Thread: deadline 20
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DefenseFirst</b></div><div>Okay, I’ll bite.

Friedman has reported that the conversations around toews are over a second or third round pick. So how we get two two firsts and a second is beyond me given that Kane isn’t playing particularly well.

Hockey is a very chemistry driven sport. The right players, not necessarily the best ones etc. Seems to be working for boston, no?

I don’t care that they won a cup like 8 years ago.

Now, lets talk about the actual additions. Of all the right wingers on the bruins roster in this ACGM, want to guess who has the fewest even strength points? Ya, that’s right, it’s Patrick kane (as i say this, I’m realizing that the last time i looked that up was about a week ago, so Kane may have caught up to Debrusk since he’s missed the last 10 games or so).

Now, is that the third line you want? Bruins currently run a very responsible third line that can score, and can really grind. Furthermore, neither of these guys are on the top PP, and Toews probably wouldn’t get any PP time. How’s he going to play when he isn’t getting his 3 minutes of PP time per game? How’s Kane going to do without the 3:38 of PP time? Are they going to be a defensively responsible third line? Maybe. Maybe not.

How is pulling the teams top penalty killing forward (nosek) out of the lineup going to affect things? How is it going to play out when the entire team hates Montgomery for sitting clifton even though he’s ten times the player jones is?

Very little upside, a lot of downside, and you’re giving up two firsts and a second. That seems pretty brutal to me. This team doesn’t need a huge shuffle, just depth.</div></div>

Because you clearly followed the Bruins run in 2011, you saw how chemistry was such a big deal then right? After a huge team bonding activity where they beat the Habs up as a group, they traded three pieces away for 3 new pieces...wasn't at a bad idea then, it isn't a bad idea now.

You're acting like scratching a player is banishing him from the team. Clifton and Nosek are available to you as you need it, that's what depth entails. A grittier game, through them, a game where skill is at the forefront, take them out. The Bruins this year are at their best when every line is contributing offensively. That third line will be the highest scoring third line in the league. Maybe Kane's "not so good year" of scoring ONLY 34 points in 45 games, has to do with the fact that he's logging too many minutes for his age, maybe cutting his ice time back on the third will allow him to flourish against weaker matchups.

Also just so happens that Jonathan Toews isn't awful defensively, he's actually quite good. There are still 6 good penalty killers up front in that lineup, there are still 4 good killers in the back in that lineup.

You mentioned PP, I'm glad you did. The PP has been brutal as of late, probably the biggest part of the reason why the Bruins have dropped 3 straight.

Your first unit stays: Bergy, Marchy, JD, Pasta and McAvoy
The second unit now is: Kane, Toews, Hall, Krejci and Lindholm

That is a massive upgrade on Zacha and Foligno. So that when you first unit isn't on the ball for whatever reason, your well rested, capable, highly talented, second unit can go on and score against the weaker killers.

Lastly, to win the cup, you need to know how to win, which means you need to know how to defend. Patrick Kane and Joanthan Toews beat the Bruins in 2013 by defending. I'm sure they'll defend when they have to, to win what will likely be their last cup.

To tie things up, we go back to your famous chemistry. Jonathan Toews has played with Bergeron internationally an average of every 2 years since they began their careers. Patrick Kane is one of the most popular players in NHL history, and probably the best American to every tie skates. I do not doubt for a second that both those players will be brought into the fold nicely by a veteran group that has a close bond. Especially when 8 days after the deadline the Bruins head off on a 5 game road trip...which just so happens includes a trip to Chi-town......
