It's definitely a fair deal for both parties.
But when I look at other forwards drafted in 2019:
$7,000,000 x 7 would've been better for Anaheim (Boldy contract)
$7,100,000 x 7 would've been better for Anaheim (Cozens contract)
$7,800,000 x 8 would've been better for Anaheim (Caufield contract)
$8,000,000 x 8 would've been better for Anaheim (J. Hughes contract)
$3,300,000 x 4 would've been better for Anaheim (Kirby Dach contract)
$2,900,000 x 4 would've been better for Anaheim (A. Newhook contract)
Just kidding about the last two (they obvi aren't Zegras comparables).

Quoting: jr400

Ottawa will actually have less money tied up in their top 5 than Toronto will in their top 3.

Ottawa's top 5 will cost $40,500,000 next year.
Toronto's top 3 will cost $35,100,000 next year. (Matthews @ 13.2 / Tavares @ 11.0 / Marner @ 10.9)
And will likely cost around $35,000,000 the year after. (Matthews @ 13.2 / Marner @ 12.2 / Nylander @ 9.6)
Tavares likely takes a $6-8 million pay cut when Marners extension starts (or he walks, but I think he wants to retire in TO).

Matthews will be 27 when this contract starts ... and 31 when his next contract starts.
Anyone criticizing the Leafs for not locking him up from 31 - 34 is legit hilarious.
John Tavares is currently 32 ... and his contract expires when he's 34.
How long has Tavares been "too old, too slow, and over payed?"
A 4 - 5 year term was always the ideal outcome for Toronto.

Jackie Eichels | NCAA | 40 GP - 26G - 45A - 71P | 1.77 Points/Game | 0.65 Goals/Game
Fantilli just had the best pre-draft NCAA season in decades (arguably the best NCAA season in history).
People don't realize how good of a prospect he is (I think he'll get more points than Zegras this year).

(OTT/DET) - DeBrincat for Kubalik, Sebrango, 2024 4th (DET), 2024 1st (DET)

Quoting: CSStrowbridge

He was a bad player at $4 million, but a great player at $2.5 million. Ottawa is getting him at $2.5 million. You would get at least a 3rd for that. Hell, the Canucks got a 3rd for Luke Schenn. Also, Ottawa traded for Debrincat when he has a year on his contract and traded his signing rights. That lowers the value.

I will concede to your first argument.
But Detroit obviously negotiated a new contract with DeBrincat before they traded for him.
DeBrincats team has been negotiating with potential trade partners for weeks, and he signed immediately.
So Ottawa traded for him with 1 year guaranteed, Detroit got 4 years. That should increase his value.

Kubalik was a non-qualified RFA last year (and was traded for a 5th in 2019).
Sebrango was demoted to the ECHL last year (after three years in the AHL).
Combined they're probably worth a 5th round pick at most (not a 2nd + 3rd).
Ottawa traded a 7th overall pick and are likely getting back a 15th-25th pick.
For a 7th overall, you'd have to trade two 15th overalls, or three 25th overalls.
Ottawa traded:
- Pick 007 (2022)
- Pick 039 (2022)
- Pick 075 (2024) [estimate]
