Montreal Canadiens signed Brendan Gallagher (6 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
Serious question, do Habs fans always go trash on every new Leafs signing? Just wondering.

So Gallagher goes from being one of the most underpaid wingers in the league to ... a very reasonable salary and term. That's a good deal for Montreal. Gallagher plays a style that has him taking abuse, so there is always a bit of risk, but if you are going to take that risk, Gallagher is the type of player you take it on. He is one of the best even strength wingers in the NHL, full stop. He loses some value for not being a PP driver, but there are a lot of wingers in the league who aren't really any better, but get the advantage of playing on a stacked PP.
If Gallagher stays healthy as the younger players develop, it would not shock me if he has his best statistical seasons ahead of him. Not because he will get better, but if he gets complimented with some higher skilled players, he can likely pick up some additional points (especially on the PP), that he isn't getting right now. He's like Zach Hyman, except he's also capable of creating a lot of chances for himself out of nothing.

I don't think MB was involved in any troll job here. I think this was 100% Gally's agent leaking that talks between the two broken off in order to insert added pressure on MB's camp to budge on a long term deal. I think it worked. As for the contract, this is exactly what I expected. Actually I expected MAX term but..... you know....Covid.
I like it.

That's a lot for Gallagher's production, but he is the heart and soul of the team. Losing a guy like that would have a negative effect on the locker room so it's somewhat justified

How would you grade Bergevins offseason
I'd give Bergevin an A-, he addressed all of the needs without giving up prospects / young players, I love the Toffoli singing, and improving our goaltending and defense, and I like getting Josh Anderson, I'm just not a fan of the contract, or what we gave up, plus Guhle at 16 wasn't the right pick to me. But Bergy did address all of the needs, added draft picks for next year, and did it all without giving up too much. Now I'd just like to see Gallagher and maybe Danault get extensions, and move the Byron contract if it's possible, probably move Kulak / Weal as well.

I think those are the only possible things you COULD question. I think those contracts are fine, but I can see how they are worrying. Edmundson and Anderson are great addition IMO. I can understand however if you aren’t a fan of their advanced/regular stats though.

Quoting: justaBoss

Ehh...out of those moves only ones I would've done were bringing Toffoli and Romanov in. Anderson signing and trade was a bust for what we've seen thus far, paying for assets like Edmundson or Allen wasn't really necessary since there were other options available in the free agency, and well the rest of the players leaving the team we're vets with their contracts expiring, so nothing much done by Bergevin there...

-Edmundson and Anderson are busts? Can we wait until they play a game lol?
-Out of all the goalies available, who signed a one-year deal, which is what we needed?. It's not like we gave up the moon for Allen either.
-The fact that he brought in every single pieces that we were missing while only giving up one valuable pieces that was a surplus proves a lot about Bergevin.

He's been doing good things since he's GM. Sergachev for Drouin is the only thing I'd reverse. Most of the time it seems like bad moves (Galchenyuk for Domi, Chiarot 3x3.5) but he always proves wrong. Meanwhile, this summer :
In during the offseason.
➡️ Josh Anderson
➡️ Tyler Toffoli
➡️ Joel Edmundson
➡️ Alexander Romanov
➡️ Jake Allen
Out during the offseason
➡️ Max Domi
➡️ Dale Weise
➡️ Christian Folin
➡️ Keith Kinkaid

Montreal Canadiens signed Josh Anderson (7 Years / $5,500,000 AAV)
This is a massive gamble. This is big money and likely not a good deal if it's a UFA. Andersen is a middle 6 winger, and a solid one, but he's offensively limited, solid defensively and hits. He's a bigger nastier Paul Byron.
This is one of those deals that people will likely argue about for the first few years, as Andersen will likely be good, but probably overpaid. Where this deal gets ugly is that players like Anderson, especially ones with injury history, tend to fall of a cliff in their 30's, and he's signed until after his 34th birthday. Also, this team really doesn't feel like it should be all in like this for a 3-4 year window, but they now have a lot of money tied up to guys who could be in massive decline in a few years. I know they already had Price and Weber, but deciding to keep Petry, and now signing Anderson can mean this team has about $30M committed to a foursome of players who may have trouble contributing to a winning team. It feels like Bergevin figures this team is either a contender, or it's not his problem since he won't be there when it all goes bad.

Umm... well at least we didn’t walk him to UFA.
So this is either a great deal locking down a good player for a long time, or it’s the 2nd worst deal that Marc Bergevin has ever signed.

Pretty fair for both sides. Lots to like about Josh Anderson before his shoulder was pulled pork this season. If he returns back to his level of play two years ago, this is a homerun for Montreal. High risk, high reward. Sometimes you gotta roll the dice

Marc's betting his job as a GM on this precise contract, Alzner was a rookie move that has been forgotten. If Anderson comes back to his old form and I don't mean a 30 goal scorer, if he comes back to being a 20+ goals and 200 plus hits per year he'll be worth every penny of this mammoth of a contract and Bergevin will sign for another 5 year term in Montreal. If he doesn't pan out and keeps getting injured Marc will be canned.
Sincerely think Josh can come back to his old self when fully healthy, we'll need to readress this trade in a couple of years.
Hoping for the best and for once we can'T say the Habs offseason's been boring!

What’s happening right now is the first thing they see when they look at this trade is the lopsided poll, where they form a bad opinion. This is not a bad trade
This is also not a great trade. Domi’s 70 points may not have worn off for some teams, so I feel we could have gotten more for him. However, Anderson is exactly what we need at the moment, and i’ll be willing to overpay for that

The demand was high for Andersson. MB really wanted him I guess, and overpaid with the 3rd round pick. It's not as bad as people make it look, Andersson is exactly the type of winger the habs needed. Big and reliable defensively, will be useful for the development of Suzuki and Caufield! And Domi wanted to play C, but aint no spot avaible there for him currently.
Columbus wins this trade atm, since they get the most talented player. But seems like a good trade overall.

(MTL/CBJ) - Domi + 2020 3rd round pick for Anderson
I'm unsure how to feel about Anderson after this season.
Disclaimer: I've wanted Domi out for the past 6 months. I think people are overacting and overestimating Domi severely. He's not versatile. I don't believe he's got any use on the PP, because he can't shoot. He's fast and good on the rush 5-on-5, and he's good at cross-ice passes, but that's about it. He's a defensive liability (anyone remember when DET was matching lines against him and then swept MTL for the first time in NHL History?) and he was without a doubt the number 4C on the Habs.
This moves makes the team more balanced on paper at least. The Habs now have 3 RW, so one more to go...
Giving away a 3rd kinda sucks, but I'm guessing the writing was on the wall that MTL wanted Domi out.
Hopefully, the Anderson contract will look okay?

Taking a closer look at this, both players seem to hover around 40 points per season (aside from Domi's fluke 70 point season). Considering this, plus the fact that Anderson will be significantly cheaper cap wise, this deal isn't nearly as bad as lots of people are saying.
Still a win for Columbus, but certainly not a fleece.

Montreal Canadiens signed Jeff Petry (4 Years / $6,250,000 AAV)
Alright I feel like CF is turning into a Fantasy Football league. Either you're a rookie or a hall of famer, anything in between shouldn't sign a contract longer than 2 years according to the average Joe here so guys help me out there ( @Kotkaniemi15 , @jpsnow13 , @F50marco , @HabsForEver ).
Cap for the next four years: The only big raises coming up are Suzuki and most likely KK's in line for a bridge deal because of his meh sophomore year. Romanov hasn't played a game yet so I don't understand why people think he'll be payed 6 millions when his ELC's up. Rookie with ELCs should start making the team and by doing so they'll push higher salaries out of the line up.
Let's agree that the followings should hit the ice throughout the next four years: Ylonen, Caufield, Norlinder, Struble, Primeau and Harris.
They shall -hypothetically- replace the followings: Armia, Lehkonen, Chiarot (Wouldn't surprise me that he's taken by Seattle at this point), Kulak, Allen and Mete.
That would be savings of around 10 million dollars depending on ELC prices and on how much Mete signs for, not even considering the cap raise and stuff like Alzner being off the books. Am I missing the issue there?
Regression: Has Petry shown any signs of regression? End of the topic.
Age/Term: Please refer to the previous subject. As long as regression isn't shown, those are completely irrelevant. People are mainly spittballin their prophecy more than anything else with solid element of discussion.
That's pretty much the analysis. Bergevin seems to be a step ahead of everything this offseason, GMs were reportedly surprised about the Allen trade and some thought there might be draft day trade talks for him. I'm feeling this year Marc wants to set the market instead of following it and coming out short, agents of other UFA defenders will obviously take looks at those two contracts (Petry and Ed) for their clients (Krug, Barrie, Vatanen, Brodie and Shattenkirk). It might f*ck some team plans up and we may look at our two deals two months from now and see them differently.
To be continued.
