1) Why would the Canes want Blackwood?
2) why would the Canes give up Orlov to bring in a 4th goalie?

Keeping Necas-Jarvis-Guentzel Long-Term
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jacketsman61</b></div><div>Do you truly think those two are just going to step in and be able to handle that role? Defense is difficult to break into the league. College is a good place to develop but the league is a lot faster. It takes time to be able to adjust.</div></div>
Absolutely. Looking at Morrow’s debut, I don’t think there is anything to worry about there. In all likelihood, Canes sign a defensively responsible 3rd pairing guy who can babysit Morrow for the season, with the next season Morrow likely making the jump up to play with Slavin. Nikishin will likely be handled the same way, but Nikishin is a bit more likely to be able to handle the extra workload sooner than Morrow in my opinion.

Keeping Necas-Jarvis-Guentzel Long-Term
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jacketsman61</b></div><div>Yeah but it still makes them even weaker and less depth on defense. The Canes really need to move one of those guys so that way they can allocate money more evenly.
Would Necas to CBJ for Provarov 50% retained, Boqvist, Dumais and a 3rd be interesting?</div></div>
With Nikishin and Morrow coming into play, the loss of Skjei and Pesce gets mitigated. Having 2 very good top pairings is a luxury, especially when the 3rd pair has been playing like no worse than a 2nd pair for a large portion of the season. Whilst it will hurt to lose them, it won’t hurt as so many people seem to think. Orlov was brought in to replace Skjei, and with Chatfield surpassing many expectations, Pesce becomes a little more expendable.
As for your proposal, Canes would not consider that. No need for a LHD unless they are a stopgap for Nikishin, at which point a 3LD can be signed for cheap, acquired via trade for cheap, or Smith/Fensore can be brought up for that role. Boqvist isn’t all that interesting, and Dumais plus a 3rd isn’t enough to get Necas.

Yzerman might actually be predictable this off-season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dca919</b></div><div>Vegas cap commitments next year 80.11M on 18 contracts (not counting Robin Lehner who very well could get himself declared as having recovered from the hip surgery in Aug '22).
Dorofeyev is 23 and arbitration eligible (he's already gone through his ELC and his next contract) so it's not going to be a minimum salary on 13 goals the previous year. Figure 1.75M - 2M contract. Lets go easy math and say 82.11M with 19 contracts.
Say you let some of the UFA forwards go and go the internal route....Brisson. His salary is above league minimum at 925k so still have a cap crunch. That's 83M for 20 players.
Now you want to sign at least one of Jonathan Marchessault, Anthony Mantha, or Chandler Stephenson. 87.5M cap and a team at 83M. <strong>Tell me again with actual numbers how you are not losing Marchessault and Mantha?</strong>
It's not one of them that's gone it's both unless you let Stephenson walk too.</div></div>
I was implying that Vegas was going to let Stephenson walk. Especially with the Hertl acquisition, Stephenson is a luxury they can’t afford.

Marchessault is going to get quite a bit more than a 250k raise. That being said, it’s not guaranteed that he will be a cap casualty. Martinez is gone with the Hanifin signing, and one of Marchessault or Mantha will not be resigned, and more than likely Mantha is out the door. Raymond will very likely be asking for more, and maybe Seider as well.

Canes pass. The 1st is the only interesting piece. Krebs sucks, and Clifton is nothing more than a 3rd pairing dman. Canes wouldn’t want futures, but a player that can help them now if they move Necas.

what are they worth
Why would the Canes be trading Orlov? His contract isn’t in the way of what the Canes can do this offseason. Whilst he is slightly overpaid, having the term be low is the tradeoff. Given that he likely is the replacement for Skjei for next season, I would imagine it would cost a pretty penny for anyone wanting to try and acquire Orlov.

Necas to MTL
If Necas is signing that deal, Canes just keep him. Whilst the 2 1sts would be intriguing pieces, depth D prospects are of little interest. And the only way a futures trade would work is if a 3rd team enters the mix with something going to the Canes for those assets.

Next year
Canes wouldn’t be looking for an LHD in a return for Necas. They have Slavin and Orlov already under contract for next season, and Nikishin when he comes over would put Matheson into the press box from being 3LD. There is likely only 3 players that the Canes would be willing to move Necas to the Habs for, and the Habs aren’t going to move any of them. As has been many times, the Canes and Habs are not good trading partners for Necas.

If NJ wants Swayman
Goalies don’t carry as much value as skaters due to the unpredictability and crazy nature of the position. Swayman might get a bit more value than other goalies like Markstrom or Gibson due to being younger and an expiring RFA, but likely not more than 2 1sts. A 1st and 3rd has been about the benchmark for a desperate team in need of a starter. Great example would be the Kuemper trade to Colorado.

Ari - Car at the draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PenguinMullet68</b></div><div>Draft picks, cap space and a better goalie then who they currently have</div></div>
Vejmelka has only had a better season than Raanta, which of the Canes 4 NHL level goalies this season, that would rank Vejmelka behind Kochetkov, Andersen, and Martin. Please tell me, in what way is Vejmelka better than either of Andersen or Kochetkov?
O’Brien is nothing more than a 4th line goon. Canes already have Lemiuex as their physical 4th liner. Jenik is an AHLer, which would not hurt to bring in assuming that the Canes are getting their AHL affiliation back in the offseason, but he doesn’t have any value at the NHL level. It’s just not worth it.
Besides, if the Canes truly needed cap space, and under the assumption that they don’t have confidence in KK, a buyout saves them a lot more cap space, rather than taking back about 600k less cap in this scenario.

Ari - Car at the draft
How exactly does this help the Canes? A 3rd goalie they don’t need, a 4th liner, an AHL player and a couple of picks doesn’t do anything for the Canes. Despite his problems, KK is still young enough that he can be Staal’s replacement.
