<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>You know what. I hope they pay OV that much, I really do. I have no problem the Caps destroying that cap.
What I do know, is OV shouldn't be playing at 235-240lbs. He can't skate and everyone knows it. Other players don't even view him as being one of the best players in the league. He didn't get a single vote from players when they voted that. Not one. Even though he still scores goals.
It's because he's slow. He can't skate. He's one dimensional in that he has a great shot, but nothing else. He's not hard to beat on defense. He isn't going to smoke anyone with speed on offense. If 4 other guys aren't doing the work to create him space he's in trouble. One on One he doesn't scare a single opponent.

He might be able to play till 40 as a power play specialist. Sitting him his dot, not really skating much and shooting. I will give you that.
But every year he looks more and more like a statue out there. His line this year has been ineffective in 5v5 play. They are coughing up more goals than they score. I think if that trend continues, and I think it will, he won't be a 1st line player more than a year or two. He's 34, the game got faster. His wheels are falling off. Even with him focusing more on his speed. It's a bit late for that.
If I were WSH I would keep him at 2 year deals. You will end up screwed paying him on a 5 year contract till he's 40. He can barely keep up now.
By that 5th year you will be paying 11 million a year for a 4th line player.</div></div>

What do you consider as ineffective when looking at a line's performance at 5 on 5? Here's the Caps' current top line with Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Wilson while on the ice together at 5 on 5 play:

CF%: 56.98% FF% 55.38 SF: 160 SA: 123 GF: 16 GA: 14 High Danger Chances For: 63 High Danger Chances Against: 49 HDGF: 9 HDGA: 10

Let's compare that to the Bruins' top line of Pastrnak, Marchand, and Bergeron

CF% 59.03% FF% 57.95% SF: 270 SA: 178 GF: 30 GA 17 HDCF: 88 HDCA: 67 HDGF: 13 HDGA: 11

Is it really that far off? Main difference being that the Caps arguably have more scoring depth (7 double digit goal scorers vs 5). 4 of the Caps double digit goal scorers are not on the first forward line. Yes, that might play into your argument, but the Bruins rely much more on their top line than the Caps do.

Now, I agree that the tail-end of a long term, high dollar contract for Ovi could be painful. He's no spring chicken anymore, and I agree with you there.
