his last name, making it DubASS. Real clever stuff, high quality content.
This whole post is ridiculous. We're in the longest period of having a competitive team in ~20 years, and all you can think is "THE GM SUCKS". ****ing delusional. And why do we have Muzzin, Gio, Kampf, Bunting, Kerfoot, Brodie, Jarnkrok, NAK, and Samsonov. If Dubas wasn't GM, surely whoever is in his place would have entirely different depth players.

Maybe I'm just not as into Chychrun as a lot of other people, but a 1st, a good young defenseman, and our top prospect (+ another pick) feels like more than I'd be willing to give up for a 1st/2nd pair tweener. Like, he's a good player don't get me wrong. But that is a lot to give up for a guy who has mostly just been good.
I also cannot imagine Kallgren getting that much after what will presumably be a year in the AHL, and even 1.5mil seems a bit rich for Schenn. Also, there's no taxi squad so McMann and Kokkonen will need to be sent down, meaning this roster will have no extra F or D which is fairly unlikely.

This entire forum is a cesspool, nobody ever looks at other teams situations. It's mostly a "pick a team to send a player to", and not even remotely a Leafs-specific issue.

I think it's a lot more the former than the latter. The KHL isn't exactly loaded up with strong, young centres either. Probably a stylistic difference in development. Maybe more emphasis on shifting the best players to wing?

It's kind of wild how big a difference there is between winger quality and centre quality on Team Russia. The wingers are loaded, but as far as international best-on-best those centres leave a lot to be desired with Malkin declining and no real heir-apparent. Goaltending is obviously unreal, and the defense is stronger than it has historically been. But I think they'd struggle matching up with other top countries' centre depth.

What?
We literally just don't need to move him, there's no reason to give the Islanders any kind of asset to take him when he makes league min and will almost certainly be sent to the Marlies. Fill the Clune role, a veteran leader and "good pro" to play fourth line minutes.
Why would we downgrade a pick just for fun?

The Clifford trade is kind of needless, his contract can be buried on the Marlies and seems likely to serve a leadership role there. No reason to give up even a small asset to move him, no benefit in doing so at all.

Just because you prefaced something with "Look Toronto fans..." doesn't mean you're saying something even remotely true. Paying a 2nd to get someone to take Kerfoot is nuts, since when do perfectly fine middle-six players on fairly priced contracts have substantial negative value?

Chychrun is a good player, he's probably even very good, but saying he's worth three 1sts + Sandin + other picks, prospects, and players is also ridiculous. When was the last time that many assets were given up for one player, let alone a player who isn't like a "best-of-the-best" kind of player.

This is such an insane overpay for Skjei. He's a good player, but there's no way the Leafs trade both of their young, cost-controlled NHL regular defensemen plus an additional 1st round pick for Skjei who already makes > $5mil and only has 2 years left. You're gutting the entire future of the defense for a non-need.

I'm curious that you think the Leafs have too many all-offense, no-defense players on the team. Aside from Nylander, who is another one? The idea that Leafs forwards are all defensively weak is a myth.
The lineup, as you've constructed, is pretty terrible up front. NAK as a 2nd liner and Simmonds as a 3rd liner are playing way over their heads. Chychrun would be a nice player to have, but it's not worth detracting this much from the rest of the lineup just to further strengthen our already pretty good defense.

Yeah, 100% agreed. I don't think moving Muzzin is terribly likely right now as a cap move at all. Maaaaybe later in the season as part of some kind of hockey trade, but even then I think unlikely. He has value to the team.

Citing the absence of precedent in an unprecedented environment isn't a very compelling argument. (Not that I think we'll get a first plus for Muzzin -- I think that's overboard -- but that my friend Salzy is right in thinking that there's no motive for us to do anything without an incentive.)</div></div>
There's also no incentive for the Leafs to make that ridiculous trade though - why would they give up a ton to move a player they don't have to move? Pacioretty was a bit of an odd situation because (pre-LTIR Lehner) Vegas needed to clear a pile of space and still don't really have close to a full roster.
Even Marleau, who had a higher cap hit and was a far worse player, only went for a 1st. And even then, Carolina was the only option because they had to buy him out since Marleau would only play in SJ (so the cost was inflated due to the necessity of a buy-out). Muzzin is a useful player and would be expected to play for the team he's traded to.
There's really no reason for the Muzzin trade to happen for either party. The Leafs don't have to and certainly don't seem to want to move him, Anaheim doesn't need him. It makes no sense.

I kind of think a Muzzin trade just doesn't happen now. They (the Leafs) will go into the season probably with 7D assuming Sandin signs. I could see a Muzzin move happening later if Gio still has enough to play third pair and Sandin/Lily progress as hoped. By the deadline it's possible teams that are contending experience their own injuries to a top 4 guy, or a team making a surprise run wants to add. Cap hits become a fair bit more palatable when the cap space is pro-rated near the deadline.

When has there ever been a global pandemic that froze the cap and greatly cut into revenue?
The Leafs dont have a shred of leverage if they decide to move Muzzin, Even Muzzin himself has more leverage than TOR with his trade protection
Not saying the Leafs should do it, but why does ANA for any less
Patches was different completely and isnt even remotely comparable. CAR is a Stanley Cup contender, all the teams that can take on Muzzin at this point are rebuilding</div></div>
Right, but Toronto also just doesn't have to move Muzzin. They don't need leverage since they don't need to trade him. If Anaheim is asking for like a 1st + a top prospect, that's obviously a non-starter. The Leafs have a full roster, Sandin will likely make less than $2mil, and they really only need to move someone in the Kerfoot-range. There's absolutely no need to make the trade you've suggested.

Gonna have to pay to move him without taking cap back and it wont be cheap to any of those 3 teams, especially with 2 being in-division for the Leafs
1st ++ attached to Muzzin or ANA hangs up</div></div>
You seriously think it's a 1st plus a bunch of additional assets to get someone to take Muzz? When has there ever been that much sent as part of a "cap dump"?
Muzzin's decline has been fairly overblown (which is SHOCKING since nothing is ever exaggerated about Leafs players...). He was injured for a fair bit of last season, and certainly has slowed down a bit, but he had a strong playoffs, and only has 2 years left on a reasonable hit for a likely top 4 defenseman. For example, a team just willingly signed Gudbranson for 4 x $4mil and he's a much lesser player. Teams value the type of game Muzzin brings.
Do I think the Leafs will get much or any return for him? No, probably not. It's possible it's even a Pacioretty-style trade where it's just future considerations coming back. Cap space is scarce and player values are inextricably linked to their contract at this point. But a 1st rounder + a bunch of assets just to get someone to take Muzzin is absurd.
