SIgnings
1. If we sign Trouba (big IF) then we absolutely 100% have to let Myers walk....with all our high end forwards needing raises we can't pay a 3rd pairing guy 5.5mill.
2. Connor will NOT sign for less money than Nylander - his stats will be far superior to what Nylander had when he signed his last deal. If we want 6+ years of term for Connor it will be over 7 mill (IMO)
3. Just curious - whats the rationale for signing Laine for a 1 year deal at that price? Usually you go short term if you want to keep the cost down OR if you aren't sure what you have yet and need to see more. The kid will have scored 36, 44 and +50 goals as 18, 19, 20 year old. What more do we need to see? If we could get him for 3 years at 7.5 mill (keep cap down) so we can keep other players around longer...but if it's up north of 9 mill then I'd just say pay the guy 10-10.5 million and lock him up for 6-8 years.
4. Chiarot taking a huge pay cut to play on a 1 year deal on our 2nd pairing? No chance....he's exactly the type of player that has to cash in on this scenario....if we don't pay him some other team will. No way a guy like that will take a discount as he only likely has 1 payday in his career.

Next Year
I'm assuming you are a Leafs fan and are holding out hope you can keep all your young stars....I'm a Jets fan and holding out faint hope we can do the same. However, i got some back news for you...
1. Nylander signed for 7 mill after a 60 pt season. Marner is on pace for 100+ pts this year ....so unless he is willing to take a discount 7.5 mill is too low. It's likely gonna be north of 8.5 mill and very likely start with a 9.
2. Kapenen is on pace for 30 goals.....you really think he's gonna want to sign a 3 year deal at 2 million? Even a bridge deal for that type of production is gonna be in the 3.5-4 mill range. Even if he moves lines now that Nylander is back and finishes the season with 20 goals and 45 pts he's still gonna want WAY more than 2 million.
You guys really need to flip some of your offensive talent for some Defense.... yikes that looks thin back there.

And centre depth is everything these days. But Laine has the potential to be by far the better player, and perhaps the next great goal scorer. He's already one of the best shooters in the league. And he's 3 years younger than Drai. If Nuge can prove he can be a solid 2nd line centre and drive a line, I absolutely accept.</div></div>
YES.....finally a hypothetical that doesn't result in trolls spewing vitriol when all that was intended was some sharing of thoughts. Thanks for the feedback

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SammyT_51</b></div><div>Interesting proposition but you know that Laine on McDavids wing would be 60-goal scorer constantly lmao. I would say that Draisaitl and Pulju for Laine and Roslovic (who would be 3C in EDM) might be more interesting as Laine has higher roof than Draisaitl and Pulju than Roslovic which helps balance it more and dont lose anything from depth on positions included in trade.</div></div>
I know...it's super interesting when you look at all the angles. I love Laine and as a Jets fan it would kill me to see him score 60+ with McDavid. However, the bar is continually being raised in terms of what salaries will be in play in the summer of 2019. It starts to become a question of....would you rather have Draisatl at 8.5mill for the next 7 years or Laine at 9 mill? 10mill? (Personally, I don't think he's proven hes worth that much yet but if he scores +35 again he has a case). That extra 1-2 million in savings could go a long way to keeping the rest of the young guys who need raises (Connor, etc) here long term.

Trocheck
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigE</b></div><div>I mean this in the most endearing way possible....but you guys are all nuts. Trocheck isn't a normal 2nd line C...he put up 31 goals and 75 points last year and would be a #1 C on 1/2 the teams in the league....with that said he is undersized, his advanced stats are average (though his zone starts are defensive, which is somewhat odd, but clearly he's a 2 way player). He'd fit in nicely on a line with Laine and has a great contract.
For reference, and as I've said before this trade is very similar to the Jones/Johanson trade....for reference, Johansen put up 71 points, but is much bigger and had better advanced metrics....more a prototypical 1st line C. Mark Pysyk is interesting, former 1st rounder.....but in looking at his stats he shouldn't costs Appleton....probably someone like Spacek....or, if they are giving up on Petan. Lastly, Trouba is a fringe 1st pairing dman....For example, on Florida last year he wasn't better than either Yandle or Eckblad he'd be their 3rd best Dman....at least right now....which is why a 2nd rounder is also given up...In hindsight I'd change the trade to Trouba, Petan, and a 2nd for Trocheck, and Pysyk.</div></div>
Lots of interesting dialogue a few last comments
1. yes...i agree Trochek could be a 1C on many teams and perhaps Im undervaluing him in this trade. He wouldn't be a 1C on the Jets, and yes, he would fit nicely with our wingers.
2. I argue you are doing the same for Trouba....he is a legit 1st pairing D league wide. You can always find a team with a better RD which would bump him down to a 2nd pairing (Ekblad, Karlsson, Doughty, etc). His advanced stats are great and his counting stats are good considering he is PK specialist at this point and hasn't got PP time due to presence of Buff and Myers.

Chevy also hangs up if this trade is offered. I know that each franchises fan base always values their own players higher than others...so I admit I may have that same bias. However, I agree with the quote above.....1st pairing RD is worth more than a 2C - especially to a franchise that is already pretty set at the C position.

Yeah...Jets have ZERO room for Myers in their cap plans going forward. They will have +13 million tied up with Trouba and Buff as their top 2 RHD.
Am I missing something about the "6 extra pieces"?? Or did they revise the trade? I just see Armia + Petan + 2nd for 10OA....which I don't think is nearly enough value to get #10.

Myers is one year away from being UFA....Kelfbom has many years left at a good cap hit. Isn't an argument over who is "better" it's who has more value at the moment. Jets would way rather have several years of Klef at a shade over 4 mill than 1 year of Myers at 5.5. As a Jets fan I'd do that swap in a hearbeat

Cup Team
my thoughts (take them or leave them)
1. Can't see anyway that Morrissey signs that contract....if he's getting 7 years he's asking (and deserves) more than 5 million per.
2. Too much money for the term given to Stastny.....signing him from 33-37 years old when we have Roslo trending toward a 2C position isn't necessary. I'd say we throw an over value 1 year deal at him (we have the space this summer) and see if he'll stay.
3. Not sure why everyone is so down on Little..... he's at worst a league average 2nd line C for the next few years. If we need to move him in year 3-4 of the deal I can see that. Perrault is the piece that needs to get moved when we are short on cap space. I love him but not at the risk of losing any of our younger skill wingers.

Sportsnet report Tavares is "potential fit" in Wpg....could cap work?
A couple comments....
1. I agree this team is good enough to be a legit contender without Tavares
2. I don't think that should in any way influence a decision if it were actually possible to add a player like Tavares. Golden State won the 2015 NBA championship and then added Kevin Durant. If you have chance to add a player of that talent you do it.....99% of the time. The 1% is if he is a known cancer in the room or an asshole.
3. Yeah...I realize that performance bonuses may result in a few more moves. However, I stand by the fact that if we are willing to bridge some combo of Connor, Roslo and/or Morrissey we could make it work.
4. Perrault absolutely would fetch a pick or two without $$$ coming back. His underlying numbers are awesome. Kulikov isn't a valuable asset in a trade but if he's healthy to start next year I don't think he has negative trade value - worst case scenario we attach a 4th round pick and ship him on his way.

You get a RD that is better qualified than Hainsey or Zaitsev to play with Reilley on top pair and you get a LD who can take the 2nd pairing minutes until McDermott is ready.
We get better balance on our D core and a bit of cap relief from Kulikov's contract.

Losing Laine to add Tavares is pointless IMO. The benefit of having a solid center core is defeated by the loss one of the games best goal scorers, who will be better for longer than Tavares will. Given the age gap.
Fair enough its a hypothetical idea but its counter intuitive at the core. For WPG of course which is the perspective of this AGM. From the NYI perspective......YEEEEHAWWWW!!</div></div>
Ha...way too much deep thought being put into off the wall hypothetical situations that have zero chance at happening ;)

I'm just throwing up hypotheticals....not advocating for this trade. This trade has nothing to do with Laine's playoff performance. However, adding Tavares would put us in the same class as Pittsburgh with Crosby and Malkin at center. We'd be a better team long term with Tavares (having said that I love Laine).

Teams trade for upcoming UFAs all the time for a playoff boost, they usually don't trade them If you think the Jets as Cup contenders trade their upcoming UFAs so be it. But I do agree with FMarco, the Jets probably get the best trade value for Trouba this summer.</div></div>
Ok ....we can find some common ground somewhere. I agree....if Trouba signed a 2 year deal this summer and in 2020 we were a contender we wouldn't trade him at the deadline.
All i'm saying is that the Jets management will NEVER put themselves in that spot. We will know very shortly IF he wants to stay here long term. If he does, we sign him to a 5-8 year deal. If he and his agent will only consider a 1 or 2 year deal we WILL trade him this offseason or next.. His trade value is sky high after a solid playoffs and he would bring back a kings ransom....Chevy is far too smart to let this drag out for another 2 years and risk losing him for nothing.

Anyhoo, Wasn't Trouba's only real beef with not playing his natural side and wanted better minutes? He's getting that now and plays for a real good team. Unless he is absolutely dead set about playing for hometown Detroit, not sure why he would leave if the money he'll get is what he deserves.</div></div>
Living in the market here pretty much everyone feels the Trouba situation is a little more sticky than just him "wanting to play his natural side"....that was the narrative his agent tried to use to save face and leverage public opinion. It didn't work at all....fans saw right through it and the public consensus was he wanted to play in the States.
However, it seems like a deep playoff run and a team trending up as the current rumors are that wants to sign an extension. Hope that's true.

If we knew that Trouba didn't want to sign long term that is deal we'd likely consider.
Would Edmonton consider?
Myers (you could negotiate extension) + Lemieux = Kelfbom
That deal makes a ton of sense for Wpg...and Edmonton gets some much needed help on the right side of the defence and a young fast skilled middle six forward on an ELC with some grit (much needed as well.) We'd toss in Dano for good measure ;)
