Who wins
Of all the players rumored to be traded in the Kessel trade, this is the last player I wanted. Rutherford was rumored to like him when Arizona got him from Montreal. He is a negative player that has skill? Hopefully he gets traded to Minnesota for Jason Zucker. Obviously this is the first trade with a couple cap dumps coming up. There are several wingers in free agency that will make this trade okay if we are able to sign one.
This is good for Phil Kessel and I wish him all the luck in Arizona. He was a big part of 2 Stanley Cups. Thanks Phil.

Bite the bullet
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Arom5477</b></div><div>I’m all for trading Kessel. The data proves he’s more of a detriment to the team than a positive figure and he handcuffs all of the lines by forcing the coaching staff to play him with Malkin. BUT. If you’re going to trade him just so you can afford Donskoi and an older 3LW, then it’s not worth it. I’d rather just trade him for multiple high picks and go for a (preferably younger) big fish UFA (Ferland, Dzingel, etc.)</div></div>
I agree that getting Dzingle would be the best option only he will get more than 5 or 6 million. They would have to dump a lot of salary.

You are on the right track for what the Pens are looking to do. Why don't we add JJ to the Arizona deal?

The 3 way trade has a chance if you take out the 2nd round pick. Pittsburgh makes out better than the rumored Minnesota trade where they had to take on the contract of Victor Rask.

I like the idea if Duchene would want to come to Pittsburgh. I take it you have Letang on Right Wing by mistake? Maybe we could try to strengthen the defense next.

The Penguins might have an interest in Subban and Bonino by trading Kessel or Malkin. The Preds would have to retain some of Subban's salary. Personally, I would have no interest in Subban unless the deal was to good to pass up.

If rumors are true and Malkin is traded
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>I thought the rumor was Huberdeau and the 1st for Malkin? Either way, both deals would be awful for Florida.
Also, Kessel wouldn't waive his NMC to come to MN.</div></div>
My post said a spin to make Pens fans happy. The reason I changed the trade from Huberdeau to Trocheck is because Trocheck is a homegrown product for Pittsburgh. He also plays center and could replace Malkin. There is also still a chance Kessel agrees to play for the Wild.

Wild Ducks Leafs Trades
I noticed you had Justin Schultz as a forward on the first PP. I could see Jason Zucker playing the spot where Kessel plays on the Power Play. He did that a lot with the Wild. Last year I was researching the league to find a RW for Sidney Crosby. Even though Zucker plays LW most of the time, he can play RW too. He has the speed and the grit necessary to succeed playing with Crosby. You have him as LW with Malkin which makes sense because of the speed like Hagelin had with Malkin. Here is another thing I am looking for the Pens to acquire. It seems like at the end of the year the only offense the Pens could generate is deflections in front of the net. I don't feel they have defenseman with a good enough shot from the point to make this successful. Letang has the worst shot I have ever seen. It improved over the years, but he used to be lucky to hit the glass behind the net most of the time. They never could get Brent Burns from San Jose, but that would be the best trade they could make.:p

Looking Good
The Gudbranson trade has changed the Pens identity from a fast skating team to a tough in front of the net team. This might have been from necessity but it could prove to be successful. The Penguins best defense was a puck possession game in the offensive zone. They have struggled all year as other teams have become just as fast. Since the Penguins still have high end talent in Crosby, Malkin and Kessel and more balance with Bjugstad and McCann they should remain a cup favorite. They should get better goaltending from Murray with a clear crease.

Toughness and scoring
I am going to use this space to wine and cry about last night's game with the Flyers. The Simmons hit on Dumo was high, but Simmons is a tall player. It is up to the ref to make the call and Pens to take advantage of it. As we found out later, the refs in this game sucked big time. When the Pens have a lead the Flyers strategy is to draw a penalty by going after Evgeni Malkin. They came down with a pretty good slash on Malkin's wrist, the blind referee let it go and Malkin held his cool as much as possible. The Penguins should have had a powerplay as this slash is almost always called. Then Matt Cullen slashes the puck carrier twice on the shin pads and the ref calls him. Cheap, Cheap, Cheap. The Penguins held up pretty well with only 4 defensemen for most of the game. They lost there top 2 defense and Jack Johnson played over 30 minutes. Not a recipe for winning hockey. Murray gave up a weak goal which he has to quit doing if Pittsburgh is going to make the playoffs. I grew up watching this rivalry all my life and this would be your typical game back in the day.

Ryan Strome
The idea of trading for Kevin Hayes is growing on me. He can be the Jordan Staal of yesteryear. I hated when the Pens traded Recchi and Coffey to the Flyers, but we won a cup. I will learn to like Kevin Hayes. The Rangers could get a solid defenseman in Maata a pick and maybe someone like Aston Reese. They would have to retain money for only 1 year to make it work. That is a lot for someone who is going to be a free agent next year.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mk458</b></div><div>As someone who watched Strome fail when played on McDavid's wing, I'll let you know that he probably won't excel with Crosby either.
He's got a decent hockey IQ, but he's slow and he doesn't have a quick release or a great shot. He's a decent 3C simply because he can make good passes and he can stay in a good position. But he'll never be a high scoring winger IMO, not even with Crosby</div></div>
Sid prefers a fast winger and the Rangers might not have interest in Brassard. The fact that Ryan Strome has played with McDavid could help him be successful with Sid because he has skill and offensive instincts. Most likely I will agree that the Ryan Strome trade is a gamble. The Kevin Hayes trade might be worth a look for the 3c.
