Montreal Canadiens signed Jayden Struble (2 Years / $925,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KSIxSKULLS</b></div><div>Kent Hughes said in his statement that they needed A clear path to the NHL in order for him to sign. Obviously there's a plan here.</div></div>
Except Guhle, there's no sure shot on the future blue line of the Habs. Xhekaj isn't yet a sure-thing at the NHL level and Harris as of right now is a 3rd pairing Dman, Hutson isn't even signed, Norlinder has fallen on the depth chart & while Matheson is a top4 right now, he can be moved down if a kid pushes him down at some point in the future. So with all this uncertainty, I'd consider the left-side of the blue line quite open. It's not like we had 3 proven commodities all signed long-term...

Boston Bruins signed David Pastrnak (8 Years / $11,250,000 AAV)
Roughly Panarin money on a quite similar player. Pasta has shown he can produce with anyone and drive a line by himself from the wing. What I like is that this "only" brings him to 34 years old, so there might be only 1 or 2 overpaid years on this contract, & that's a worst case scenario really.

(ARI/OTT) - Chychrun for 1st, 2nd, 2nd
If that condition on the 2023 pick is "top2 protected", that's a big OTT win.

(ARI/CAR) - Gostisbehere for 3rd
Carolina is having a strong deadline IMO. In this strong seller's market, they're (so far) keeping their head cold and picking up cheap assets. If they use Ghost like MTL used Gustafsson on their final's run (aka sheltered minutes, paired with defensive partners + PP usage), he'll surely be serviceable.

(DET/VAN) - Hronek for 2023 1st and 2nd
I understand the draft is deep & that's two quality picks (Vancouver's second is going to be 36~), but this trade is puzzling on many levels. First, how will VAN find cap space to pay him in a year. Anyways, why is VAN buying if you move your captain and one culture player. This trade is two years too late. From Detroit perspective, I get that the value is fair, but I'm not sure why you'd move a 25 year old top4 defenseman for only fair value.
EDIT: Unless DET uses those assets to bring, let's say, Chychrun, this makes little sense. Funny thing, if they do, is that the pick used on Chychrun's selection was originally from DET and was moved to ARI with a cap dump!

Los Angeles Kings signed Michael Anderson (8 Years / $4,125,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sharkie69</b></div><div>This looks very similar to the Samuelsson contract. Is Mikey a similar type of player?</div></div>
Samuelsson's sample size was much smaller but he was a great fit by Dahlin for a 25-games stretch. Buffalo is betting he's going to be to Dahlin what Methot was to Karlsson.
Also, Samuelsson can be bought out anytime between now and 2025 (included) for 1/3 value, whereas Andersson is 2/3 of the contract's total value in penalty starting in 2025. The risk is different but the sample size larger in the later case.

Only a third contract on an 8 year deal and below the 5M AAV mark. But history has not been kind so far with these (Matheson, Kotkaniemi).

(MTL/CHI) - Hillis for Beaudin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>If a player clears waivers, that means he's not wanted by any of the other 31 teams.
It's not a good sign for that player's future in the NHL.
You can spin it however way you want.
But it's really not that complicated.
</div></div>
If a player clears waivers, that means no team wants to commit to 30 days right that moment to that player, which is entirely different from no team willing or interested to committing to that player at all.
Indeed that is not a pretty sign for a player's future, but the distinction is important. In all cases, Habs get a potential NHLer in their system (even though the likelihood of him being a quality player or having a long career are low) in exchange for a ECHLer & without taking a contract towards the 50 limit. You're the one spinning it the way you want :P

(MTL/CHI) - Hillis for Beaudin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>Placing a player on waivers is an admission by his team that said player no longer has any trade value to that team.
If nobody claims him, that player's trade value is wiped out.
Determining which team wins a trade is really that simple.
Also, I see that the Habs' fanbase is out in full force today, which probably explains why the vote is lopsided.
And why I'm being bombarded with all these comments :popcorn</div></div>
A player can have a better trade value by having passed waivers, since he can now be assigned to the AHL for the remainder of the season and be waivers exempt for 29 days or 9 games & will not count towards their 23-man roster. The fact Beaudoin passed waivers gives flexibility to the Habs, who can now choose to have him develop a full extra year in their system at the AHL level.
If they had claimed him off waivers, they could have lost him when trying to assign him to the AHL later on.
I know it's not like that on your XBox, but that's the way it actually, truly is.

(MTL/CHI) - Hillis for Beaudin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>If Montreal wanted Beaudin, they could have claimed him off waivers 3 weeks ago for free.
Whether Beaudin is a former 1st round pick or whether Hillis is an ECHL player is completely irrelevant.
The Chicago Blackhawks win the trade.</div></div>
By claiming him, Montreal would have had to keep him in the NHL for 30 days + risk losing him for nothing when waived, after those 30 days. On top of this, if CHI claimed him back and no other team did, he could have been sent to the minors by Chicago.
This way, Montreal makes sure he stays in their system, at the AHL level, throughout the entire 22-23 season. Also, getting rid of a contract has value for Montreal.

Buffalo Sabres signed Mattias Samuelsson (7 Years / $4,285,714 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SevenLeg</b></div><div>This type of contract is needed right now if they want to have some good-value deals in their (future) contention window. Might be steep now, but in a few years, they'll be glad they did it early.</div></div>
Unlike Tage's contract, the risk here remains kind of small. He could be bought out in 3 years for ~700k/year cap-hit penalty because of his age. The upside if he becomes a top4 Dman (which I assume they believe) strongly overcomes the potential downside.
