(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
So what this boils down to is:
Montreal traded Poehling and a 4th to Pittsburgh for Matheson and 25% retention on Petry's contract
Then traded Hoffman and Pitlick for a 2nd in 2025, DeSmith and a career AHLer

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Also Nylander must be pissssssed lol</div></div>
Why would Nylander be pissed?
If Debrincat can ask for $7.875M after scoring 66 points
Nylander can now say to Toronto he is worth $10M on a contract extension after scoring 87 points
If anything this drives his value up
Nylander should be happy every time someone gets paid what they are worth

Some fans didn't like the Dach move either
Give the kid some time
I think 3 years from now we can judge these 2 moves
But
I think Newhook may be a better NHLer than both Drajcevic and Augustine combined
I also think we should have taken Michkov but I hope Reinbacher proves me wrong
But what I think doesn't matter or else Geoff Molson would have hired me instead of Jeff Gordon

Some cap dump that could be interesting
I read in the Athletic that the Habs will want to start the season with Price on the IR and not the LTIR
I don't understand the reasoning beyond something about it giving the Habs more cap flexibility if he starts the season on the IR for x number of games and then slides over to LTIR after the start of the season.
If the Athletic is correct with this report then we won't have the ability to take on any cap dumps
However if Hughes feels taking on 1 of these cap dumps is better than cap flexibility than it could happen.
Hughes has a game plan and I just hope he makes the right choices

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Not_Isles5513</b></div><div>My issue with the signing is that they didn’t take Michov. It just seems like Hughes and Gorton has done everything they can to minimize the impact of their top picks. After all, the five guys taken immediately after Slafkovsky are all better than the former #1 overall pick. Then you have the Dach and Newhook trades where Montreal overpaid for non-premium talents. Franchise looks like a mess rn imo.</div></div>
Talk about the kettle calling the pot black!
How much did you guys pay for Romanov?
I don't follow the Islanders but are you telling me your team doesn't have any bad contracts?
And you know for a fact that the 5 picks taken after Slafkovsky are better based on what information? Do you have a crystal ball?
I'm sure your franchise isn't in a mess! Are they the favorites to win the cup this year? Are you even positive that they will even make the play-off this year?
Every team in the NHL has flaws, at least Habs fans know that we are in a rebuild and most have embraced that fact.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Koskinen_The_Great</b></div><div>The difference being is that Mtl can move on with their new leadership group and didn’t need to pay to do it. I I saw a lot of ACGMs with a 4th or 5th to move on from Eddy which was also my argument that being a broker for said retained money was the same. A 3rd is best case scenario for salary retention. You take that and move on with a clean slate. There is no loss for Hughes and the Habs here. Eddy wasn’t this terrible hockey player because of his injury issues he was an unknown commodity and the Habs need to start moving bodies just like the Preds have done except Hughes actually got assets back here. Hoffman/Armia must be next.,</div></div>

At the trade deadline a retention spot is usually worth a 3rd so this means that the Habs traded Eddy for a 7th.
I think he is worth more than a 7th if he is recovered from his back injury.
So this is a loss for Montreal
But I understand why they did it --- they wanted to open a spot in the line-up for Xhekaj

5th OA will be Michkov or Smith.
The drop off after that is major.
So trading the 5th for the 14th pick would be equally as dumb as trading Bedard for the 5th OA pick.
Now that I explained it to you do you understand?

Weaponize Cap Space
By the math in this ACGM:
If Pittsburgh 1st (14th) + Boston 1st (28th) + Ottawa 2nd (44th) = Habs 1st (5th)
Than Habs 1st (5th) + Florida 1st (31st) + Habs 2nd (37th) = Chicago 1st
Or is the math in this ACGM a little off?

just some thoughts
If Michkov drops to 5th and the Habs don't want him (as I am lead to believe according to the media), then I like this trade.
We can then choose whoever is left of Reinbacher or Leonard with the 7th OA pick (which is probably what we would have done at 5th OA anyways)
Plus we get Hart in exchange for the 37th OA pick.

off the table
Do you really think Montembeault, RHP, Roy, Beck and Matheson are "untouchables"?
I get the argument that maybe Baron might be considered untouchable because we are so thin at that position
But if in some bizarre world where a trade for Fox, Makar or some other game-breaking right shot defenseman depended on including Barron in the trade...
Hughes isn't saying "Sorry can't make the trade because Barron is untouchable", NOT HAPPENING
I would even suggest that Guhle would be available if the return makes sense
365 days ago I thought that maybe Romanov was somewhat untouchable and we all know how that went

To MTL and WPG Fans
Just my 2 cents but if Winnipeg is trading PLD to a contender at the trade deadline than:
1) The 1st round pick Winnipeg gets wont be much better than the Florida pick this year
2) No contender is giving up a good roster player while going for a playoff push
3) Winnipeg will either have to take back a bad contract or retain on PLD because a contender will be close to the cap ceiling
4) The trade will probably look something like the Timo Meier trade
If Winnipeg want to get maximum return for PLD they need to trade him before the season starts
AND
Give the team they are trading him to a chance to negotiate a contract extension with him before hand
Personally I hope Montreal stays out of any negotiations for PLD
1) We are not winning anything next season so why bother
2) If he actually wants to play for Montreal he will sign with us after the 2023-24 season
Otherwise he can go play wherever he wants, NO BIG DEAL!
If we draft Will Smith at this draft we won't need PLD anyways
By 2025 we will have Suzuki-Smith-Dach down the middle, no room for PLD there unless we convert PLD or Dach to the wing
Also signing PLD as a UFA will throw our cap situation out of whack too (see Toronto with Tavares)
The only way I would want the Habs to trade for PLD is if we take Reinbacher with the 5th OA pick
So trading the 5th OA or Dach for PLD are both non options IMO
For me a PLD trade would look like the Florida pick plus 2 good prospects (maybe Beck and Harris) or NOTHING

possibility
I remember being real high on Chesley at the draft and I was disappointed when we took Beck instead.
I would be open to this trade because I think Ryan Leonard would still be available at 8th.
He is the guy I feel would work best with Caufield and Suzuki on the top line 2 years down the road from now.
But you are probably right that Hughes might take Reinbacher or Dvorsky 8th OA
If Michkov falls to 5th and Hughes decides he will pass on Michkov, I would want him to trade back and this offer seems fair

Gas Pedal Redo
I think the Habs might be interested in moving Gurianov's RFA rights to Washington for Mantha.
If Mantha stays healthy we can half retain on him and ship him out at the TDL for a 2nd round pick
or
If he exceeds expectation we could extend him and keep him

Fair and Reasonable Shakeup
Habs counter with:
Murray + Boston 1st (28th OA)
for
Habs 3rd (69th OA)
Moving from our 2nd (37th OA) to Boston 1st (28th OA) is not enough incentive to make this trade
Buying out of Murrays contract will cost more than 9 draft slots
Unless someone that Hughes really, really, really wants drops to the 28th spot (ie. Colby Barlow)
Maybe Anaheim gives you Boston's 2nd (60th OA) for Murray and Boston's 1st (28th OA)

Moving Duchene
Wait...
Are you suggesting that Gallagher with $1,000,000 retention + Edmonton's 24th OA pick + your 47th OA pick
is worth Clayton Keller?
So then why wouldn't we trade Gally + Florida's 29th OA pick + our 37th OA pick for Keller?
Besides Arizona wont want to touch Gallaghers contract because of the way it is structured
He will be paid 8 million next year and 9 million the year after that
Arizona is looking for the opposite of Gallagher
They want someone with a 6 million cap hit but with like 4 million in actual salary so they can reach the cap floor but pay out less actual cash
