Dillon for peices that help the retool instead of picks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>papishark</b></div><div>That’s kind of a losers attitude. The sharks still have a good core and the forwards aren’t all that old.</div></div>
it's a loser's attitude because the sharks are losers right now. karlsson, burns, vlasic, kane, and couture are having the worst seasons of their careers and they aren't getting any younger. the future is locking in hertl, meier, labanc, and dillon, then surrounding them with cost-controlled assets and giving them competent goaltending. this cannot happen without burning it down and rebuilding.

Retooling just delays the inevitable and will never be enough to get back to even the second round. Sharks need to commit to two seasons of pain, deal veterans with surplus value, and reload in the draft.

Fix Sharks Take 2
there's absolutely no chance labanc takes another "prove it" deal after agreeing to a $1m sweetheart in 2019. he's arbitration eligible and he's going to come for that timo meier money.
in other thoughts--how is this roster any more likely to compete than the roster iced today? it has all the same problems that the sharks have today. weak goaltending, three declining goaltenders eating up $30m of cap space, mediocre depth, no true top-minutes play-driving forwards. These changes are all horizontal.

preds (51 points) are 6 points back of the wildcard race with 5 games in hand on the knights, 4 on the yotes, 3 on the flames, 2 on the oilers (all 57 points). with the pacific being so mediocre and the preds having a bunch of games to make up the space i don't think the doomsaying is entirely fair yet. in a couple weeks it'll be more certain if they're selling or keeping pat

Tarasenko
From a marketing perspective this can't happen. Even if the value is good, Tarasenko is the #8 top selling jersey in the NHL. Provides way too much fiscal value to the franchise to move for futures.

If your reading comprehension was better you'd notice that your comment doesn't remotely address my concerns about the players' trade protection, which is 100% priority above any evaluation of the actual trade value. Maybe you should quote the people you actually want replying. Maybe you shouldn't pick a fight you don't want.

Oh wait, i get it, this is like a reverse mortgage. You are rebuilding, but instead of trading for young blue chip prospects and high draft picks for your veterans, you are trading only decent players and a ton of picks for a 29 year old smaller size 3rd line C who will be paid until his mid-30's, and a 30 year old D man who is probably already starting to show is age and will also be paid until he is 36.
Very nice.</div></div>
you're acting like the bolts and habs have literally any agency in this trade. mcdonaugh and johnson say no and the whole deal is off. that's how NTCs work you ****ing donut.

why would mcdonagh or johnson waive their full NTCs to go from a tampa team that will easily make the playoffs to a montreal team that is very clearly mortgaging the future? i can't imagine either of them going literally anywhere for any price.

Taking on Backes contract
stl deal is an absolute no-go. no organizational need for right-handed defensemen even if pietrangelo walks, blais is a high-level prospect, trouba contract is an albatross. it's too expensive for something we don't need or want.

and what if they became sellers
i think you're making a pretty significant miscalculation on the st louis trade. alexandrov's ceiling is a middle-six forward, and he likely projects as a career third-liner. kasperi kapanen is exactly what you hope nikita alexandrov becomes, and your best hope for a late second is another alexandrov-type prospect.

Not the STL NYR SJ deals you were thinking of
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Blues aren't trading Allen until summer, maybe call back then... but Hutch & Timashov hold no interest for us.</div></div>
i strongly disagree. this trade is a fantastic deal for st louis that improves the team short-term and makes signing pietrangelo significantly easier in the post-season, as STL nets about 1.5m in cap space from this deal. hutchinson and timashov might not be high value but timashov is strongly cost-controlled and hutchinson has been serviceable when he has access to a high-fundamentals defensive core. meanwhile kapanen is by a wide margin the best player in this trade and adds 20 goals to the team's middle six on a very nice contract. this is an absolute slam dunk from STL's perspective.

Toffoli
this trade only makes sense if stl plans to re-sign toffoli. stl will likely only be in the market for a true rental with skaters kyrou, thomas, blais fighting for top-6 time next season.
with pietrangelo contract up next year stl needs to hang on to cost-controlled assets and will prefer moving picks and project skaters for rentals.

i think stl would prefer to keep older prospects in the pipeline, especially goal-scoring prospects to cover the team's finishing weakness.

not only does georgiev have a great place in NYR's lineup if they choose to move the aging lundqvist, but you're fundamentally misunderstanding the fact that players still have value even if they are not valued in their current system. NYR having an excess in net doesn't mean their goaltenders are inherently less valuable. georgiev is still a 23 year old cost-controlled fringe starter with significant upside that is not arbitration eligible. there are teams in the league that will value him as their possible goalie of the future and will be willing to part with assets that reflect that. kapanen for georgiev is already far from the best package available for NYR, and that's even before including the pick downgrade.
