HELLEBUYCK

No way the Jets say yes to this. Goalies like this RARELY become available via trade, especially while still only 28.</div></div>
So what's a more realistic offer? I kinda pieced this together to see if the Cap could work.

Forsberg
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WhyWait</b></div><div>Forsberg for Mantha, Sprong, Lapierre, 2nd
Mantha is the worst trade the Caps have made since Forsberg, so it would be ironic to trade him for Forsberg. Mantha wasn't the same after the injury two years ago, and now he has a different big injury. Value is sketchy. However, I think that you could take out Lapierre if the Preds like Mantha. Sprong is no value, the second is a 50+ so meh. It all depends if they want a roster guy or picks.</div></div>
I wasn't a big fan of the Mantha trade but mostly because I really like Vrana. He has a few years left on a pretty decent contract. Sprong is RFA and could be flipped for a pick to a re-building team a la Seattle or Arizona. I'd hate to trade Lapierre but it would be worth it for Forsberg and I would trade this years 1st as well to not include him in the deal.

They wouldn't have a chance at signing Forsberg as UFA with Manthas Cap Hit on the payroll.

Dude barely cracks the Top 80 defenseman in points per game the last 4 seasons and has one of the worst contracts in the league. No way they would sign him as opposed to playing someone like Alexeyev on an entry level contract.

Contracts That Need to Be Dumped Next Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NoVaSpartan</b></div><div>Kempny this year, possibly Hagelin this offseason/next season.</div></div>
Kempny is on the last year of his deal anyways. They can't afford to re-sign Schultz so it would probably make more sense to move Schultz for a pick and go with Carlson, Jensen, TVR on the right and Fehervary, Orlov, Cholowski/Kempny on the left or flip the pick to the Islanders and bring Chara back. Hagelin at 50% retention wouldn't be a bad contract ($1.38 Million) for a team to acquire for 1 year. He still has wheels and can kill penalties effectively. Eller could/should be moved so they can utilize the value of the entry level contracts next year.

Who is better Ovi in his first six years or McDavid in his first six years
I say Ovechkin for a couple of reasons. He had to adjust to the smaller ice and was still dominant from the start. He clearly has an edge in goal scoring. McDavid plays center which i think raises expectations and opportunity for higher point totals. Add to that Ovechkins physicality and you have you're winner.

When Backstrom and Oshie are back
Fehervary with 22 games of experience in his NHL career and a cap hit under 800K , has more points in the last 2 games than Schultz has in 16 games played with 544 games of experience and a cap hit of 4 million. Forgive me for thinking Schultz should be producing more than he is. I don't think Schultz will be back next year anyways with RHD's Carlson, Jensen and Van Riemsdyk already signed.

He is #6 in TOI and #6 in points among defenseman. That makes him the #6 defenseman. Also he doesn't kill penalties and has 1 powerplay point in 20+ minutes of ice time. #6 all day.

Yes, I watch the games. He's being paid 4 million to be the #6 defenseman. He has 1 goal and 1 assist. I've seen nothing amazing.

2 points in 12 games is far from amazing. Especially with powerplay time and 64% offensive zone starts.

I want Sprong to play first line minutes
Ovechkin and Kuznetsov are not ideal to play with Sprong, He lacks the physical ability to play on the 1st line. Wilson and Oshie are both better options for the Top 6 RW spots with Sprong rotating into the Top 6 for injuries and getting in on the powerplay occasionally.

If Lappiere keeps it up
I'd rather take a low return on Kuznetsov to a western conference team. Lapierre and McMichael both have top-6 ability/upside on entry level contracts which is extremely valuable for a team that spends to the cap. Eller is a top-10 3rd line center and he and Dowd excelled as the centers on last years 5th ranked PK units.

Kuzy to Rangers
Won't happen because:
A. Kuznetsov isn't getting moved while Backstrom is on LTIR.
B. Kravtsov, who couldn't make the lineup in New York, would not play in the Capitals Top 6.
C. Tom Wilson will not be healthy scratched (he isn't Ryan Reaves).
D. Barron adds absolutely nothing to the lineup, the Capitals 4th line of Hagelin - Dowd - Hathaway is among the leagues best.
E. All of the above.

So when Backstrom returns from LTIR the Capitals are 2.5 million over the salary cap. This doesn't work.

Reload rather than rebuild
This makes zero sense for Washington as they would be way over the Cap after the $6.5 million extension for Hertl. So unless they trade for Smith and McNabb and then let them walk in free agency the money just wouldn't work. Then you want to trade Hagelin who is a key penalty killer and fixture on the 4th line to immediately healthy scratch the player you traded him for? On top of all of that you no longer have McMichael who is cheap and under team control and you want Sprong to play on the 4th line? No Way. Just Brutal. And you haven't even considered what Samsonov would make because it won't be $2 million.

A. Not enough to get Greenway and we have enough players like him already (Wilson, Mantha, Hathaway)
B. Why would it make sense to trade Hagelin, who was a top penalty killing forward last year (they already lost Chara and Dillon on the backend) and also 1/3 of the most consistent line on the team and possibly the best 4th line in the NHL

Nardella is 5'9" so I highly doubt he'll be an everyday NHL defenseman. Getting Kempny back is like getting a toy for Christmas without batteries so you don't know if it will even work. Alexeyev probably needs another half season in Hershey. No point in rotating a bunch of rookies in and out of the lineup when they could be getting regular ice time with the Bears.

We have Orlov, a half broken Kempny and 2 rookies on the left side of the defense. Not exactly a position of strength.
