Cap trouble
As an outside observer (non Toronto fan), I totally agree with the OP. I don't see how you field a playoff caliber defense next year without trading away one of the big $ forwards (which really probably should have happened already). I said before this season started that this was a make or break year for Toronto, because it only gets harder next year. I don't envy your position.

2020 Cup Champs
If some team offer sheets MM for 5 years 10.5M, I don't see why he wouldn't take it over your offer.
I don't see him signing with Toronto for less that $10.5M per year, regardless of the length of the contract.

Next year

You could look at it that way, or you could also realize that we were two losses from not making the playoffs at all...and we're counting on the same guys again next year. Almost without exception, the rest of the conference looks to be getting better as well.
You would expect all of the young players to make strides, and for the captain to take a small step backwards. Perhaps bringing up Necas or another Charlotte kid will improve the depth.
I wouldn't spend the money on Bob. I'd offer Mrazek 3-4 years at +/-$4m and bring up Neddy. I could see moving some of our riches at defense for another scorer. Nylander is the obvious one, but I'm a little worried about his dedication to team after last season.

I don't think it's realistic to think Thornton will be worth that at 47 years of age....but everything else seems realistic.

A top 3 team since Jan 1...beat the defending Stanley Cup Champs...and hold a 3-0 lead in the second round. Is it possible that Carolina is better than you think they are?

Not with those contracts. TOR should have been more aggressive with this trade early in the year. At this point, I don't see CAR moving Pesce or Slavin. They are both proving to be a top pairing and both are locked up long term on good contracts.
TOR is not going to get full value for Nylander in a trade. They are probably better off trying to fix their salary cap issues elsewhere.

Crunch Time
I can wee why these trades might be good for Toronto. I'm not sure why CAR would do them.
Pesce is arguably their best contract, so it's incredibly valuable.
Svech is a future superstar, with 2 full years left on his rookie deal.
Foegele is possible trade material only because he'll be in the last year of his rookie deal, and Carolina will be up against the cap in the not too distant future when they have to pay Svech.

Turbo already got his deal, and Aho is going to get paid...as will Mrazek. Beyond that, he'll be offloading salary where he can. Dundon isn't spending to the cap.
Dundon doesn't "want to spend it"...I can assure you.

What's a better expectation for Faulk? We won't be trading him for similar salary, as Dundon is going to be looking to offload salary, not add to it. Maybe a prospect and picks? He'll be on the last year of his deal.

I think we'll give Mrazek 3 years $4M or something...and bring up Neddy.
