Expanding the pool
CHI is past the point of the rebuild where quantity is more important than quality.
They have bodies in the system and what they need now is to roll the dice on high-end talent, impact players. Even of the boom-or-bust variety.

There won't be any retention on Jones if he's moved. CHI (or any other team) isn't tying up a retention slot for 7 years!

Hronek and total revamp
Feels like an overpay for Hronek, who seems like he benefitted a lot from his pairings this year. How much does he move the needle for TOR?
Personally I'd love CHI to take Tavares, I proposed acquiring him as a short-term complement to Bedard last summer too. Would he waive? No clue. But if he will, "Tavares to CHI for ____" seems to make too much sense not to happen.

I love Demidov
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Rumors are between Levshunov and Demidov, but who really knows. What is certain is that Demidov has just as high, if not higher, of a ceiling as Celebrini and would be a half step behind Celebrini in tiers with the players behind Demidov a full step behind Celebrini. Hawks have a big hole at RW with zero natural RW's in the pipeline. Demidov also is equal to Michkov of Kucherov at the same age, or even better. I don't see how the Hawks can pass him, but if they do, I can't see how they can pass on Levshunov.</div></div>
Agreed, the only complicating factor could be uncertainty about him coming over. If the front office is convinced he comes to North America after his 1 remaining year on the KHL deal is up, then this pick is a slam dunk.

Do we know that the team is sold on him? Honest question, haven't seen anything definitive yet.
I agree that trading down for quantity isn't likely to be the move for CHI now. The prospect pipeline has a lot of bodies in it, they won't all pan out but at this point it makes more sense to aim for elite talent rather than more bodies.

Pens Offseason - Marner
CHI would probably take 1 year of Smith. Not sure they'd pay for the privilege but a 6th round pick is pretty close to "nothing" so, why not.

A 2C that Rod Will Trust
Stephenson makes sense for CAR but is one of those guys who is walking into such an advantageous position in free agency that he's likely to get way, way overpaid.
I'm not saying he's "worth it" but if he signs for less than $6-7m AAV I'll be amazed.

Marnie Gotta Go
The best way for TOR to clear cap space through CHI is to do a simple deal involving Tavares (if he can be convinced to waive!), some incentive, and "future considerations."
Honestly, I think CHI would move Seth Jones' contract given the chance but it doesn't make sense in a deal involving Marner. Marner's value is to a contender in the next 2-3 years, not a rebuilding team with lots of cap.

When an aging winger with declining production is owed $27m over the next three years, you understand that "He'd be the best winger on your team" is not relevant right

Maybe discount any rumors suggesting that any team is going to give BUF something for the honor of paying Skinner $9m/year for three more seasons.

Dubois-Torts reunion
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tryger</b></div><div>NMC Jully 1st, Kings are stuck with him the entire run and are not looking into a buyout. If Byfield takes his role as the 3C and moves PLD to the wing the contract is likely salvageable. Watched him every game, he's frustrating, but folks act like he can't play top-6 minutes and has zero compete. He can, but LAs defensive system is greek to him and we did him no favor with linemates. New coach or new system, he'll return to form, but still look lazy and make boneheaded plays.
The thing that's frustrating is he's going to be a 60 point player next season and people will say Blake is a genius for not trading him.</div></div>
I guess as a Kings fan you have to hope it works out but idk how many more red flags you need to see before you wonder if maybe PLD is just a problem and he's not going to suddenly figure things out. You're talking about moving him to a wing and hoping he can score 60 points, for a guy you owe $8.5m for 7 more years. Yikes.

Even if LAK takes a bad contract back in return, I don't think a team in the league is going to touch Dubois and that contract. Very expensive buyout in LAK's future, or they pay a ton to get some bottom-feeder team to eat his contract.
It was a terrible deal the day they made it and it looks even worse now.

Marner Machinations
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>Honestly, that is fair. I think if we can move jones for positive value and he is willing to do it, it should be a consideration. But, Marner would have to sign off on the entire plan ahead of any sort of trade. He would have to be willing to be a rental and waive at the deadline. Otherwise, we would be giving Jones away for nothing. Which should not be an option, and would be completely unnecessary.</div></div>
Yeah the NMC for Marner is big. Zero guarantee he'd waive for CHI and then they'd have to trust him to waive again. It's risky.

Marner Machinations
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>That may be. I wouldn't mind if Jones wanted out and CHI obliged, but not for nothing in return. Marner should not be a target, and at best it should be a 1-for-1 with Marner understanding that he must be willing to waive his NMC again at the deadline and be a rental. Even with an extension in place or on the table, I don't want to trade one almost 30 year old with a massive contract for another.</div></div>
In my mind it's a win to swap one guy with a massive contract for another guy with a massive contract with 7 years left on it.
CHI is probably not a smart long-term fit for Marner but if taking him allows CHI to 1) dump Seth Jones and 2) get some kind of 2024-25 deadline haul for Marner, I say that's two wins.
Yes I'm very negative on Seth J. but he's already overpaid for "meh" performance and in 3-4 years it's gonna be one of the worst contracts in hockey.

Most CHI fans will say no but honestly I'm in favor of any deal that gets Seth Jones off the books. There's plenty of cap space right now but over time, that contract is going to be more and more onerous, and someday CHI will have to pay dearly to unload it.
