I don't get why people, especially canes fans, feel so strongly about ANA winning this. Fleury has had his ice time trending way down since the bubble (averaged 17+ min in his 20 games leading up to their exit from the bubble, only 12 min in his last 20 games), hasn't really been an impact on the ice this year, gets flipped for a guy who by analytics numbers is good defensively (admittedly not all that familiar with the guy) and physical which will be needed for a deep playoff run. Plus they get a throw at the dartboard on top of that. Think this is a good trade for both teams TBH.
Only way you can really fault Carolina at this deadline is if they know TT isn't coming back and they didn't make a move for top 6 forward talent.

Canes have $10M+ in deadline cap space (per capfriendly) so they're definitely not desperate to move him for cap reasons.

They might bite on one of the NHL RHD on the Leafs but I feel like there's not really a deal that would make sense for both teams. Leafs and Canes just aren't good trading partners at the moment.

That feel for the game will be irrelevant once the playoffs come around because Paquette will be a healthy scratch by then.
And he'll walk in free agency and you overlook it, so there's that.</div></div>
No, I said the fourth line is played when RBA "feels" he needs some physicality or a spark.

Show me where I overvalued him? Just saying the canes had specific intent to get Paquette, if they wanted Paul instead they would have made a trade for him.

If the difference between Paquette & Paul is only 5-10 draft spots, the canes could have just swapped Paul & Paquette in the original trade and included a late round pick to make up for that. Your logic is flawed.

If he's playing only 6-7 minutes a night in the regular season, he'll be a healthy scratch during the playoffs.
Guaranteed.
Carolina does this for the reasons that I mentioned in the description to this post.
I hoped you at least read them before commenting :)</div></div>
Paquette plays just as much as the rest of the canes 4th line (with the exception of Martinook who kills penalties). When there's three lines that can score & play well defensively the fourth line becomes a "feel for the game" type line rather than a line that sees regular playing time.
Also, if Carolina wanted Paul over Paquette, why wouldn't they have just made that trade to begin with?

Good point, assuming the return on Hamilton from Anaheim is Gibson (plus pieces on either side to balance)?

100% agree need to keep away from PLD. Although I'm not sure the Canes do this trade unless someone like Nino/Gardiner are going back for cap reasons (which WPG probably wouldnt take). Would make their cap situation difficult next year assuming they sign Laine, Svech, Hamilton to deals totaling $20M-ish, that leaves only $10M to sign 2 goalies, 1 D, 4 forwards. Think the value on the trade is fair, just handcuffs the canes from a cap perspective.

Part 1 of a youth movement
Carolina doesn't have the cap space to make this trade & then sign Svech/Hamilton. As it stands now (without any scratches/taxi squad cap hit) they're about $2M under the cap and probably wouldn't be able to take on the increased salary this year. Even if the cap hit worked, don't think Carolina gives up this much for Couture.

100% agree it puts them in cap crunch, mostly just messing around with this & seeing "what if". Some people take this way too seriously lol.
$28M available to sign 11 players is not a good spot to be, especially when 2 of those 11 probably eat $15-$20M. Seems like they'd be in a similar spot to TB this year.

If you don’t want to start off with a younger more premier player like Necas or Jarvis then it really doesn’t entice me too much. Detroit will need veteran guys to help the young wingers we already have coming the next couple years (Zadina, Raymond, Berggren, etc)</div></div>
If I'm the canes I move Jarvis way before Necas. So does a trade like this look more like Jarvis, Bokk, 1st, Niederreiter?

Thought I had added Bokk in, not entirely sure what happened there. He could be interchanged with a few different prospects if needed.
