Cool, keep him. Just liked the thought of bringing in Strome to play with his brother really. I don't even like Zegras but thought the value was fair.

Why would the Caps pass? They are desperate to get back to the Playoffs and their AHL club just won the Calder Cup while not even playing Miroshnichenko, Suzdalev or Trineyev. Not sure the 8th overall helps them during the Ovechkin Era.

It's kind of surprising that he wanted to re-sign and not test free agency. It's even more surprising that he didn't secure any type of trade protection.

The asking price is two 1st Rounders, so I offer 1 un-protected 1st and a 2nd plus our Top Prospect and a huge winger under contract who would probably play 1st line in Arizona. I think it's a fair trade, more than fair. They would still have 9 picks in rounds 1-3 over the next 3 drafts. They won't be bad enough to even have a chance at Bedard.

If the Caps were interested in replacing Hagelin who hasn't played at all this year they could have just taken Jonsson-Fjallby back off of waivers. No way they would trade for Drouin and put a 5.5 million cap hit on the 4th line when they're already stuck with Mantha.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NoVaSpartan</b></div><div>Sheary conversations supposedly already failed in the offseason so I think Milano was the insurance move. I don't really see a world right now where he doesn't price himself out of DC.
Also I think those Gus and TvR contracts are low, <strong>especially for Gus</strong>.</div></div>
It's a 50% raise over his current salary, 29 points in 52 games looks good but all 7 of his goals came in a span of 11 games. Even with increased ice time and PP opportunity since Carlson went down he hasn't produced as well. He and TVR are 3rd pairing defenseman and shouldn't make more than 1.2 million.

I wonder if there were negotiations with Sheary that didn't work out before they re-signed Milano. I'd value a 2X Cup Champion with 72 games of playoff experience over a guy with 4 games and 0 career playoff points even if there is a 4 year age difference :s

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>The trouble in a cap strapped league, trading a middling player with a semi high cap is virtually impossible without similar cap being returned. The other team would much better off signing a UFA(s) for just as good value as you just did with your UFA signings.
Now a lousy team with cap might take Mantha off your hands, but don't expect anything in return, might even to add a sweetener as so many teams want to dump cap to cap available teams.</div></div>
I almost included Lindgren in a hypothetical Mantha trade because he looks to be starter material and has a very team friendly contract.

Doesn't have to be Ottawa. Just suggesting a lineup without him on the team because he isn't a good fit. I forgot Ottawa still pays almost 3.5 million in buyouts.

Mantha should absolutely be moved somehow. His 5.7 million will be needed to re-sign defenseman. Carlson is the only NHL D under contract beyond this year.

I think you should re-read my post. I posted the lines, which shows a 22 player roster, and is in fact a full roster (2 healthy scratches)...
Posting it again incase you missed it:
Ovi-Kuzy-Wilson
Strome-Backy-Mantha
Milano-McM-Oshie
Snively-Dowd-Protas
Fehervary-Carlson
Orlov-Jensen
Alexeyev-TVR
Keumper
Lindgren
Scratches: LoJo (LD) / Malenstyn (F)</div></div>
That would leave $55,833 in Cap space but I think you are undervaluing what Orlov, Jensen and TVR will sign for.

Where are you getting that figure from>? They'll have more like 21 million +/- depending on Cap increase. Your theoretical contracts add up to 20.7 million and doesn't even fill out the roster.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>qc14</b></div><div>not in big trouble at all lol</div></div>
Next season they are in MASSIVE trouble. Ovechkin, Backstrom, Oshie, Carlson, Kuemper and Orlov have trade protection and aren't going anywhere. If they don't re-sign Orlov during the season he'll get priced out by the UFA market. They still have to sign Strome, Fehervary and Alexeyev. Sheary, Milano, Eller, Johansson, Hathaway, Aube-Kubel, Jensen, Gustafsson, Van Riemsdyk and Irwin are all UFA in addition to Orlov. All of the free agents are worth more than they are currently under contract for. Big changes are coming before next season.

They almost have to move Mantha with the following players on expiring deals;
F- Strome (RFA), Eller, Sheary, Milano, Hathaway, Johansson, Aube-Kubel, Brown, Hagelin
D- Fehervary (RFA), Alexeyev (RFA), Orlov, Jensen, Gustafsson, Van Riemsdyk, Irwin

Mantha has scored at a 21 goal pace since joining the team and has 0 goals in 11 playoff games. How is he amazing?

These moves would certainly lower the average age of the team and afford the luxury of giving regular off days to the older players depending on match-ups. Protas, Leason, and Alexeyev could rotate in and out as needed. Protas and Leason are big bodied young forwards who can play against bigger more physical teams as needed when tweeners like Sheary and Snively would likely get pushed around.
