Marner Must Go
Let's play a game called "How to spend 10 million dollars":
Option 1:
- Terrible, miscast number 1 defenseman who posts worse defensive results than every other Leafs defenseman (aside from Rielly)
- Middle 6 winger who eclipses the 20 goal mark at his best, but typically hovers around 15 goals
Cost of Option 1: $10 700 000
Option 2:
- Top line winger who consistently scores at a 100 point pace and nets around 30 goals
- One of the best wingers in the entire league
- Extremely elite playmaker (Makes Matthews and Tavares better)
- Has the best defensive results of any forward on the team
Cost of Option 2: $10 903 000
The choice is clear. Bagheads will baghead I guess

That and it’s a total pipe dream to think sharks would retain 4.5 mil on the potential Norris winner and on top of that take a huge cap dump in Campbell.

If I had to guess, he wants long term around 6m. I can only see him taking less AAV with the Devils, and I can't see him signing short term anywhere.

Nah Im still confident in Hollaway
Of course rn Guhle is playing a little better but I like hollaway as a fit next to drai when we eventually have to lose one of yams or puju due to cap reasons
Give it till the end of the 23-24 season until we make any kind of takes on either of these prospects

Looking at them
I think Barrie can be moved without compensation.
They likely would sign cheaper bottom 6 guy then Vatrano which would leave room for Holloway to make the team.
Would rather re-sign Kulak then Gudbranson
Signing Husso and not moving Smith means you are running 3 goalies or losing Skinner to waivers

Predicting starting lineup
This is probably the setup for most of the series against the Kings. The Oilers function so much better as an 11F/7D squad as it really lessens the load on their average-at-best blueline corps.
Honestly, even if Nurse is okay-ish to go for Game 1, I wouldn't rush him in to the fold. I Probably wouldn't ice him until they've lost one or two: he'll be leaned on heavily in any subsequent series so getting him as much rest as possible now is crucial. Oilers in 5 so when that happens, mileage may vary,

Not so sure about that, Savard is cheaper, a much better defender and with Bouchard that have taken the lead offensively Edmonton could benefits to have a solid shutdown defenseman. Barrie have elite offensive upside but defensively he doesn’t show up very often. In a very tight cap era 1.1 millions can be huge. But that being said, it doesn’t fix your goaltending problem. That the biggest issue Holland will have this offseason.

yeah no chance for the Oilers one chief. I know Texier’s good but aside from cap it rather seems like a lateral move going from Koski to Korpi. Also rather just hold onto Puljujarvi as well.

Quoting: Timmah007

How is Bouchard better on pp? He had one good game quarterbacking the pp. Think a lot of opinions on Bouchard this season are more in line with his potential rather than his results. It’s still his first season seeing consistent ice time there is absolutely no need to rush the process with him. I’d like to see him continue to see more pk time than power play because shouldn’t ignore developing his defensive awareness. It will prove beneficial over his entire career. Remove Barrie more of a spotlight gets put on Bouchard more will start noticing the inexperienced mistakes he’s been making the harder media and fans will start being on him in my opinion Barrie has been shielding him from seeing shultz like treatment.

I'm on board with moving Barrie - but he won't be a cap dump. There will be teams that'll want him. I think you need to move him for a different type of RHD - more of a shutdown, bigger body RHD. I think the other reason why people would rather trade him because he'll get a better return than Keith. Let's be honest, if Keith wasn't on this team, then Barrie can stay and play with Niemalienen on the bottom pair. Then find a shutdown LHD - which is easier to do.
Option 1: Keep Barrie, trade Keith because he's a better player. The only thing is it'll be hard to trade Keith. Keith is good as a third pair dman - but he's not worth 5.5M on the cap.
Option 2: Keep Keith, trade Barrie. Barrie is the better player without trade protection so he is the easier one to trade.
Nurse - Ceci - both can play either side but both don't excel at either side if that makes sense.
Keith (more of a puck mover) - ???? (shutdown type)
Niemalienen (shutdown type) - Bouchard (puck mover)

This concept shouldn’t be considered outside the box thinking more common sense approach why not beef up the left add some responsibility to that side and keep the guy who’s been highly productive his entire career. Hate seeing the guy who led all d in points just last year be given away for pennies on the dollar. Makes no sense to me.

Logical but not practical. They don't have the cap space to get someone truly capable of carrying Barrie, nor the flexibility to deploy him favorably in addition to Bouchard.
The Oilers aren't strong enough as a whole to incorporate a PP specialist in a defense slot either.
While they could improve and manage better than they have been, Barrie will still be a less effective contributor in the areas where Edmonton really needs it right now.
It makes more sense to move him than to keep him at this point. How they fill that hole afterwards is a legitimate concern however.

Oilers reject this offer, there is no chance they're giving up an almost NHL ready D Man with higher upside than the goalie they'd be getting, while giving up a 3rd as well.. Like Vanacek but he's not a significant upgrade from Skinner/Konovalev or Smith...

Assuming Askarov lives up to the hype whenever he arrives in NSH sure, one of Ingram or Saros gets moved. That decision is a few years away though.

Of all our defensive toils, Ceci isn't the biggest problem, if you could loose Barrie that would be preferred.
As said previously we can't afford to re-sign Klinger at ~$8m plus Nurse will jump to $9.25m next year. I think the actual defensive upgrade we need is in 2nd LD slot.
I'd be game for the Gieorgiev deal.
