If we dont win this year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>Yeah I mean thats a fair point. I don't think we're stuck with all of them, Kapanen Heinen are RFA's so they shouldn't be that tough, I'm sure Canucks would take Marino, but Carter and Zucker will be tough. Blows my mind we gave Carter an extension, not that he's bad but I think he's like 38 and we're nearing a rebuild. It's going to be a challenge, would've been easier trading pending UFA's at the deadline, but better to start then put it off.</div></div>
I think the Carter extension is an indicator that the front office doesn't see the window as closed just yet. They have to have confidence in being able to bring Malkin and Letang back.
There is clearly going to be a rebuild, but it looks like they're planning to do it at least 2 or 3 years from now - right?
Also - not to go all Billy Businessman, but I have to think another goal is to keep fans happy. Malkin and Letang being career Penguins, potential playoff runs for two more years - that's huge for ticket sales and extra revenue.

Chicago Blockbuster Before The Draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LetsGoPens69</b></div><div>
Letang has said “he thinks he can play forever”. He wants 5 yrs at 7M per according to “his representation”. Hextall/Burke don’t want to go 5 years. They want 2-3 year extension. They are far apart on the term. Not the AVV.
Letang-I’d say they settle 4 years 7.5M per. That’s pretty far from your 8.5M AVV and “his representation” saying they want 5 years 7M per.
</div></div>
Thanks for all that context; I think the biggest sticking point for forecasting what will occur with Letang is based on total dollars.
If he wants 5 x7 [35M] and Pitt wants to offer a max of 3 years, I believe that would drive the cap hit up dramatically. That would come out to 3 x 11.66M. Obviously that's a ridiculous figure and the the nature of a negotiation.
I hope they land on a healthy middle ground, but if the term were 3 years, that 8.5M figure seems pretty reasonable right? He'd be taking 10 million less to sign that deal, which also seems pretty absurd.

I've been trying to keep up with what the numbers would be for both Letang and Malkin, but didn't know there were direct quotes from their agents regarding the asking price.

Carolina Hurricanes signed Jesperi Kotkaniemi (8 Years / $4,820,000 AAV)
Hard to know how this will go, but all things considered, it's not a back breaker if they're wrong. The contract expires before he turns 30 and essentially has him locked through what would be his prime.
He's about to cross the 250 games threshold so you'd think there'd be a strong sense for "who he is". Having said that, he's averaged less than 14 minutes a game throughout his career, if he's really a top 6 guy, you aren't gonna know it if he's buried on the depth chart.
I think there are enough positive factors here to say this is a ok signing, but there's a ton of unknowns which makes it hard to assess.

Dumo is even worse than Rust. He'll be 32 going into that deal. But at least at 32 he knows no one is going to sign him to 39.
It could be they let him walk. Really hard to replace a 1LD. But they may go MP, Matheson, POJ on the LD.
Because Dumo is probably getting paid in the 6-7 range.</div></div>
Yea, that's what I was thinking - he's gonna want 6 to 7M.
I think that line up of LD you listed could work - always hard to say so far out.
It'd be great if they could hit on some future draft picks like they did with Letang and Guentzal .

Teams build down the middle.
I don't think your take here is really solid.
Fact is Rust is gonna get 7 years. Just like Hyman who was 1 year younger did.
You can say the extra years don't matter, but come on. Especially on a guy who's injured a lot.
I like Rusty he's a good player but when the deal comes at 6x7, they should move on.</div></div>
I see your point and also see how the the end of the deal will most likely look like nonsense.
My thought process is - Rust gives them the best chance to win a cup in the next three years. I don't know how they extend the winning window much further past that no matter how you cut it. I think a 6 x 6 deal is a general baseline for what he'll get. You're right though, it's not unreasonable to suggest he'll want a 7th year.
Also, what are the alternatives for next year if not Rust? (I'm literally asking, not trolling) It feels like they should go with the devil they know in Rust, instead of bringing someone in to see how they fit.
Maybe a better question is - what does Dumo's next contract look like? Because he'll essentially be in the same position as Rust, around 30 years old looking for a pay day.

Although, I’m betting Rust gets 5.5(same as Hyman), Geno 7.5M, Letang 7M, Heinen 2-2.25M, Erod 1.75M-2M. ZAR-1.75-2M, Kappy-3M-3.25M.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>I think they are going to let Rust walk at that point.
This team has too many cap issues next year to do that.
Jarry, Dumo, and Blueger are all due the year after.
Frankly, that is going to have more of an impact on the team than Rust.
At 30, we got the best years out of him. I don't think anyone can deny that. If the cost is 6 x 5 he'll probably be gone.
I'm ok with that, as long as we can resign Jarry and Dumo. As a 1LD and a solid goalie are much harder to find.</div></div>
I think they can keep the most valuable pieces of this roster together, starting this offseason with Malkin, Rust and Letang.
Trying to find a player like Rust on the open market is going to cost more than whatever he asks for this season. Who cares if he has negative value at the end of his deal? That's just the way it is.
I do think it's important to consider Jarry, Dumo and Blueger the following seasons - but I don't think they're positioned nearly as well unless they get Malkin, Rust and Letang resigned.
Having said that, I think Malkin is the main factor on positively positioning the team to stay together over the coming years. I don't expect a massive discount from him, but even a 1M to 2M difference in cap hit could retain Dumo.
Anyway, lots of conjecture - the point is they have to succeed in roster construction this year before you can project their team the following season - and that starts with Malkin, Letang and Rust.

It's not about what Malkin has done in the first 15 years of his career, it's about what centers who are over 35 years old should be responsibly paid.
7 Million per season is a lot, especially over a 3 year span - that's not even considering his recent injury history.
I'd imagine him doing a deal in the 16M to 18M dollar range - probably over a three year span. That has his cap hit in the 5.33M to 6M range.
Final thought - as of today, Malkin has the 6th highest career earnings in league history. A 16M deal would move him into 4th. All that to say, I think he already made all the money he needs. He may just want to finish his career in Pittsburgh.

I was curious where Comtois sat with Ducks fans.
From an outsiders view, it's hard for me to solve between the outlooks of Comtois, Steel, Tracey and Jones. Zegras and Drysdale are the standouts and the other 4 hover around the same spot in my brain... mind you, it's with a very macro perspective.
The Guentzal comparison is really interesting, I never thought of that. I perceived Comtois as a heavier, less cerebral player, but I think it's a totally valid take.
I'd love for Pitt to target Max Jones... what do you think the price for him is? I remember talking with you before about which pieces Anaheim would be looking to acquire from Pitt, I don't think they add up well as Pitt doesn't have much that would move the needle for the Ducks.

Why would we say Yes when the price is raised?</div></div>
I agree that the fit isn't there; I'm just using LA as example of what Pitt may get in return if they move him. The original price of a 3rd and a 4th seems more realistic to me, but at that point keeping him might be the better option. Ultimately, the goal is to get his salary off the books for next year, potentially add a piece for this year or hold a medium/low value future asset (Mid Round pick).
It seems like a pretty tall task to move him given his performance over the last 2 season. His AAV and term are right in the middle of being overpaid or perfectly paid.
All that to say, it doesn't seem like he really moves the needle, which may make this whole thing invalid.
Burke and Hextall have both made comments that they are looking to add but I wonder if Pitts recent performance is lowering the need. They may be finding solutions for the bottom 6 by giving a few of their AHL guys a chance due to the injuries they've sustained.

Yea, that's exactly how I reached this as a potential option.
Maybe Virtanen isn't the best choice, but I think Detroit would get more by doing two seperate deals for Glendening and Ryan. Not sure what to expect but either option doesn't seem wildly off base.

You can hype up his defensive play as much as you want but he is a UFA on the wrong side of 30. GM's aren't going to rush in and waste assets on that.
Virtanen is too much of a gamble to trade for. He makes a good bit more in actual salary next year than his cap hit shows, so teams probably aren't lining up to pay bigger dollars for a project like that. Plus, as a contending team you are better off getting something more proven to place into the lineup.
Also, I don't see Pettersson as a mid season trade. The amount of injuries we have had leaves me to believe that no one on that D is getting moved.</div></div>

I don't think JR did much to publicize this more than the fact that every team couldn't protect 2 goalies in the expansion draft. That's a conversation that's been happening since the Seattle franchise was announced. Regardless, it definitely was another factor driving Murray's value down.
